COMBINATION CAP AND EYE SHIELD.
Application filed February 18, 1928. Serial No. 255,289.
, for the goggles so that the weight of the goggle will rest. upon the cheek bone of the wearer and not upon the nose. t is a iurther object to provide a cap to which the goggles are adjustably secured which may be worn in summer with as much comfort as in the winter.
With the foregoing objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter more specifically stated and illustrated in the accompanying drawing where are shown improvements but it is to be un derstood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and wherein like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in which- 7 Figure 1 is a side elevation with parts broken away to show the construction of the Fig. 2 is a view looking up under visor;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line let of Fig. 1.
More specifically, my cap and eye shield consists of crown ribsl forming the skeleton of the cap having removable covering 2 which is adapted to be secured to the encircling band of the cap by fasteners Secured to the encircling bainl is a peak or visor 4 of suitable still material such as cardboard, leather, or any other deui able material usual in cap construction. Constructed in the peak or visor are circular recesses 5 in which the goggles repose when not in use. The shield is shown in the form oi an ordinary goggle and consists of the conventional malleable frame 7 which is bent at each side to form rest-s 12 and thereby take the weight of the goggle ofi the nose of the wearer and at the same time prevent foreign substances from entering the eye from the side. The i'rame 7 is constructed in the usual manner with glasses 6 therein but in this instance is provided with pivotineinbers 9, said pivot members being hingedly secured to the visorv of the cap by cars 8. On the end of the pivot members 9 are formed balls 10 adapted to ride against clip 11. Clip 11 is constructed of suitable resilient material so that the gog gles when swung into inactive position will 3e securely held beneath the visor and within the recesses .5 constructed therein. The goggles normally lie in the circular recesses 5 and are thus protected from being broken. If the wearer desires to protect his eyes he merely has to pull lightly on the edge of the frame 7 and the goggles are then lowered into active position, thus giving him the desired eye protection without handling the glass of the goggles, a very important feature since the hands of usually soiled and greasy.- V Therests 12 of the goggle frame are so constructed that the goggles rest upon the check of the wearer, thus enabling the shield to be worn for hours without tiring the user.
lVhat I claim is: In a device of the class described, the combination with a cap provided with a vizor, protecting goggles provided with a frame pivotally connected with said vizor and shaped to fit over the nose and to rest on the cheek, said goggles depending from said vizor in an operative position and being pivotally movable upward toward the front thereof to an inoperative position beneath said vizor, means for pivotally connecting said goggles with said vizor, said means comprising ears projecting downwardly from opposite sides of said vizor, rods extending outwardly from opposite ends of said frame, each of said rods having a pivot portion journaled in one of said and a locking POlt-lOll ex tending subsstantially at right angles to said pivot portion, a clip having an inner por' tion secured to said v e-or adjacent each of said ears and an outer portion overhanging said locking portion of said rod, said outer portion of said clip being of resilient material and curved in the plane of movement of said locking portion for frictional engagement with the outer end of said locking portion to retain said goggles in inoperative position when swung upward beneath said vizor. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
OTTO GROSS.
