RIBBON-SHIFTING MEANS FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
LISSIS.
Application filed July 12: 1915.
lle it known that l` Zanuox (i. Snoiais. :l eitixen oll the l`nited States. residingr at 'il inine'ton. ia the Stale otI Delaware. have invented rertain new and useful Improvements in llibhonvShittinj." Means i'or 'l` vpe ll'rilers: and l do herebv deelal'e the following' to be a full. rlear. and exaet description ot'ithe invention. ,sueh as will enable others lskilled in the art to whieh it appertains to niake and use the saine.
rThe present invention relates to an iniproved meehanisin t'or shifting a twovcolored ribbon as used on visible typewriters. and the prineipal ohieet otI the invention is the pro\i.\ion of a siinple and thoroughly `strong and reliable iiieehanisni adapted to prodin-ing at will :inv one ot. three positions ol4 the ribbon when :in v ke v lever is oper ated, These positions inelude one tor eaeh ot' two eolors t usnall)v red and blue or blaekl and one position ot' rest. whieh is assumed when the niaehine is used l'or makingY steneils i'or niultigrraph work'.
The invention is illustrated in a preferred forni in the aeeonipanving drawings. whereinw Figure Vl is a lside elevation of the essential featuresy in their relation to the franv and platen` Fig. Q is a front elevation ot the ribbon t'ork and a part ot the platen and ribbon` Vig'. Il is a detail view of the means l'or ,steadviiie the shittingr handle in its arious positions'. and Fil. l is an enlarged elevation olu eertain details hereinafter de- St'llllttl.
The framework is shown at lll and the po;-ition oi' the platen is indieated at l1.
.\t 1;) is shown on:- otr tlu` usual ke'v levers. and the uniwrsal bar is'. shown at I3A This im is supported upon arins ll whieh ronneet it with a revoluble shaft l5. and an eX- tensior aria lV transmits motion to the rib b-x-u 'liilt :intl -paeinf meehanisni.
t l? invlirated the usual eseapement wheel eontrolied b v the eseapenient 19 in a well known inanuer. This esealwinentis earrird upon a bell erank lever lll pivotallv supported at it). and eonneeted b v bars 2l and to the extension arln lt'. The lever lil rarries an extension 23E havin;Y a slot in whieh there plais a pin 2l eonneeting' .said extension with an upright. ronneetingr rod E25. At the upper end otthe rod 27 is a pin Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1916.
Serial No. 39,475
:Ztl which enters a properl)v curved slot 27 in the rear end of a lever S pivotallv supported at ffl. This lever has a fork 3() at; is iorward end engaging' a pin il on the ribbon shittingr fork 3;). through which the 'rihhon lil passes in the usual manner. This t'ork is niounted so as to be capable ot' slidin;r up and down in the usual way for shifting the ribbon.
As elearl \v shown in Fig. l the slot in the lever 2S has a downward recess 3l midway between itsl ends. and so placed that. when the rod .5 and pin iti are situated as shown, the)Y niav niove downward without produc ingr :in v lnotion in the lever 2S and the attaehed shitting` i'ork.
lt is elear that. it the rod Q5 be shifted to bring the pin :2G near the rearward end ot` the slot 2T the upper portion ot the ribbon will he brought to the printingr level: while. it' the rod be shifted to its opposite extreme position. the lower portion of the ribbon will beeoine operative. ll. however. the rod is lett in the middle position shown in the drawing. it will not atleet the ribbon. and the t'vpes will strike over the ribbon. as is desirable where stencils are bein;r struck. The preferred means wliieh l einplo)Y for controlliimy the position of the rod "25 for these different purposes comprises a bell erank lever pivotallv suspended 'from a lug 36 on the traine ofthe niaehine and havingr a forked end 3T which engages the rod Q5 in the manner shown in Fils. l 'id 4. To the short horizontal :irin ot' the lefer 35 is pivotallv eonneeted a rod 3Q whose lower end is siinilarlv eonneeted with the swiiiging arm 39. pivotallv7 supported at lit). A rod 4l affords a suitable oonneetion between the arm 39 and the lower end ot a bell Crank level' 4Q. pivoled at lilK and provided ,sits horizontal arn'i with :i finger piree er' laziale 4l. proieetinn forward from the inarhine.
As shown in Fig. Il. the lever 4i is pro vided with a projet-tion or beak adapted to engage one ot the notehes in the 'tare of the securing plate l5. whieh plate is pivoted at 46. is provided with a eurved finger piece 47. and is norinalhv pressed against the lever 42 b v the spring' 4S. to secure it`in that one oi the three positions desired.
lt is clear from the above description that the desired position. of the ribbon can be determined at any time by simply placing nectlons between the handle 4l so that the beak on the lever 42 engages one or the other of the notches in the securing plate,
Various changes can be made in this construction without departing from the scope of this invention, and I do not limit myself to the details herein shown and described.
What I claim is` 1. In a ribbon shifting means for typewriters, a ribbon fork, a pivoted level' engaging said fork at one end and having a slot near its opposite end, a connecting rod operatively connected with the escapement control and having a pin enteringr said slot, a bell crank leve." having a forked arm straddling said rod, a handle and operative consaid handle and forked bell-crank lever adapted to move the latter to swing the shifting rod so as to move its pin into diiferent positions in said slot, substantially as described.
2. In a ribbon shifting means for typewriters, a ribbon fork, a pivoted lever engaging said fork at one end and having a slot near its opposite end, a connecting rod operatively connected with the escapement control and having a pin entering said slot, a bell-crank lever having a forked arm straddling said rot, a swinging arm at the base of the machine, a rod connecting said bell-crank lever with said swinging arm, a second bell-crank lever having a handle, and
a mechanical connection between said second bell-crank lever and said swinging arm, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I ax my signature.
ZALMUN G. SHOLES.
