IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,133, dated October 26, 1875; application filed July 31, 1875.

To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that we, CLINTON M. BALL and JOHN 0. BALL, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new Improvement in Shirts, of which the following is a specification:

This invention consists of the bosom of a shirt attached to the shirt-body by the upper end only, so as to be otherwise entirely free therefrom, by which it is less liable to fold and wrinkle while in wear, and it is capable of being ironedwithout being impressed with the form of the shirt-body under it, for it can be turned up at the top and be laid on the ironing-board independent of the body. It may be open or closed at the front, and it allows of making the opening of the shirt body either at the front or back, as may be preferred.

The mode of attachment consists of a col.- lar-band to the bosom sewed onto the neck of the shirt from the top of the shoulder around the back, and the upper end of the bosom sewed to the body in the seam, by which the shirt front and the yoke are attached, leaving the vest wholly unattached at the neck and the body, but tabs to button temporarily to the front at the sides of the bosom may be em ployed, if necessary, in case the vest is ver open.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a shirt having the bosom attached according to our plan. Fig. 2 is also'a front elevation, but with the bosom turned up, as for being placed on the ironing-board independently of the front.

and by its collar D being sewed around the back of the neckfrom the seam 6, but being unattached around the front from said seam, so that the bosom is free to beturned up, as in Fig. 2, and be laid on an ironing-board independently of the body. E represents tabs that may be attached to the edges of the bosoms to button temporarily onto the body, if desired.

It will be seen in Fig. 2 that the shirt may be open at the front or back, as may be desired. Besides setting better in wear, this plan allows of having the shirt open at back or front, and of ironing the bosom independently of the body, which are advantages not attainable in the case of bosom attached all around the neck and part of the way down the front. The bosom might be unattached at the seam G, if preferred, as the effect would be about the same, though, perhaps, not quite as good in all cases.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A shirt, having neck-band attached to body only at back of neck-opening, and the bosom attached at upper edge only to front of neckband and shirt-body, as and for the purpose specified.
