KNOCKDOWN TABLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,918, dated January 29, 1889.

Be it known that I, HENRY A. BUTLER, of Syracuse, county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Knockdown Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l. is an elevation ot' one corner there of, the top being in section, looking inwardly toward the meeting angle of the side rails; Fig. 2, atop plan view thereof with table-top removed for better illustration, but shown by dotted lines; Fig. 3, a top plan view of a corner section, illustrating a slight modification in construction; Fig. the application of my device for removably securing the center leg in position, and Fig. 5 illustrates my construction as adapted to a round-cornered table.

Similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

My invention relates to tables constructed so as to be readily taken apart and shipped in knockdown shape, and especially to those constructed with detachable legs.

My object is to simplify the construction and to improve the table, and to reduce the space occupied in traiisportation.

My invention consists in the several. novel features of construction and operation, which are hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claim hereunto annexed.

It is constructed as follows: A-is the tabletop mounted upon the side rails, 1 1, and B is the leg squared at the top. In Fig. 2 I show these side rails rabbeted out at 3, forming part of the seat of the leg. To form the remainder ol' this seat, I secure the 'nmtallic bracket 4:, constructed of a form. proper to lit and lllClOSG a part of the top of the leg, and it is secured by the bolts 5 through the ends of the bracket and through the side rails and through the metallic stiffening-bar or corner piece, U, fitting on the outside of the meeting angle of the side rails. The

bracket -i. also provided with the set-screw '7, the point of which bears against the leg, and to give it a better seat or bearing I face off the leg at that point, as at 8, and may cover it with an iron protecting-piece, 9, if

desired. Thus when a leg is inserted the setscrcws 7 will. hold it rigidly in place, and when they are loosened the leg can be taken out and placed within the side rails, Land shipped in that position, the whole table then occupying the space of the thickn of the top and the width of the side rails.

In Fig. 3 I show the corner piece, 6, inside of the meeting angle of the side rails, its edges fitting in slotwayslO in the side rails, the heads of bolts 5 countersunk into the side rails, and a veneer, 1], applied around the angle and covering the bolt-heads.

In Fig. 5 I show the construction shown in Fig. 2 adapted to a rouml-cornered table.

In Fig. 4: I show the center-leg construction, in which 12 is the cross-rail, in which I cut out the edge angle, 13, and upon that, by gluing or nailing on pieces 14, I form the seat for the leg, of sufficient thickness to give it good support, and in that case the corner piece, (1', fits inside of the angle, and the bolt 5 simply screws into the wood, and the set-screw 7 holds the leg the same as in Fig. 1.

It will be observed that the construction shown enables me to secure a leg by means of the set-screws, to remove it by loosening the set-screws, and to ship all the legs within the space inclosed by the side rails.

\Vhat I claim'as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a knockdown table, in combination, the side rails rigidly secured together at their meeting angles by a metallic bracket of V- shaped form, and having slight project-ions at right angles thereto, all integral, slots at said extremities for the reception of fastening-bolts that pass through perforations in the side rails into and through the A-shaped metallic plate mounted opposite the aforesaid bracket, and the table-leg, squared at its top portion, with a corner thereof .faced off, and provided with. a flat metallic plate secured thereto, against which the set-screw passing through the bracket is adapted to hear when said leg inserted in its seat, substantially as shown and described.
