Description

UNITED STATES WESLEY H. STROUP, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BlLLlARD-TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,985, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WESLEY H. STROUP, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Billiard-Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms-a portion of this specification.
In the accompanying drawing, a indicates the cloth-covered face of a billiard-table; b, the cushion-rail of said table; 0, the cushion of the same; and d, a sheet-metal covering for the exposed upper and outer surface of said rail. The upper surfaces of cushions and cushion-rails of billiardtables are necessarily on a line with each other; the former is covered with cloth, and the latter has heretofore usually had a veneered surface of wood, and consequently the angular inner edge of said veneering is brought into direct contact with the cloth covering of the cushion c.
The cues of the players being brought into frictional and occasionally into sharp concussive contact with the upper surfaces of the cushion-rails, those surfaces, when the tables are much used, soon become scratched and defaced, and after a time the veneering will give way and become detached from the rails, and when that occurs the cues will necessarily be brought into direct frictional contact with the cloth covering of the cushions, which action will speedily destroy said covering, detach the same from the cushions, and thereby render the tables unfit for use. To prevent such injury to the billiard-tables that are supplied with wooden cushion-rails of the usual con struction is the object of this invention; and this I accomplish by combining a sheet-metal casing, d, with the upper surface and portions of the sides of the cushion-rail b of a billiardtable, of such a thickness, and bearing such a relation to the upper surface of the cushion c of said table, as to form a combination of said cushion, cushion-rail, and sheet-metal casing, of such a character as will afford the desired protection to the exposed upper surfaces of said cushion and cushion-rail and cause the frictional action upon themetallic surface of the latter to keep it at all times brightly polished. The metallic casing 61 is smoothly and firmly combined with the exposed upper and ,outer surfaces of the cushion-rail b by bending the edges of said plate around the sides of the cushion-rail, or into recesses in the sides of the same, substantially as shown; and thereby the said metallic casin g is caused to present a smooth surface to the cloth-covering of the cushion c, and also a smooth and a durable surface to the exposed upper and outer sides of the cushion-rail.
I claim as my invention The combination with each other of the cushion c, the wooden cushion-rail b, and the sheetmetal casing d, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that the aforegoin g is a full and ,clear specification of my improvement in billiard-tables, I hereunto subscribe my name this 21st day of March, 1872.
