VANITY CASE.

My invention relates to containers and,

more particularly, to novelty containers and vanity cases.

The object of the invention is to simplify the construction of suchcontainers while preserving a rugged structure and a neat and artistic appearance, the manner of putting the parts together being such as eliminate manyof the elements now used 1n the construction of such articles and to reduce the number of tools and dies intheir manufac- In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of my invention, viz, a container simulating a book, this figure showing the container as closed;

Figure 2 is a lan view of the same container when open; igure 3 is a cross section of the same container taken along the line 3- 3 of Figure l; and Figure l is afragmentary perspective view of the same container with certain parts unassembled, in order to elucidate the construction.

Referring to the figures in detail, 1 is an open frame made'of sheet metal and constituting the four walls of a container designed to simul'ate'a book, the front and the two end walls representing: the front and the end leaf edges of the book. Atits nether periphery,-

frame 1 is bent to provide outwardly proj ecting flan es 2 on three sides,.viz, at the front and at t e two ends of the book, fA-second frame'2, also open, butfiat, ishinged to the back wall of frame 1 in any standard fashion, as by means of the hinge 6'.- The frame 2 is 7 simply asq'uare piece of sheet metal having a square'hole cut out of it so as to leave edges somewhat wider than the flanges 2 of frame 1. Each frame is provided with a cover plate, preferably also of sheet metal, the cover plate 3 forming the bottom, and the cover plate 3' the top, of the container. To the twocover plates 3 and 3 is secured a facing 4, preferably made of leather, to simulate the leather cover of a book, which extends over the entire surface of the two cover plates and over theback wall of frame 1. The cover plates 3 and 3', together with the facing 4, areheld in place by-meansof the channel members 5, 5, which extend over the front and the two ends of the book and firmly clamp the cover plate 3 with the facing, to the flanges 2. of frame 1, and the cover plate 3 with the facing to the edges of frame 2. The walls of framel may be provided with additional butinwardtwo parts, one of said parts comprising an ly projecting flanges 7. The space formed by the frame 1 and cover plate 3 may be divided into compartments. In the illustration shown in Figure 2, which is designed fora usual pads may also be provided, as is indicated on the drawing in dotted lines and the numerals 12 and 13. A mirror 15, set within the bezels 1 1 formed by the inward edges of frame 2,- rests against the cover plate 3'. The bezels 14 are so spaced that when the container is closed they can passy e inwardly projecting flanges 7 of frame lock or catch 8 is shown in'Figures 2 and 3, to hold the cover plate 3 down when the container is closed. The facing 4 is turned inwardly at 16 in a manner similarto that used in book binding.

While I have illustrated myinvention as applied to a vanity case shaped tosimulate a book, clearly, the construction shown is'applicable to containers of difi'erent shape for diflerent purposes, the main feature of the invention residing in the formation of a box by making an open frame to serve as its tuting the walls of said container, and the other part comprising a flat 0 en frame hinged to said first mentioned rame, outwardly projecting flanges on said first mentioned frame at one of its peripheries, a cover .plate conforming to the shape of said first mentioned frame and constituting the bottom of said container, a cover plate conforming to the 'shape of said flat open frame and constituting the top of said container, a facing extending over said cover plates and over the hinged portions of said frames, a

separate channel member clamping said the clamping said facing and said top cover plate to theedges of said flat open frame.

A container simulating a book. made of being Ajspring mg and said bottom cover plate to said I flanges, and a separate channel member open frame constituting the walls of said container, the front and the two end walls representing the front and the end leaf edges of said book, and the other part comprising a flat openframe hinged to the back wall of said first mentioned frame, outwardly projecting front and end flanges on said first mentioned frame along oneof its peripheries a cover plate conforming to the shape of ,said first mentioned frame and constituting the bottom of said container, a cover plate conforming to the shape of said fiat open frame and constituting the top of said corrtainer, a facing extending over said cover plates and over the back wall of said first mentioned frame simulating the cover of a book, a separate channel member clamping said facing and said bottom cover plate to said flanges the entire length thereof, and a separate channel member clamping said facing and the front and end edges of said top cover plate to the corresponding edges of said flat open frame.

A Vanity case simulating a book and made of two parts, one of said parts comprising an open frame constituting the walls of said case, the front and the two end walls stituting the bottom of said case, a cover plate conforming to the shape of said flat open frame and constituting the top of said case, bezels along the inner edges of said flat frame to hold a mirror against the cover plate thereof and fitting within the inwardly projecting flanges of said first mentioned frame, a facing extending over said cover plates and over the back wall of said first mentioned frame simulating the cover of'a book, a separate channel member clamping said facing and said bottom cover plate to said outwardly projecting flanges the entire length thereof, and a separate channel member clamping said facing and the front and end edges of said top cover plate to the corresponding edges of said flat frame. 1
