Description

Patented June 5, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE 2,377,379 v I SMOKING PIPE Joseph Saulnier, Falmouth, Mass.
Application November 16, 1942, Serial No. 465,754 3 Claims. (cl; 131 -224) This invention relates to smoking pipes.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved bowl for a pipe which includes a bottom part and an upper part,'the latter being hinged to the bottom part.
'Another object of this invention is to provide an improved bowl which is formed with an overhanging rim which will act 'to prevent'the to bacco from spilling out of the bowl.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved bowl which will permit insertion of the new tobacco from the bottom portion of the bowl, and which will facilitate cleaning of the bowl.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved bowl including a hinged upper part and a lower part formed with a chamber in which a combined filter and moisture absorbing element is positioned.
With the foregoing objects and others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a detail to plan of a smoking pipe constructed according to an embodiment of this invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral In designates generally a pipe bowl having a stem ll carried by the lower portion thereof and a mouthpiece I3 is mounted in the inner portion of the stem H. The stem H has a bore I2 extending therethrough which terminates at its forward end in a chamber l4 which is formed in the lower ortion of the bowl [0.
The bowl I is formed of an upper part [5 and a lower bowl part l6. The two bowl members I 5 and [6 are hingedly secured together by a hinge H which has one leaf l8 thereof secured by fastening means l9 to the lower end of the upper bowl member H3. The other leaf 2!! of the hinge IT is secured by fastening means 2| to the upper side of the lower bowl member IS.
The lower bowl member I 6 is formed with a flat upper side 22 against which the flat lower end'23of the upper bowl member I5 isadapted to engage. In order to provide a means whereby the two bowl members 15 and [6 may be sealed relative to each other,'I have provided a cylindrical member 24 which is secured by detents 25 in the lower bowl member IS. .The sealing member 24 is an inner sealing member, and has a portion thereof projecting downwardly into an opening 26 which is formed in the lowerbowl member IS. A substantial portion of the lower inner member 24 extends upwardly above the upper side 22 of the lower member l6 and is adapted to telescopingly engage within a cylindrical ring or upper sealing member 21. The upper sealing member 21 is mountedin a recess 28 which is formed in the lower portion of the upper bowl member 15 and is firmly secured within the recess 28 by means of detents 29. The part 21 has a fairly loose fit over part 24 the fit being just tight enough to prevent any tobacco particles from leaking out of the bowl. It will be understoodthat while. this may be a' sealing fit as to tobacco it is not a 'liquid tight seal and there will be a'very slight space between element 24 and. 21. A combined filter and moisture absorbing element 30 is mounted in the bottom portion 16 and may be formed of any suitable fibrous filtering means which will permit the smoke to pass from the interior of the bowl In to the passage l2.
The filtering member 30- is formed of moisture absorbing material, so as to absorb the moisture which accumulates in the bottom of the bowl Ill. The upper bowl member I5 has mounted in a recess 3|, formed in the upper end thereof, a cylindrical member 32. The cylindrical member 32 is secured in the recess 3| by means of detents 33, and the cylindrical member 32 is formed with an inwardl rojecting annular flange 34 which provides a restricted opening in the upper end of the upper bowl member I5. The flange 34 is substantially flush with the upper side 35 of the upper bowl member l5, and the opening 36 formed by the flange 34 is sufliciently small to prevent the unburned tobacco, and also ashes from the burned tobacco, from dropping out of the bowl when the pipe is laid on its side.
In the use of this pipe the upper bowl member I5 is adapted to be swung upwardly and inwardly in order to fill the bowl, the unburned tobacco being inserted into the upper bowl member 15 from the bottom thereof. The flange 34 will provide a means whereby the tobacco will be held against outward movement at the upper end of the bowl l0, and when the upper bowl member I has been filled it may be swung downwardly to a closed position which is the position shown in Figure 2. In this position the two annular members 24 and 21 will be in telescoping position and will seal the lower portion of the bowl. In order to prevent the tobacco from being pushed out of or dropped through the opening 38 when the part I5 is being filled, the finger of the user is held over the opening. 3.6 while thepipe is-being filled, as is customary with pine smokers in filling; their pipes.
The combined filtering'and moisture absorbing; material 30 will filter the smoke being drawn toward the passage l2 and will also absorb any moisture accumulating in the bottom portion of the bowl.
With a pipe of this kindit-is; aneasy'matter to not only fill the pipe bowl in such a manner that.
I claim? 1. In. combination a-pipea bowl formed. of'an upper hinged portion: and. a lower portion. said bowl having arr overhanging rim, a stem having a. bore; extending theretirrough. carried by said lower portion. a. mouthpiece mountedin the inner portion of: said stem, said here terminating: at its forward end in. a chamber termed: inssid lower portion, said lower bowl. portion, a tilt upper side,. said upperhinged portion. having a.
