COMBINATION FOUNTAIN PEN AND .CIGARETTE HOLDER.
Application 'tiled October 24, 1925. Serial No. 64,494.
This invention relates to a fountain pen, and particularly to an attachment whereby the fountain pen may also be used as a cigar or cigarette holder.
The object of the present invention is to generally improve and simplify the construction and o eration of devices of the character described; to provide a fountain pen which may be lilled with ink to allow writing when desired; to provide a cap for the pen which may also serve as a cigar or cigarette holder; to provide a mouthpiece; and, furthermore, to so construct the several parts that a. central smoke passage is formed between the holder and the mouthpiece thereby permitting the device as a whole to serve as a cigar or cigarette holder when smoking.
One form which the invention may assume is exemplified in the accompanying drawings and specifications in which- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of the combination fountain pen and cigarette holder,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the pen showing the cap in position,
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the pen showing the position of the cap when the device s employed for writing,
Figure 4 is a cross section on line L1--4, Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, and particularly Figure 1: A indicates a barrel which is closed at opposite ends by the head members, shown at B and C. The head member B carries the pen, 2, and the ends provide a passage, 3, through which the pen is fed with ink.
On the head member C is a threaded connection with the opposite end of the barrel A as shown at 4 and it serves as a closure for the end of the barrel. It also serves as a mouth piece when smoking as will hereinafter be described.
The head member or mouth piece C is provided with an inner tubular extension, 5. which is secured in the member C or formed integral therewith. The tube forms a continuation of a passage, 6, in the mouth piece and it is extended to enter the central assage, 7, formed in the head member, B. The tube, 5, is provided with a shoulder for the rece tion of the packing gasket, 9, and this gas et serves the function of forming a leak proof joint between the tube 5 and the central passage 7 when the mouth piece or member C is secured in the barrel A.
An annular chamber is formed within the barrel and exterior of the tube 5 and this chamber is adapted to be filled with ink, as indicated at 10 when the head member B o0 is unscrewed; that is, the screw connection 11 1s also formed between the head B and the barrel.
The pen, as a whole, is otherwise provided with a tubular cap D which carries an inner head or closure, 12. This closure is secured to the cap or formed integral therewith and it forms a support for the inner tube 13 which is screwed thereto. This tube is threaded at its opposite end as shown at 14 70 and the central passage 7 of the member B is also threaded to receive the tube.
An annular chamber 15 is formed between the tubular cap D and the inner tube 13 and this annular chamber forms a receptacle for the pen 2 when the cap is applied as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
he cap serves two functions-either that of a cap or closure for the pen or that of a cigar or cigarette holder. The outer end is lo provi-ded with a. removable reducer head, 16. The head when applied serves the function of a receiver supporting a cigarette, as indicated by dotted lines, at 17. The head when removed permits the insertion of cigars as shown by dotted lines, at 18. 1 The operation of the device will be as folows:
With the several parts assembled as shown in Figure 1 the device servesas a cigar or cigarette holder, as it is only necessary to place a cigarette or cigar in the outer end of the cap as indicated in Figures 1 and 2, and then place the mouthpiece in the mouth, as usual. The smoke of the cigarette or cigar g5 passes through the tube 13, the passage 7, the tube 5 and the passage 6. The passage of the smoke through the device can do no injury to the pen as this is protected by the chamber 15 and contamination of the ink cannot take 100 place as this is entirely sealed with relation to the smoke passage formed through the several connecting tubes.
If it is desired to use the device as a fountain pen, it is only necessary to remove the cap m5 D and place it on the opposite end of the barrel or the mouthpiece The pen 2 is then exposed andthe device may be used as an ordinary fountain pen as the ink will be automatically fed to the pen through passage ilo 3 as writing proceeds.
If it is desired to refill the fountain pen at Y barrel havin any time, it is only necessary to unscrew 'the head, B and hold the barrel A in a vertical position. lnk ma then be dropped in the annular chamber ormed between the barrel and the inner tube 5 or it may be filled by means of an ordinar dropper. Leakage ot the ink into the smo e passage is prevented when the head is again threaded as the gasket 9 is compressed between the inner end and the head of shoulder 8. No leakage can take place between the tube 5 und the mouth piece :1s u permanent connection is made or it is :formed integral with the mouth piece.
'While certain features of the invention are more or less specically illustrated and described, l wish it understood that changes may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims; also, that the materials and finish of the several parts employed may be changed to suit varying conditions and to produce ornamental effects.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by LettersPatent 1s l. An article of manufacture comprising u barrel having an ink containingr chamber termed therein; a head member on each end of the barrel and forming closures for the ink chamber; one head adapted tocarry a pen; a mouth piece on the opposite head; means whereby a cigarrette may be supported with relation to the first named head and means whereby smoke is conyeyed from the cigarette supporting means to the mouth piece.
2. An article of manufacture comprising a barrel having an ink containing chamber formed therein; a head member on each end of the barrel and forming closures for the ink chamber; one head adapted to carry a pen; a mouth piece on the opposite head; means whereby a cigarette may be supported with relation to the tirst'named head and means whereby smoke is conveyed from the cigarette supporting means through the heads and the barrel to the mouth piece.
3. An article of manufacture comprising a an ink containing chamber formed therem; a head member on each end menace ot the barrel and forming closures tor the inh chamber; one head adapted to carry a pen; a mouth piece on the opposite head; a combination ca and cigarette holder adapted to be attache to the first named. head and means whereby smoke is conveyed through the cap, the heads and the barrel to the mouth piece.
4. An article of manufacture comprisingl a barrel having un ink containing chamber formed therein; a head member on cach end of the barrel and forming closures for the ink chamber; one head adapted to carry u pen; a mouth piece on the opposite head; a combination cap and cigarette holder adapted to be attached to the first named head; and a tubular connection formed between the cap and the mouth piece and extending through the cap, the heads and the barrel.
5. An article of manufacture comprising a barrel having an ink containing chamber formed therein; a head member on each end ot the barrel and Jforming closures for the ink chamber; one head adapted to carry a pen; a mouth piece on the opposite head; a combination cap and cigarette holder adapted to be attached to the first named head and a tubular connection formed between the cap and the mouth piece and extending;r through the cap. the heads and the barrel, said iirst named head having an interlocking connection with the said tubular connection for permitting the removal oit the irst named head to ll the ink chamber.
6. An article of manufacture comprising an elongated tube, a mouthpiece secured on one end thereof, a pen head secured on the opposite end oit the'tube, a barrel surroundl ing the tube` said barrel beingl secured at its opposite end to the pen head and to the mouthpiece and forming an annular ink containing chamber, said pen head adapted to carry a pen, a cap carried by the pen head for enclosing the pen; a cigarette holder in the outer end ot said cap, and a tube carried by the cigarette holder and adapted to form communication between the cigarette holder and the first named tube.
