HEINRICH E. E. BAESELER, OF DRESDEN, GERMANY, .ASSIGNOR T0 THE FIRM: AKTEN- GESELLSCHAFT VORM. SEIDEL &, NAUMANN, OIF DRESDEN, GERMANY.
TYPEWRITER-ACCENTKEY MECHANISIVI.
Application led May 3, 1922.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HEINRICH FRANZ EDMUND BAnsnLnR, citizen of the German Empire, and resident of Dresden, Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Typewriter-Accent-Key Mechanism7 of which the following is a specification.
The invention refers to a device in typewriters for writing accents on letters as is needed for instance with the French language. The invention has for its object to provide improved means for this purpose as regards a cheaper manufacture as well as a more reliable function and it furthermore has the advantage that it renders it easy to change anyone of the normal keys into one bearing;r an accent instead of a letter.
The invention consists in using thoroughly separate members, which in no way interit'ere or coincide with the members actuated by the normal keys, for directly locking the ratchetwheel when an accent key is touched. lVith a device of this kind the very beginning of the movement of the accent key can bc utilized for effecting the locking of the ratchet wheel thus simply rendering the normal movements of those members inefficient which otherwise cause the carriage to move on and which thus need not in any way be modiiied. Heretoiore this was unavoidable. For either the locking of the ratchet-wheel was effected by members which complicated the entire lever-mechanism or it was done in a way which caused the necessity of altering the actuation ot the inkribbon. or in a way that the carriage after being locked was only freed again by the 'following touch of another key and this one had to be eifected with greater power in order to accomplish that.
ln the dra-wings are shown by way of example for a machine with a universal bar those parts which serve for the object of the invention. ln Fig. 1 the parts are shown in the position oi inoperativeness, in Fig. 2 'in the position when the ratchet-wheel is locked and the accent key just touching the uni- Serial No. 558,217.
versal bar7 the latter however still in rest, and in Fig. 3 in the position where the accent key touches the paper roller and consequently the ink-ribbon is lifted and the ratchet-wheel locked.
The key-lever 2 has its pivo-t at 7 and transmits its movement in a known manner by way of the intermediary lever 8 onto the type bar 4, which swings round the pivot 9. The type bar 4 is provided with a small projection 8 which, when the type bar approaches the end oi' its movement towards printing position is adapted to strike the universal bar. Caused by the horizontal movement of the universal bar, the fork (6), carrying` the ink-ribbon, is raised by means oit the bell crank lever 10, which has its pivot at 11, and of the rocking lever 12 which swings round pivot 13. @n the other hand, by means of the rod 14 the ratchetlatch 15 is raised out of contact with the ratchet-wheel7 thereby setting the carriage free for a latching movement. The ratchetwheel 19 is subject to the influence of the spring` which draws the carriage and thereby tends to turn in the direction of the arrow.
rl`he levers 16 are only provided for keys carrying an accent-character and swing round the pivot 17. The latch 1 swings round the pivot-18 and is driven through the key (2) by way oi' levers 16/20.
The way of operatingis as follows: As soon as an accent-key is being touched, latch l immediately engages the ratchet-wheel, and prevents the ratchet-wheel from turning, when after touching` the paper roller projection 3 of type bar 4 pushes against the universal rail 5, and this one transfers this movement by way of rods 1.0/14 onto latch 15 which would thus release the ratchetN wheel for a latching movement.
I claim:
The combination witlra typewritei` or similar writing machine having' a moving platen7 a pawl and ratchet wheel mechanism for controlling the movement of said platen type bars, a key for each type bar and means actuated by said type bars for actuating said pawl nleclmnslnj of a pvoted lever projectlng beneath said key and adapted to be :1ctuuted When said key is depressed, said lever articulated with a pvoted latch adapted to rnrnedartelT engage said ratchet Wheel when said key is depressed and prevent the normal actuation of said ratchet by said pawl, said latch and lever constructed and arranged to cause said latch to move ont of 10 engagement With said. ratchet Wheel when said key s released.
Signed at Dresden7 Saxony, Gernmny ths 28th day of March, D. 1922.
