YANIrfIATED TOY.
Application led YSepiteinlgcr 6, 1927. Serial 170,217,779.
This invention relates to lan animated toy and is designed more particularly as an improvement upon the structure disclosed in my co-pending lapplicationfiled January 29, 5 1927, Serial No. 164,561. Y y i One of the objects of the invention is to simplify the mechanism utilized for actuating the eyes, ears and tongue of the animal simulatedy by 'the toy and to. simplify and l otherwise improve uponthe leg operating mechanism. I
Vith the foregoing and other objects in lView which will 'appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the coml bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of `construction hereinafter-described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment ofthe invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of -whatis claimed, without def parting from the spiritof the invention.
Tn the accompanying drawings, the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings,
body portion being shown in section to illustrate the propelling mechanism therein.
Figure 2 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of the complete 3o to 3Figure 3 is a cent-ral longitudinal section j through the head portion.
Figure 4 is a horizontal sect-ion through the head portion.
Figure 5 is a detail View of one of the eyes and adjacent parts.
Figure 6 is a detail view of one of the ear members and adjacent parts.
Figure 7 is an enlarged transverse section through the tongue mechanism.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 98L designates the head portion of the top pivotally connected. as at 99` to brackets 100 extending forwardly from the body portion 101. Itis to be understood that this body portion and the head Vwill be provided with a suitable covering whereby thetoy will simulate some animal. Pivoted in openings 102 and 103 in the bottom. portion of the body are the upper leg members 104 and 105 of the front andrear legs respectively, these members being in the form of levers fulcrumed as indicated at 106. A spring motor 107 is mounted in the body and ,drives a double crank 108 connected to pitmans 109 Figure 1 is a top plan View of the toy, the
and 110 extending in opposite directions within the body; Pitman 110 is connected to the upper end ofthe leg member 105 while pitman 109 is connected to an extension 111 `at the upper end of the leg Vmember 104. A
'cross lever'112 is fulorumed at 113 in the llever engages the corresponding extension of the other front'leig; A similar crossV lever 114 1s provided in the rear portion of the V body for connecting the upper portions of the rear legs. Thus the two front legs'willl swing in opposite directions respectively and thev same is true of thetwo rear legs, all of the legs being actuated by the pitmans 109 and 1,10 from the crank 108. yThe lowermembers 1150i the front legs are pivotally connected to the upper members at 116 and have feet 117 hing'edly connected to the lower ends 'shown at 118. Stops 119 are provided adjacent the hinges for limiting the movement ci the feet. A similar construction is provided at the lower end of each of the rear legs.' Arms 120 are extendedupwardly from the members 115 and are connected by rods 121 to a lever 122 which, in turn, is connected by rods 123 to arms 124 extending upwardly from the lower members of the rear legs.
Thus when the motor is in operation the legs will be actuated to cause the toy to move forwardly as will be obvious. An upstanding lever 125 is connected by a rod 126 to the uppei'portion 105 of one of the legs and this lever is also connected by a rod 127 to one` side of the head 98 as shown at 128. Conse`A quently as the toy moves forwardly the head -will be caused t-o swing laterally relative to tion of the tongue and is connectedto the rear portion of the aw which is in the form of a lrear extension ofthe dovetail 131. A spring connects this yoke 134 to the top of the head and thus tends to hold the jaw 129 normally swung downwardly at its front end so as to simulate an open mouth. A cord inico dicated at 136 is attached to the rear portion of the tongue and extends through one or more guides 137 to the extension 111; on one of the front legs. 'I`hus it will be seen that as this front leg swings relative to the body it will successively pull and then releasecord 136 with the result that tongue 132 will be swung backwardly and released and' at the same time be swung downwardly and thence` upwardly. When the cord is released springs 133 and 135 will return the parts to their initial positions but when the cord ispulled these springs will be elongated.
Openings 138 are provided in,` the head 98 for the eye balls 139.VV These balls-are supported by bearing pins-140and arms 141 extending inwardly therefrom. Each arm is connected by a rod 142 to the inner end portion of a lever 143 pivotally mounted within and extendingoutwardly :from the head 98 as shown clearly in the drawings. Another rod 144 is extended-from the inner end of each lever 143- and attached` to the body 101 close to the head. 'Ihus it will be seen that during the torwardmovement ot the toy as heretofore explained the head` will be swung laterally and each time. it swingslaterally the rods 144and 142 will'fcause the levers 143 and the arms 141toswing. Consequently thecovcringe-ofthe outer endsof levers 143 which simulate ears will be caused to wag whileY the halls 139 which simulate the eyes will rotate.
What is claimed is:
1. In an animated toy the combinationwith `a body, and means for propelling-the, body,
said means including pivoted leg members and a clock mechanism for operatmgthe leg `members, of an upstandinglevema rod connection between said lever and one of the leg members, a laterally movable head connected tothe body, a-rodconnecting said upstanding lever to one side of the head, for swinging thek head laterally when the lever is actuated, eye balls exposed within the head, ear levers tulcrumed within and extending from the head, inwardly ,extending arms uponrthe eye balls, connecting rods between said arms and the respective ear levers, connecting rods between said. ear levers and the body, and coverings on the projecting portions of the ear levers simulating ears.
2. In an animated toy the combination with a body and-means for propelling the same for. wardly, said means including pivoted' leg members and a- Cloclr, mechanism for operating the leg mechanism, o1" ahead mounted to swing laterally relative to the body, means for transmitting motionto thehead from one of the leg members, eye ballsrotatably mounted in the head', inwardly extending arms thereon, ear levers fulcrnmed within and eX- tending outwardy from thehead, rods connecting the arms to the respective ear levers, rods connecting the ear levers to the body, and means for swinging the head laterally to shift the same relative to. the points ot con-- nection between the rods andthe body, thereby to actuate the ear levers and the eye balls.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing s my own, I have hereto aiiixed my signature.
