To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALENTIN M. KLUGE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description. g This invention relates to the class of burglar-alarms in which an alarm-bell is mounted 011 a supporting-plate or frame adapted to be placed either in proximity to a door and to be actuated by the movement of the door from its closed position, or on the meeting-rail of the lower sash of a window and to be actuated by the movement of either the upper or the lower sash from its closed position. And the invention consists in an improved construction of the means for sup porting the burglar-alarm in its operative position, and of the means for continuing the action of the alarm after it has been set in motion, all as hereinafter described and illus trated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a burglar-alarm embodying my improvements and showing it in its operative position on a window; Fig. 2 shows said burglar-alarm placed in position to be operated by the movement of a door from its closed position; Fig. 3 is an enfront view of the alarm removed and parts of the casing broken away to show the mechanism of the alarm; Fig. 4 is a rear view of the alarm; Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the supporting and detaining devices of the actuating plunger of the alarm; and, Fig. 6 is a transverse section of one of the supporting-feet of the alarm taken on the line X-X- in Fig. 3.
Referring to the said drawings, adenotes the usual casing provided with a removable cover -a on which is supported the mechanism for ringing the bell b screwed onto a central revoluble arbor c in the well known manner. The said mech anism may be of any ordinary and well known construction, one of which is shown in Fig. 3 and comprises a main gear 1 mounted on the arbor -c which is rotated by the unwinding of a coiled spring l secured at its ends to the arbor and casing respectively. This gear meshes with a pin ion 2- secured to a suitably journaled shaft d to which is also fastened a gear with the bell l l l l l 3 meshing with pinion 4 secured to a shaft e, and to the shaft -e is fastened an escapement-wheel 5 which alternately engages pawls 66 formed on a lever 7- pivoted to the cover a and having attached to it a spring-armv8 carrying the bell-hammer 9. The said lever is provided above its pivot with a segmental slot 10- disposed concentric with the pivot, which slot is engaged by a lug -11- provided on a spring 12- attached to the casing a'. This lug is normally pressed against the upper edge of the slot 10 to force the upper pawl 6 of the lever into engagement with the escapement-wheel so as to lock the train of gears against the action of the aforesaid spring 1 To transmit motion from the arbor to the gear 1., incident to the unwinding of the spring l and at the same time allow the arbor to be rotated reversely and independently of the gear for the purpose of winding the said spring, a ratchet-wheel 13 is fastened to the arbor and engaged by a springpressed pawl 14 pivoted to the said gear. By downward pressure on the free end of the aforesaid spring 12-, the lug 11- is caused to bear on the lower edge of the slot 10in the lever 7, whereby the lever is freed to be oscillated by the escapementwheel 5 incident to the unwinding of the spring -1 and resultant rotation of the gears and pinions. The downward pressure on the spring *12* is exerted by a plunger -B connected to the spring and extending upwardly therefrom and disposed in in clined position to be actuated by a window or door as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The upper end portion of said plunger is pointed and slightly deflected so as to engage any one of a series of indentations in a plate 0 fasgened to the upper sash of a window or to the oor.
C represents the supporting-plate of the alarm. The central or main portion of said plate is flat and fastened to the back of the casing a. The lower end of said plate is bifurcated to form two pointed prongs or feet -D which engage indentations in a plate 0 fastened to the part to be guarded by the alarm. Said feet are made concavo-convex in cross-section as shown in Fig. 6 to impart the requisite stability to said feet. The opposite end of the said plate is formed with an upwardly extending sleeve -E- which embraces and supports the plunger B- and is united with the main portion of the plate C b a concavo-convex neck- F formed in the plate between the sleeve E and main portion of the plate, said neck serving to firmly sustain the sleeve in line with the plunger.
In order to allow the bell to ring after the plunger B has been relieved from the pressure applied thereto in the attempt to open the window or door, I provide the plunger with a transverse notch G in the portion which is embraced by the sleeve E as shown in Fig. 5 and provide the said sleeve with a transverse slot H at a short distance rearward from the notch G to allow the slot to register with the said notch when the plunger B is forced rearward or downward. taohed at one end to the main portion of the supporting-plate C and has its opposite end formed with a tongue J extending at a right angle from the main portion of the spring-plate and into the slot H of the sleeve -E. Said tongue also enters into the notch G of the plunger when forced rearward in the attempt of opening the window or door to which the burglar-alarm is applied. To the said spring-plate, adjacent to the tongue J, is attached a handle -L consisting preferably of a stem extending directly across the side of the sleeve -E- and provided with a head N for receiving upon it'the pressure of a persons thumb or finger when it is desired to force the tongue J out of the notch of the plunger so as to allow said plunger to be forced forward by the spring 12 of the al'armmechanism, and thus place the plunger in position for actuating the alarm preparatory to applying the alarm to a window or door to be guarded A spring-plate -I is atthereby. The head N- is of sufficient width to engage the sleeve E when the spring-plate I' is depressed as aforesaid.

What I claim as my invention is l. The combination, with the bell and its casing, of the actuating plunger provided with a transverse notch, the supportingplate formed with a sleeve embracing the plunger and provided with a transverse slot disposed at the rear of the aforesaid notch, and a spring plate attached at one end to the supporting-plate and formed at the opposite end with a tongue extending into the slot of the sleeve and braced by the edges of said slot.
2.v The combination, with the bell and its casing, of the actuatin plunger provided with a transverse notc ln, the supportingplate formed with a sleeve embracing the plunger and provided with a transverse slot at the rear of the aforesaid notch, a springplate attached at one end to the supportingplate and formed at the opposite end with a tongue extending into the slot of the sleeve, and a handle attached to the spring-plate and provided with a head adapted to engage the sleeve and thereby limit the movement of the spring-plate as set forth.
