The line-space movement of the line-space lever may be adjusted to ei'lfect multiples of j a single linespace unit of movement for the plat-en by means of the line-space adjusting mechanism, which, as a unit, is designatedj23, see Figure 7. This mechanism includes three members designated 24, 25, and 29, all of which Vmay be stamped from sheet-metal and united to form a substantially V-shaped unit. These members taken separately include a stop-arm 24 provided with a hooked 'end 26, and a. hub portion 27.V The member 25 is made of spring steel, and is provided with a Yhub port-ion 28, to be united with the hub 27' by means of rivet-s. The line-space lever 5 may now be actuated to effect a vline-space movement, the initial rearward movement ot' the line-space pawl 8 causing the pin 19 on the line-space pawl to ride ott of the stud 22, and by the action oi the spring 27 the tooth 15 engages a tooth in the line-sp`ace wheel 16.
Further actuation of the line-space pawl 8 will eiiect a single or double line-space movement of the platen, according to the adjustment of the stop-arm 2e and which arm arrests the movement of said line-space pawl by engaging the pin 19, as illustrated in dotand-dash linesV in Figure 4." Thus by varying the position of the stop-arm 24; relatively to the pin 19, by the plugging-in action oi' the inger-button 30, the range et movement of the line-space pawl 8 is'predetermined for either a single or a double line-spacing distance. The platen-detent-release mechanism includes a detent-lever designated 36, stamped 'from sheet-metal, and formed into a bellcrank with arms 37and 38, offset from `each other and connected vsubstantially at the pivotal point, by a web 39 which is substantially U-shaped, as viewed from the rear in Figure 5. The Vlever is pivotally supported by a screw 4.0, with the upstanding arm 38 aligned' with the inner wall of the end iframe, and with the arm 37 carrying` at its lower end a detent or roll L11 to co-operate with the teeth et the line-space wheel 1G. A coil-spring l2, having its ends-connected to a roll-supporting stud A3 and tev a stud lll secured to the end frame 3, acts tourgc the detent or roll @t1 into engagement with the line-space wheel, as'indicated in Figure 3. A detent-release leve-r designatedfl is pivotally supported tor rocking movement on a shouldered stud 4G. A stud 4T, carried at the upj er end of the lever 1-5, protrudes through a slot- 48 in the end frame 3, and'is provided with aY finger-knob 49. It will be particularly noted that the high part of the cam face 50,
vwhen in the detent-releasing position of Figthe dead-center or interlocking position, the
action of the spring 42in restoring the detent-roll 41, converts the rounded end of thel arm 38 into a cam to restore said detent-release lever to normal or inoperative position, the slot 48 in the platen-frame co-acting with the shank portion of the finger-knob 49, to limit movement of saidA lever to both normal and actuated positions. The inertia of the heavy platen tends to overthrow its line-r spaced position at the end of a line-spacing operation, and, while the spring-detentroll will act to justifythe position of the platen, it is an advantage to positively lockV some operating part, to prevent an independent movement of the platen. As already described, the stop-arm 24 has formed thereon a hook 26, and when thel line-space pawl 8 is shifted to the dot-and-dash position ot Figure 4, the stud V19 is arrested by the arm 24, and said studA has also passed under thev hook 26, and any tendency of a tooth of the ratchet-wheel 16 to cam by the tooth 15 of the pawl will be checked by said hooi; holding the tooth 15 locked .between adf joining teeth of the ratchet-wheel, and will effectively prevent an independent rotation of the `platen in either directionat the end of a line-spacing movement.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a' revoluble platen, of a line-space ratchet-Wheel, a line-space pawl comprising a tooth and a laterally proj ectingl pin, means to cooperate with said pin to cam said paWl out ot co-operative relation with said ratchetwheel When moved to return posit-ion, and means adjustable to vary the range ot' the forward movement ot said pawl, including a stop-arm having a hooked end to both intercept and lock the pin, to prevent the displacement of the pawl by the ratchet-wheel.

In a typewriting machine, the combi-r nation with a platen revoluble upon a platenaXle, of a line-space ratchet-Wheel, a linespace paWl having a tooth to engage said ratchet-Wheel, a pin projecting laterally from said paivl, and a stop-arm pivotally mounted upon the platen-axle to intercept the movement of said pin to stop said pawl at the end of a line-spacing movement, said stop-arm having means to interlock with said pin to prevent displacement of the pawl by the inertia ot the platen.

A mechanism adjustable to control the line-space movement of a line-space pawl by varying its entire range of movement in accordance with vthe desired number Ofilinespace 'movements of the platen, comprising, in combination, three members united to form substantially a V, one of said members consisting of a hooked stop-arm having a hub by means of which the V is pivotally supported on the platen-axle of av typewriting machine, the second member consisting of a strip of spring steel having a hub at which point said strip and stop-arm are united, and
a nger-button having a shank, and the third member consisting of? a strip united to said second-named strip by said shan r and having a locking pin projecting laterally therefrom.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen having an axle, of an end frame for said platen, a line-space ratchet-wheel, a line-space pawl to engage said ratchet-wheel to effect line-space movement thereof, a-nd mechanism adjustable to control the line-space movement of said linespace pawl, by varying its entire range of movement in accordance with the number of line-space movements of the platen, comprising a stop-arm pivotally supported on said platen axle, to limit movement of said pawl, a laterally yielding arm connected to said stop-arm and having va linger-button secured thereto, a slot in said end frame engageable by the sha-nk of said button, a strip united to said yielding arm by said shank and having a pin projecting laterally therefrom, and apertures in said end frame engageableby said pin to lock said stop-arm in adjusted position, said second-named arm yielding laterally by pressure on said linger-button to disengage said pin from an aperture to unlock said stop-arm and permit adjustment thereof. f v

Ina typewriting machine, the combination with a platen mounted in a carriageframe, a line-space ratchet-wheel revoluble upon the platen-axle, and a line-space pawl engageable'with said wheel, of a line-space lever pivoted below the platen-axle on an axis transverse to the platen and having a lingerpiece extending upward from the pivot to a point substantially flush with the top of the carriage-frame, and connections between said lever and said pawl to actuate the latter upon the sweep of the lever in a carriage-return direction.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen mounted within a carriage-frame, of a line-space ratchetwheel secured to said platen, a pawl for actuating said wheel, a bell-crank line-space lever pivoted on a horizontal axis transverse to the aXis o' said platen and below the bottom of the platen, one arm of said lever serving asa finger-piece and extending to a point approximately'on a level with the top of the carriage-frame, and connections between said pawl and the other arm of said line-space lever to impart line-space rotation to said ratchet-wheel upon movement of said lingerpiece in a carriage-return direction.
