'Application filed JiiyQ,
in appearance, and efficient in use for secure-V ly clasping the frame-members of the bag to prevent unwarrantedy or accidental opening thereof. y
`Another object of the invention is to provide a bag fastener or clasp which is economi` cal to manufacture and convenient to assemble on practically all .types of bag frames:
Another object of the invention is to'prof vide a-device of the type specilied which is particularly strong and rugged; in construction and proof against .derangement or getting o ut of order n c Further objects of the improvement are set forthin the yfollowing specification which desc ibes a preferred embodiment of theinvention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings; v,In'the drawings;
Fig. 1 is view showing a conventional type of hand-bag `having its'hinged framemembers provided with the present improved clasp or fastening-means; 4
Fig. 2 is an end view of the same; Y Fig. 3j isa side view of a portion of the `bag frame showing the clasp orv fastener in opened or released position; and Fig.v 4E is an enlarged cross-sectional view ofthe frame and its fastening device, taken on line le-4C of Fig.` 1.
Referring to thedra'wings, Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate a usual style of hand-.bag or purse comprising a pouch 2, of leather or other .flexible material, having its mouth closed by mating frame-members 3 and l. The framemembers' 3 and 4 are generally constructed of shect-metal-of channel shape/in cross-section, as shownin Fig. 4 of the drawings, and their terminal portions are hinged togeth r by suitable means suoli as the rivets 5 illus-V trated in Fig. 2.
construction of the present invention, my improved clasp or fastening-deviceV comprises, essentially, a slide 7 slidable along the topy of one frame-member 3 and engageable Vover a guide 12.

. The slide 7 may be constructed lof anysuit-` able shape'v and as herein shown consists-Ofal rectangulai'fbloch having a setting-W901i'v its: top for mounting agjewel or ornament l() which embellishes its appearance.y The sl-ide 7 is:boredlongitudinallytoprovide a bearing l11 for ka horizontal rod 12 which serves as a guide or trackon which the slide slides. The
feiern Bancari-in ,Ann irnnitv f rod 12 may be mounted on the top of thebag frame in any suitable manner. anchas `hereinA showmit is held atl its ends in standards or.'
posts 15 secured to the frame-member 3.
`The posts 15 are preferably 'of ornamentalV 1 design and may comprise balls having'fla-nged standards which are soldered or riveted tothe top of the member ,3. are receivedinholes 16 in the posts 15 vand 1 Theends Vof the rod 12y may be riveted over to hold the .rod in parallel A spaced relation with respect to the top of the `frame afterthe slide .7 has beenplaced theremember l is the flat lug or lip 8, previously referred to, whichis soldered or riveted there*-V` to to` project from the top thereof. At one end of the lug 8 is an upsta'n'ding projection or abutmentlS which `acts as a stop to limit the sliding movement of the slide 7 in the y@n the opposite complementary frame--` manner and forthe purposeA as hereinafter eX- ,plaine-dl As shownin Figd, the underside of theslide 4' is forinedwitha relatively nar# row longitudinal slot or groove 20 adapted to engage over and enclose-the sides of .the'lug' 8 when the slide is moved to the left along its The end of the slot 2O is cut away or beveled Off'at 24 to adaptl the stop 18 tofit thereinto to be covered by the slidewben the latterbrings up thereagainst.r i
The slide Ziis preferably formed ior provided on one side with a depending ear or flange 21 which abnts the side of the frame.- rneinber '3 andthiis acts to holdk the slide from rocking or canting on theirod 12.1 On the under side of the slide .7 is asmall bore 22Lforming pocket for holding a helical spring 23.
p r 'y The spring 2B'encloses the stem of a headed In accordance with a preferredvform of pin V25 `and acts to force the latterv down against 'the top, of the frame-member 3 to i cause it tending slide.
i frictional resistance to its Vsides abutting as shown in Fig fi Having now described the construction of a preferred en'ibodin'ient of the inventionin detail, itsmcthod of operation will next be explained. lith the Vslide 7 pushed to the right as shown in F ig. 2l its slot 2() tree of the lip or lug 8 on the traineeneniber 3 so that the two opposite traineaneinbers may be swung apart on their hinges 5 to open the mouth ot' the bag. litter the frame-members 3 and l have been brought into closed relation as shown in Fig. i2 they are clasped or fastened together at the top by sliding the slide 'T to the lett,`or into central position on its rod 1Q as illustrated in Fig. l. As the slide 7 is carried into this position its groove 20 will engage over .the lip or il and thereby etectually clasp the two framcineni bers land 4; in closed relation with their p h Asl' noted, the end of the slide 'i' brings up agar the projection or stop 18 to limit its ding movement in fastening the clasp, and the spring-pressed pin or plunger 25 eAi arts a movenient in the opposite direction whenV to prevent its accidental or unwarranted release.
It Will be observed from the aaove that my invention provides a simple and etiicient device for the purpose specified which may be manufactured at relatively low cost and which isadapted tor use with prac illy all types of bag frames. VThe slide or clasp and its supporting rod or guide enhances the ornamental appearance of the bag or other article while at the same time providingr a particularly sturdy and reliable device for the purpose specified; The claspingencans is adapt? ed for easy and convenient operation both in opening the bag and fastening its trames members in closed relation, and provides add' ed security in that the clasp is proof against accidental or unwarranted release due to its trictional detent-means. i
While I have hereindescribed and illus trated a preferred term of construction of the device various modifications may be made in the'design and arrangement ofits parts Without departing from the spiritor scope ot' the invention as defined in the appended claims. Therefore, without limitation in this respect, I claim i l.
