R. E. KENNEDY DIVISION GUARD FOR BOWLING ALLEYS Filed Oct. 15, 192'? 5 2 1 2 5 2 Patented Nov. 6, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT E. KENNEDY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE BRUNSWICK-BALKE- COLLEND ER COMIANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION 01? DELAWARE.
DIVISION GUARD BOWLING ALLEYS.
Application filed October 15, 1927. Serial No. 226,489.
My invention relates to bowling alleys, and more partlcularly for dlvision guards therefor.
-' As usually constructed, bowling alleys are tion in the path of the sanding machines frequently used to smooth the surfaces of bowling alleys, and hence frequently has to be repaired. I
An object of'my invention is to remedy this condition by providing a terminal member or guard for the division just described which will be of resistant material such as metal and so constructed as not to be injured by a sanding machine.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds.
Referring to the drav'vings forming a part of this specification, f
Fig. 1 represents a plan view of the ends of a series of alleys in which division guards constructed in accordance with my invention are embodied.
Fig. 2 is a similar view on an enlarged scale of one of the guards shown in Fig. 1 with the parts of an alley which are adjacent thereto.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and r Fig. 4c is as sectional view taken on line HofFigQ;
According to my invention, the bowling alleys 1 are laid out in parallel relation in the usual way, with gutters 2 between them for disposing of balls which run off the alley.
Between two adjacent gutters'is disposed a division 8, which comprises side boards at and a top piece 5. Behind the alley beds and in the same plane therewith is the floor 5.
The divisions each terminate at their forward ends, that is, the ends adjacent the players position, in a guard 6 made of wear resisting material, and preferably of cast iron or similar metal. At its point of connection with the division, it will be noted that the guard is of substantially the same cross section as the division, having sides 7 joined by a top portion 8, but it slopes rapidly to a rear portion 9 which is substantially on a level with the adjacent floor. It may be secured to the side boards 4 of the division by suitable means such as screws 10.
It will thus be seen'that when a sanding or floor surfacing machine is used on an alley embodying my invention, no wooden corner will be presented to the machine which can be easily chipped and marred. If the machine is run from the floor down to the division, it will first encounter the guard, riding easily up the sloping portion thereof, without injury to division, the guard, or the machine.
Vhile I have disclosed a preferred form of my invention, it will be understood that changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
That I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2 I 1. In combination with a bowling alley, a gutter, a division running parallel to said gutter, and a terminal member at the forward end of said division composed of more resistant material than said division and constituting a protecting guard.
2. In combination with abowling alley, a gutter, a division running parallel to said gutter, and a metallic terminal member for the forward end. of said division constituting a guard therefor.
3. The combination of an alleybed, a gutter, a division extending parallel to said gutter and having side boards and'a top piece, and a metallic guard having a cross section in its rearward portion similar to that of the division and a downwardly and forwardly sloping top portion terminating in a fiat forward portion in the plane of said alley bed.
ROBERT E. KENNEDY.
