This invention relates toa combined door bell and alarm mechanism and has particular relation to a mechanism in Which a common bell serves for both purposes.
In connection With mechanical door bell arrangments, it is desirable that the bell should not only serve to operate as a door bell upon actuation of a push button or the like but should also serve to sound a Warning if the door With Which it is associated is opened by an intruder. It is the broad object of the present invention to provide a device of this character. More specically it is an object of the invention to provide such a device in Which the mechanism ma be rendered inoperative to sound the bell upon manual manipulation of the push button but in Which case it Will remain operative to act as an alarm.
Other more specific objects relating to details of construction will be apparent from the following description read in conjunction With the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the bell unit.
A frame 2 supports through suitable hinges in the usual manner a door 4 to the outside of which is secured a push button casing 6 through which a plunger 8 is adapted to slide against the tension of a spring 10 when manually manipulated, this plunger being guided in its inner end through an opening in the door.

The chain 12 at its inner end is connected to partially in section Secured to the inner end of theV the pivoted rod 18 which carries at its outer end a hammer 20 arranged tocooperate With a bell22, the inner end of this rod being carried on a spindle provided With fpallets 24 cooperating With an escapement Wheel 26 55` which is arranged to be driven by a suitable spring clockwork mechanism as is usual in bells of this type.
To render the mechanism inoperative to A ring the bell, there is provided a detent 28 o0 carried by the spindle of a rotatable member 30 projecting outside of the casing 34 enclosing the clockwork mechanism. Preferably this mechanism, its cover 34 and the bell 22 y are secured to a suitable base 32, Which" may d be attached to the door frame. There is thus formed a unit Which is readily secured in proper position. f l' /Vhen it is desired that the mechanism should operate as `a door bell, the detent28 70,` islocated avvay from Contact With the escape- Vment Wheel 26 and the detent 16 is pivotally moved from engagement with the chain 12. Under these conditions Withthe door closed the spring 10 serves to urge plunger 8 out- 75 vvardly pulling the rod 18 to an extreme posi tion so ,that the escapement is unable to produce oscillatory motion thereof. Under these conditions inward movement of the plunger 8 serves to produce longitudinal movement ofthe chain 12, liberating therod 18 so that it receives an oscillatory motion from the escapement mechanism and rings the bell.
It Will be observed that When the parts are in this condition opening of the door would serve'to permit a longitudinal movement of the chain., freeing the rod 18. Accordingly, before the'door is opened under normal conditions, the detent 28 would be engaged with thel escapement Wheel to prevent the bell from ringing.
, At'times it is desirable that the door bell be prevented from operating but that the mechanism should serve as a burglar alarm. Tov elfect this result, the detent V16 is engaged with the chain by movement to the position illustrated in the figures. At the same time, of course, the detent 28 must be'disengaged from the esc-apement Wheel. It Will be seen Gij new that movement et the plunger 8 mwardly will not liberate the rod 18 but the chain will be held tight between the rod 1S and the spring detent 1G. On the other hand, if the door be opened, a longitudinal movement is imparted to the chain l2 by reason of the fact that the part of the chain engaging the dctent 16 moves toward the bell mechanism across the line on which the door is hinged to the frame. lt will be obvious, therefore, that there is provided a burglar alarm which will operate whether the mechanism is operative or inoperative as a door bell. Of course, the mechanism may be rendered inoperative for all purposes by the use of` the detent 28.
It will be obvious that numerous variations may be made from the preferred mechanism illustrated. For example, the chain 12 may be replaced vby `any type of i'lexible connection and the detent 16 may take various forms. The same is true of the bell mechanism which, if desired, may be located at a remote position, the flexible connection passing about suitable pulleys to conline it to a` proper path. Insteadof being connected directly to the hammer rod, the chain may be connected to any other portion of the mechanism which will permit it to control the sounding of the bell.
What l claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. A combined door bell aiidalarininechanism including a bell, a hammer, hammer actuating mechanism, `a manually. operable member, connections between the manually operable member and the hammer actuating mechanism whereby operation of the member causes operation ofthe actuating mechanism, said, connections being arranged whereby opening of a door in connection with which the mechanism is usedserves to cause opera'- tion of the actuating mechanism, and restraining, means for rendering the manually operable member` ineffective to cause operation of the actuating mechanism while the connections remain. operative uponv opening of. the door.
2. A combined door bell and alarm mechanismincluding a bell unit comprising a bell, a hammer, and hammer actuating mechanism adapted to be carried by a building, a manually operable member adapted to be carried by a door, connections between the member and hammer actuating mechanism arranged.

a hammer, and hammer actuating mechanism adapted to be carried by a building, a push button carried by a door, a flexible member arranged to be connected between the hammer actuating mechanism and the push button across the line upon which the door hinges whereby its longitudinal movementeffected by movement of the push button causes operation of the hammer actuating mechanism, and means for securing the flexible member to the door betweenthe push button and the line of hinging whereby the push button is rendered inoperative but the actuating mechanism is operated upon opening of the door.
