E. ARNOLD ET AL BOX COVER Filed 25, "17927 V as Patented flee. 11, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD ARNOLD AND HENRY TEMPLETON, or YAKI A, WASHINGTON.
Box oovnn.
Application filedApril 25, 1927. Serial No. 186,451.
kinds of dry goods, are put up in containers by the manufacturers which are suitable in which to leave the goods for display and inspection by customers in the stores, after the tops have been removed therefrom. Such display, however, must be made in accordance with the sanitary laws which have been passed in the various States,so that the edibles, if that be the kind of goods displayed, may be kept in pure and fresh condition.
'lransparent box covers heretofore used for such display of goods are non-adjustable. It is a primary objcct'of the present invention to provide an adjustable cover which can be used upon boxes of varying sizes, which can be made cheaply and at the same time comply withthe requirements of the sanitary laws.
Further objects and advantages of the in vention will be set forth in the detailed description which follows.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the cover in place upon a box.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. is a vertical View in section illustrating the manner in which the sections of the cover overlap at the top and sides of the I box.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of one of the outer sections, hereinafter described, and
5 is a sectional view showing the means for holding the sections in fixed relation to one another.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.
In carryin out the invention, we provide a pair of frame sections 5, which are disposed at diagonally opposed corners of the box, and a pair of frame sections 6, which are disposed at the other corners of the box.
Each of the sections 5 comprises a right an box 4, and has a horizontal flange 7 extending inwardly along the edge of the box, and a vertical portion 7 b extending downwardly along the outside edge ofthe box.
A horizontal inner flange member 7? is affixed beneath the flange 7 and in spaced relation thereto, to provide a recess or groove for holding a pane of glass, celluloid, or other transparent material 10, in position over the top of the box. The frame sections -6 are disposed in such position as to slide beneath the frame sections5, when the cover is being adjusted upon the box, and have parts 9938, 8 which correspond to the parts 7, 7", 7 of the sections 5; The lower edge of the vertical portion 7 is curvedupwardly and inwardly to form a way or trough 9 and the lower edge of the member 8 is off-- set at 11 to fit in the trough Q-and to slide therein when adjustment of the cover is be-. 7
ing made. v
A horizontal rod 12 is fastened at one end 13 upon one of the lnner sections 6 and its free end extends through a projection 15 upon one of the sections 5, into a sheath or tube 14 attached to or formed in the ver ticalportion 7 of the outer section 5. The
, 6 may be so adjusted with respect to each other that boxes of Widely varying sizes may be covered by the device, and that at all times the panes of transparent material 10 are disposed in overlapping relation to effectually prevent dust and dirt from getting into the box. Adjustment may be made in either longitudinal or lateral direction so that the same cover may be used upon a long or square box. Thus a box, which is slightly less in width than one of the panes of transparent material 10 and which is only slightly less in length than the combined length of one of each of the sections 5 and 6, may be covered, while square or rectangular boxes of various dimensions maybe covered.
lVhile it is preferred to use transparent material as stated, it is manifest that the various adjustable sections may carry screen material instead of transparent panes, if desired, where the purpose sought is to protectthe fruit from insects. It is manifest that many Ways may be resorted to for slidably mounting the sections with respect to each other. However, the particular Way in Which the metal oi the frames'is bent to bring about sliding engagement between them is immaterial, because, as before stated, there are many Ways of accomplishing this result. Therefore it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth pane and an L-shaped l ramemember, sai
but that it includes within its purview Whatever changes fairly come Within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claims.
Having described our invention What We claim is:
1. The combination with a box having an open top side, of a cover there'l'or, comprising tour horizontally disposed members, each of said members consisting oi a transparent transparent pane being supported Wholly from its outer side and end portions by being gripped by its companion Lehaped frame member, the inner sidesand edges of said transparent pane being Wholly free to lie in snug and close fitting relation to the other transparent panes, at such portions thereof as overlap, two 0t said L-shaped frame members having their lower edges bent to form V channeled portions adapted to slidably re ceive the companion L-shaped members, said frame members being of such Width as to extend down over and embrace the sides of the box to a considerable extent, to thereby insure the retention of the cover upon the ends of the transparent panes are received, a
two or said frame members being bent to channeled formation along their lower edges to adapt them to shdably receive the vertical Webs oi' the two companion frame mem bers, and an offset rod'secured to one or said trams members, a perforate. element carried i by another oi said frame members through Which-said rod slides, and a binding means carried by said perforate element.
8. A structure as recited in claim 1, in combination with a binding means upon one o t said frame members anda rigid element upon.
another of said frame members slidably e gagged with said binding means, whereby when said binding means is tightened the frame members Will be; held: against slidi movement with respectto each other,
In testimony whereof they afiin their. signatures.
