toilet articles and of this invention to j intended to be I modified to bring about which, pointed the former preferably the compartment 12 a plan view of a modified em-.
ytacle 10 extending on the line 77 of characters refer to simi- Renewed July 19,: 1927.: v r r of this'invention, it may at this point be noted that certain'cosn'ietics each with a device for applyrngjit find most frequent'use in the ladys boudoi'r; these cosmetics are generally apphed successively, and
generally the eifectp'roduced by one is incomplete without the eifect produced by another. For example, the lipstick may readily enough e made to bring out the desired effectin so far as'thefjlips alone are concerned,.but the ensemble effect might be anything but the desired one were notla cosmetic such asrouge applied to the face; but even the effect the lipstick might be and generally is in turn semble effect by tempering of rouge with powder. A I 7 this invention is :toprovide a receptacle in for eXample,. the? three cosmetics out; byway of example may be not only conveniently concentrated, but. also made readily and conveniently"accessible for prompt and quick application.
eferringnow to the drawing and more particularly to Figures generallyi-ndicated at 10 is in general of an elongated shape and which is provided with severalcompartments these compartments may and preferably do comprise a central compartment 11 and an end producedby' the. rouge and I the intended en-.
land 2, there is I a receptacle which compartment 12, each preferably circular and thanthe latter. be placed a supply of powder13, preferably of larger diameter In the compartment 11 may in the form of a compact, and the compart- I ment 11 is. of such depth that it may comfort ably receive. therein the powder puff 14;. In may be placed such a cosmetic as rouge, indicated at 15, andpreferably in the form of partment 12 is 'ofsuch veniently- "receive the rouge-applying device or puff 16.-
, Upon that side of the compartment 11 r er mote from the compartment 12 the recepw is provided with a compartment 17 tire device be relatively small and compact, the length of the slot or compartment 17 in ;a compact, and thevcoma depth asto contransversely of the receptacle 10 V the shape ofa'slot eX- depending lugs 22 2 Lee a direction transversely of .the receptacle. l preferably approximates the length of the standard lipstick.
The receptacle 19 the contour of which closely approximates or is coincident with the contour of the receptacle 10, the lid or cover 19 being provided with a handle20. The lid 19 is preferably -fiat and in order to center the coverlS) upon thev receptacle the cover 19 is provided upon the under facethereof with a'member generally indicated at 21, which is arranged toproj ect inwardly into the compartment 11; the nicm'ber'21 is preferably in the form of a iniirrnr (see alsoliigs. 4 and and while servi n'g'to center the cover19 with respect to the receptacle 10 when thelatter, the mirror .21'f0rn1s an accessory in the use of the entire being noted'that the handle convenient manipulation or mirror 21 as desired.
' In order to close the open ends of the compartment 17 whichreceives the lipstick, the cover"l9 is provided at-its right-hand end, as viewed in'Figuresl, 2, 4: and 5, with two i and 23 shaped so as to be fitted andreceived within the ends of the compartment 17, so as to close the latter and hence to seal the-lipstick against exposure. The depending-lugs 22 amiss thus'not only close the compartment 17 but, in registering within the ends of theslot-or compartment important device, it
holding of the 17,they act to prevent rotary displacement ment of the cover placeinent'of the lid of the cover 19 where-"the central compartment'lliscircula'r, as is preferably the case in order-that it may conform to the standard shape and} size ofpowder puffs. 'Ifdesired, the lid or cover19 may beprovided with another meinber 24 on its under face and-at the left-hand end thereof, the member 2st being arranged to project into the co1npartrnent'12, thus effectively to prevent undesired displacel9 with respect to the receptacle 10. This latter feature of construc tion is of particular advantage where the parts are made of such materials as porcelain, china orglass,for example, which do not readilylend themselves to great accuracy of forming, pressing ormolding.
In the use of the receptacle, the removal I ofthe cover 19 not only makes the mirror 21 at once available, but also opens theends 0f the slot'or compartment 17, permitting the dipstick 18 to be readily and conveniently removed therefrom; this removal may take place by merely ,s'iiding the lipstick 18 out of the slot 17, or by grasping the lipstick between the thumb and forefinger of the hand at its now freely exposed ends. The remaining cosmetics and their applying devices, togtherwith the lipstick, may thereupon be *used as desired, it'being noted tliat the' reor cover 19 closes the open ends'of the slot 17 so that the assembled l0 isprovided witlr a cover it is desired to close permits the devicethen presents a solid and unbroken appearance. 'ln'Figures 6, 7 and 8 I have illustrated a possible modified form in which my invention may be embodied. Referring to Figure 7, it will be seen that the main body portion of the receptacle, indicated at 25, is provided with a bead26 eXtendingabout its lower peripheral edge. The receptacle is provided, s already hereinbefore described inconnection'with the otherfigures of tlie-tlrawin with a central compartment ll for the pow der and powder puff an end compartment 12 for therouge and puff therefor,-and con1- p artnient or slot '17 extending transversely of the receptacle the latter coinpartn'ient being shaped and proportioned 'to receive therein thelipst-icklSj The slot- 17' is open-ended preferably at both ends.
A. cover '27 providedwith a handle 28 and "shaped," as willbe clear fro-1n Figure "6,-to correspondwith-the shape ofthe receptacle 25, is provided --with a flange downwardly therefrom and throughout its entire periphery, the' fiange being shape'd and proportioned to-fit over the main body pertion of the receptacle 25 and-to register upon and with the bead'26 on the latter. A mirror 30 of any "desired shape, preferably of a shape coincidentiw-ith theshape of the cover 27 itself, issecured inany suitable manner to the under faceof'th'e cover 27.
The flange 29 of the lid 27 is'ef such'an extent in a dow nward'direction that it overlaps' the open ends of the compartment or slot"17,so that in assembled relation with respect to the-'receptacle25, the cover 27 closes not only the compartments 11 and'1 2, but 7 also the compartment l7,'and thus the'entire device may present an unbroken appearance, a feature which permits of carrying out any desired ornamentation per se-or ornamental shaping of the device. The flange 29-also holds the lid 27 against displacement, and upon" the removal of the -lid 27, the' flange 29 is made to uncover the open end or ends of r the compartment 17 v to permit the lipstick 18 to he slid out of its compartmentor to be picked up between the thumb and forefinger. In certain instances I fin'd it highlyadvantageous to make the part or p arts forming the compartment or slot 17 in the form of-an: insert, and sucha construction I prefer to employ particularly where the device ismade of a sheet material, such as sheet'metal', paper orpapier-mach, for enainp'le. This; preferred construction is'shown in the drawing, and it "will be seen that the compartment 17 is made up of a sheet-like member 31, the upperperf tion of-whichis'depressed'as at 32, and at its end portions is provided with supporting -flanges33 ancl-3 l of suflicient length-to reach through an d 29 extending sup i tended or desired position.
port the depressed portion 32in its 111- be seen that there has been pro- It will thus I invention a receptacle for cosvided in this metics andapplying devices therefor in which the several pensive removal manually when made of the objects hereinbefore noted and many thoroughly practical advantages are achieved The flange 29 of the cover 27of the form shown in Figure 7, and the depending lugs,22 23 of the form of my invention shown in Figure 2, permit the mirror to be set down with thehandle uppermost, and prevent contact of the mirror with the surface upon which the cover is thus set;
seen that the receptacle is ofv a, construction readily to rapid and inex-- y matter hereinbefore set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings, is-to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.v
