'Be it'lmown that I, JOHN R. STARCK, a citizen of the. United States, and a resident of Weehawken,-in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved. Separable Fastener, of which scription.

The present invention relates to new and useful improvements inseparable fasteners, and it pertains more particularly to a jewelryclasp of the type employed on wrist-watch bands, bracelets and similararticles for personal wear. i

It is one of the primary objects of the present invention to provide a separable fastener for articles of this character for which a positive fastening between the two members is had.

It is a further object of the invention to be longer lived than are clasps of this type as generally constructed.

It is a still further object of the invention to provide a clasp of this character which is simple in operation.

With the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of'a clasp constructed in accordance with the present invention, said clasp being shown in its closed position;

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device comprises two members 11 and 12 adapted to be attached each to its respective end of a band13, which forms the wrist-watch band, bracelet, or other article of apparel to which the clasp may be at-. tached. The member 11 comprises a bar or plate of sheet metal provided with slots 14, by means of which it is attached to the article of apparel and said slots form the main bar or plate with a body portion 15 which in turn is provided with head members 16 of which there are two shown in the drawings It is obvious, however, that thenumber of head members 16 may be increased or and exact dehead members 16 carried by diminished to meet the requirement of the clasp. v V

The member 12 is in the form of a plate provided with a slot 17 by means of which the article of'apparel 13 is attached, andsaid plate is cut out to provide a suitable ornamental design'18. With the 'ornamentaldesign 18 and preferably forming a part there v of-is a plurality of spaced fingers 19, said fingers being of. a resilient nature. There is one pair of these fingers for each of the the member 11, and the 'description of one set of, said fingers therefore will suffice. The spring fingers 19 are each formed from the metal of the mem ber'12 and said fingers are rigidly connected to the metal member 12 as at 20,- by being formed integral therewith. These fingers 19 lie in spaced relation one to the other and converge slightly toward each other as indicated by the reference character 21. At one end of the fingers the space between the two is enlarged as indicated by the reference character 22 and is circular in form of a size to permit of the freeinsertion of its respective head member 16. At the opposite end of the fingers, said fingers are spaced as indicated by the reference character 23 and are curved as indicated by thereference 35 character 24 to receive the shanks 25 of their respective head members 16, as shown in Fig. 4. The space between the spring fingers 19 slightly in advance of the curved portion 24 thereof, is less than the diameter of the shank 25 in order that as the shank passes through the space between the fingers,

This form of the invention operates as follows: V

The head members 16 are inserted in the enlarged portions 22 of the space between the fingers 19 and the shanks 25 of the head 109 members are moved through the space between the fingers 19 until the shanks pass into the curved portions 24 of said fingers. Just before the shanks pass into the curved portions 24, due to the converging disposition of the fingers 19, a binding action will be exerted upon the shanks 25 and will spring the -fingers19 to permit of the shanks passing into said curved portions 24. As soon as the shanks enter the curved portions 24, the fingers spring back to normal position and prevent accidental displaceto enter the curved portions ment of the shanks with respect to their respective curved portions thereof and thus retain the shanks in their respective cnrved portions.
