IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE TABLE-LEGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,613, dated November 9, 1875; application iled August 27, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J oEN H. BALSLEY, of Dayton, in the county ot' Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Table- Legs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingsand to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.

The object of my invention is to produce a simple, irm, and durable metallic corner-piece 1 for table, desk, or stand frames, to which the leg can be connected, and from which it can be removed with ease and dispatch, for convenience in moving or shipping.

The accompanymg drawing represents an inverted perspective view of a detached corner of a table illustrating the application of my invention.

I employ a metallic plate, A, ofthe shape represented, having a central web; a, supporting the iianges b secured to the rails B, which, as seen, do not meet, by screws c. The plate is furthermore strengthened by the top and bottom Webs cl and c, forming a part of it, and at right angles tothe web a. For further securing the plate in position two projecting flanges, f, extending the length of the plate, are placed' in kerfs g made in the rails. This relieves the screws of a part of the strain necessary to hold the leg iirmly in position. The

leg D, occupying its usual position, is made to fit in the recess formed by the ends of the rails and the central web a, and has two woodscrews, h, projecting from it some little dis tance, which are passed through orices t' in the web a. The legis then pressed down into position, the screws entering slots j, which are countersunk to receive their. heads. By giving them at'ew turns With a screw-driver the leg' is clamped and held firmly in position.

I am aware that the legs of tables have been made removable by the employment of corner-plates carrying sockets, into which the legs have been driven 5 and also of exterior plates, which, by means ot'bolts, hold the parts in their relative positions, but which are more complex in their structure, anddo not meet the object of my invention, as herein shown; but

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentn 1. The metallic plate A, having a central web, a., iianges b, and projecting flanges f, secured to the railsB, in the manner and for the purpose specified.

2. The leg D, arranged as shown, and clamped in position to the plate A, which is supported by the rails B by means of the wood-screws h, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
