This invention.' relates to an alarm device' and the general object ot the invention isto provide a simple device of this kind which can be readily installed Without the use of special tools and Withoutv necessitating the" The invention consists oiithe novel parts and combination of parts to be described hereinaften' all oli which contribute to produce an efcient alarinapparatus.
A preferredembodiment oi the invention`r isdescribed` in the following .specilicatiomV While the broad scope otthe invention' is pointed out inthe appei'ided'claims.
In the drawings: Y Y Figure-lisa front elevation showing -aportion'of adoor and-a portion of the casem`e iit,.Y and illustrating` my alarm' apparatusapplied' to the same.
.Trigure 2 is a vievA similar to Figure l'lout4 illustrating one ofthelovver corners of afsash,
for use With such a sash.
Figure 3 'is an elevationshoivinga portion oi" the frame of' the alarindevice ory clock,k and illustratingfdetailsof the preferred con. struction of an4 actuatingl member-Which Il use to release the-alarm. Thisv view isv upon an enlarged scale.
Figure l is a vertical section 'takenr about on the line te-t, of Figurev 3. This vevv'isV upon an enlarged scale.
ln practicing this invention7 I' employ 'an alarm device Which 'rests upon the lloor- For this purpo'se'I may employ an alarm device of any desired construction provided with a movable-member or actuating member; the movement'o'f which releases the alarm. According to my invention, vlfconnect'tliis movable' member or actuating member with a" part which Will be moved if a personattempt-'s to move a partbarring entrance to a room, torrezrarnple,k if itis attempted to' open the door or open a sash which Will give access' tothe room. Q u Y u Inthe embodiment of the invention dis# closed, provide an alarm device 1 which; may be in the form of. an alarm vcloclrof any' common type. TheA alarm' clock illustratedt is of a type having aj substantially square casing 2. In its interior the-clock'is'provid'- ed with an alarm mechanism includin'ga bell hammer B'for striking' againstthe'side. of a bell* 4. This bell hammer hasV a' handle or arm 5- ivh'icli, :when released; Lis actuated' by `an alarm v spring and other parts not illustiated' but vwel known to constructors of alarm mechanisms. The setting off of the alarm is controlledv by means ofv a detent 6 infthe' form of a'flat bar, one end of Wliic'h is fastened atthe pointrandthe other end of 4iv'hich is bent laterally Atoform af'fi'ngerS Whichprojects lintothepath-'of the arm 5 Vof the hammer and normally-prevents the" hammer frombeingi actuated. At an intermediate point onits length,y this detentbar' 6 has associated Wit-Hit a" gear 9 which is? rotated'by the clock' train; the hub ofsaid gear being provided With'a collar 10 having a notch 11, see `Figurer 4; VV'henv'tlii's` notch 11 arrives at a certain pointfitperinits ashift ingtmovement'of the' collarlO'and tfi'egeai- Wheel 9 carryingwith it the outerI portion of the detent bar 6 to Which it is connected;A In" According toI my*1 invention, Ii provide'V means vforactiiating.the detent 6- if the door orv'sashnea'r the aflarin'is'opened. For this purpose I provide anactuating-member' 12 Which'is guided td'move downwardly and` upwardlythrouglraslot 13 in the upper Wall laof'thecasing'2. This actuating iri'e'mber"v is in the form vof aflat barpro'v'idetl ivithl means for guidingfiton the' clockfra'me 15.
For' this purposeg-theb'ellf may be provided vvithtivo longitudinal slots 16' Whiclirec'eive f guide screwsvl 17 secured in!` the'fiame.
' Near' theY lover end 'fof the' actuating inem# ber 12, it is provided with a'lat'eralof-se't: or cai'n'portin 18. This cam 'portion :fis dis@y posed slightly'` below l and 'near the "'inne'r side face ofthe deten'tbar 6; and thefbar 12 is so located that when it is pulled up, this 'cam' portion 18 Willl push the vdetentbai" G to one side and thereby release-*the a`rm`5v from theY detentvinger 8. It should be' understood; liowever, that the actiat'ingfmeinber' 12 is not attached'to tlfe detfntbar 6 but simply opereV ,ates' to slio'v'e`A it "to" one side; lthat isto say; o
it Shoves itto one side inthe same direction that the detent shoved by the regular clock mechanismwhen the alarm operates. Hence the presenceo'llv the actuating member12 does not in any way interfere with the regular user the door19 is opened, I provide means con nected with the door in such a way as to pull the a: tuating member. 12 upwardly. In the present instance, I'employ a` bracket 2O which maybedetachably'secured to the door knob 21m a vertical position, so that if this door knob `is rotated in either direction to open the door, thegarm ofthe bracket 2() will swing upwardly and raise the bar 12. In other words, one end of the bracket is utilizedto afctuate the alarm. lInthepresent instance, the bracket consists of vtwo ]aws.22 connected together at i a pivot point 23, and provided with a clamping screw 24 Vorclamping them together. A set screw 25may be providedior securing the'bracket iirmly to the shank ofthe knob.
The-end of the bracket 22 is attached by. a suitable connection 26 to the upperend of the slidefbar 12. F or this purpose, the up 3er end of i the Y slide bar; may beV provided with a small opening27. The connection 26 is pret erably in the form cfa light chain having a loop 28' at its vupper end'cooperating with an adjustable clamp 2,9 to enable the length of' the chain to be adjusted.
lVith this arrangement itfwillbe evident 'thatV the clock which is freely movable can be' set on the floor 30 but unattached tothe floor under the knob 'and connected to itzas inring when released, that isto say, it can not be stopped until it has run down'.
I prefer to construct thel actuating member 12 in such away that it can be shoved in to l/Vhen an. alarm clock is used formy purpose i stop the alarm. In other words, I provide Y baru12. is pulledupwardly, the spring Bla detent for holding the actuating member 12 in the -raised position to which it is moved by the pull on the chain 26. For this purpose, I provide the side of the bar'12 with a smallv leal2 spring` 34, whichcarries a smallpin'l at its end." ThisV pin projectsl through the upper slot 1G. vand inthe Aposition of thc bar shown in Figure 4l, Vthe end ot' this pin restsy aoainstthe side l'ace of the clock frame 15. IVhen' the hook 86 attaching the chain to thev moves the pin toward the right so that it rests upon the upper edge; 37'V of the-clock Jframe. In this way, the pin supports the bar in its elevated position. However, by' shoving down on the bar 12, it can be returned to its depressed position. AIn order to facilitate this movement, the frame 15 may be provided with a bevel face' 38 atv its upper edge 37. `This bevel race acts as a'cam on the adjacent Yend of. the pinB and 'slioves the pin toward the lei't. Of course, when the pin 35 is lholding the bar 12 elevated, the pin is projecting across the extreme upper edge of the Yclock.`V
irame, but the spring 34 is sulliciently flexible' to permit the pinto release itself when Vt-he bar 12is shoved downwardly. f, Y I l v In, constructing the alarm device it should,
of course, be constructed so thatthe weight of the alarm device will' maintain its casing upon the floor when the movable'member 12 is pulled upwardly. f
Itis understood that the embodiment of the invention describedlierein is only one .of the many embodiments this invention may take, and I do not wish to be limited inthe practice ofthe invention, nor in the claims, to the particular embodiment set forth.v
