UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY LEIBERMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. YQASSIGNOR TO GROOVE LOCK CO. INC., OF
NEW YORK, N. Y., .A. CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
.VANIIY CASE.
Application filed November 17, 1927. Serial No. 283,777.
This invention relatesto improvements in containers, such as vanity cases and the like, and has particular reference to a novel hinge connection and holding means for cases with circular outlines.
There is considerable demand for circular containers with hinged covers, but prior to this invention, it has been diflicult to provide such a container with a hinge of suitable mechanical strength. It has been customary to form the hinges of straight wire or the like and arrange the same substantially tangent to the edge of the container. In order to do this,-it has been necessary to provide a hinge lug which extends a substantial distance from the edge wall of the container, or to provide the hinge pin of such a short length as to have an inadequate bearing. Naturally, hinge lugs which project too far from the edge of the container detract from the appearance of the device, and particularly with respect to vanity cases, the question of appearance is of vital importance in itsdesirability.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a hinge connection with circular cases, wherein the hinge pin has a relatively long bearing, yet, the connection will extend only a minimum distance from the edge of the case.
Another object is to provide a novel and simplified means for maintaining the case sections in closed relation.
Another object is to provide a vanity case of extremely simple construction, of neat appearance, strong and durable in service and constituting a substantial advance in the art.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth, shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved vanity case with the parts in closed and locked position, v
Fig. 2 is a front edge view of the same partly broken away and. partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing one of the case sections as having been rotated with reference to the other,
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on line 4.-4 of Fig. 3, showing more clearly the novel bayonet slot connection, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the case with the parts in open relation. Referring now particularly to the drawlngs, the novel vanity case has been shown as comprising a pair of case sections 10 and 11, having opposed open sides and being hingedly connected together as at 12. Sections 10 and 11 may be conveniently formed of sheet metal or the like, and respectively include a bottom wall 13 surrounded by a circumferential edge wall or rim 14 and a top wall 15 having an integral edge wall or flange 16. Said case sections are circular in outline, as best shown in Figures 1 and 3 and the edge wall 13 of the section 11 is preferably spun or otherwise offset to provide a peripheral flange 17 which is adapted to fit within the edge wall 14 of the section 10.
Secured to or integral with the edge wall 14 of the casing section 10 is a hinge member 18 having an aperture 19 which is curved concentrically with respect to the periphery of the wall 14, and the casing section 11 is similarly provided with a hinge member 20 having an aperture 21 of the same radius of curvature as the aperture 19 and adapted to be aligned therewith. A hinge pintle 22 extends through the apertures 19 and 21 of said hinge members and is preferably of a length greater than the combined length of said. hinge members. By virtue of this arrange ment, one extremity of the hinge pintle .eX- tends beyond the end of the hinge member 20 when the case is closed and looked, as shown in Figure 1, and furthermore, the casing section 11 is adapted to be rotated with reference to the section 10 about their common axes. In said rotation, the hinge member 20 moves longitudinally upon the pintle 22.
At a suitable point, preferably diametrically opposed to the hinge connection, the flange 17 is provided with a bayonet slot 23 which is adapted to receive a locking pin 24 carried by the edge wall 14 of the other case section, The arrangement is such that when the parts are related, as illustrated in Figures 3 and 4, the case section 11, which is in effect a hinged cover, may be moved toward and away from the case section 10. In order to close the case and lock it, said section 11 need only be swung down against the section 10 andpartially rotated to bring the pin 24 I different planes;
From the foregoing, it will be evident that an improved vanity case or similar container hasbeen'provided, wherein the parts are of extremely simple construction and capable of being produced at relatively low cost. The
tions with such rotation.
3. In a vanitycase or the like, a pair of substantlall y c1 rcular case sections having opposed open sides, one of said case sections invention is, of course. susceptible of numcrhaving a circumferential flange adapted to ous modifications in the details of construction and arrangement of parts, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A container of the class described, comprising a pair of casing sections having rims hingedly connected together, the hinge connection being so formed as to permit rotation of one of the casing sections with reference to the other, said sections having interengaging parts to secure the sections together or release same upon such rotation.
fit within the other section, said flange being provided with a bayonet slot, and the other case section being provided with an inwardly extending pin to engage in said slot, hinge lugs carried by the case sections in diametri cally opposed relation to said slot and pin, and a curved hinge pintle connecting said case sections through the hinge lugs, said hinge pintle permitting relative rotation of the case sections about their common axes and being yieldable to permit opening and closing of the case.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as any invention, I have signed my name hereto.
HARRY LEBERMAN.
