2 Claims. (Cl; 105-237) This invention relates generally to locomotive wall of the stoker trough 5 and join the walls of tenders equipped with stoker troughs and more the water spaces 6, 6. particularly to a coal slide construction there- Instead of providing a single continuous coal for, and it is an object of my invention to provide opening as in the prior art, I provide a series of 5 an improved combination of structural shapes coal openings I0, Figs. 2 and 3, formed in the 6 and plates so formed, arranged and interrelated coal space floor 9 and separated by narrow transthat the same may be effectively assembled and verse plate strips II, Fig. 4. Coal is fed by gravsecured together to form an efficient and rugged ity successively through said openings whichare construction that is functionally adapted to reopened one at a time by means ofv usual movlo duce the vibration and stresses imposed upon the able sectional slides I 2 supported by and between 10 usual narrow side floor strips adjacent the coal guides I3 and retaining plates l4, Fig. 3. For opening leading to the stoker trough, thereby many years the prior art single opening has had avoiding leaks at the juncture between the floor the serious objection of causing the juncture of sheet and the walls forming water containing the floor plate and tank walls to be inherently portions of the tender tank. This application is weak, but no suitable arrangement has been 15 a division of my application Serial No. 65,992, heretofore suggested to reenforce the same befiled February 27, 1936, which has matured into cause of obstructing or of retarding flow of coal U. S. Patent No. 2,159,738, granted May 23, 1939. to the openings or of making it difficult to shovel Other objects and advantages will be more coal from the coal space floor 9 incase the fireapparent to those skilled, in the art from the man is required to supplement the action of the 2 following description of the accompanying draw-. stoker by touching up the fire. To overcome the ings in which: above objections I propose to use transverse plate Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a tenstrips I I connected to floor plates 9, preferably der embodying my improved construction and as an integral part thereof cut in the same plane.
arrangement, taken substantially on the line thereby providing the several openings I0. 2
I-I of Fig. 2; These transverse strips carry direct tension Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken substanforces to avoid spreading of the side walls and tially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; then in order to vertically protect these strips as Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the front end of well as to permit a hand shovel to pass thereover,
the tender and underframe, the front of the I propose braces I5 having any suitable curved or 30 tender being at the right end of Figs. 1 and 2 and angular upper surface herein broadly referred to parts of the coal space floor and slides being as inverted V-shaped' members specifically angle shown in section; irons disposed over each strip of floor plate left Fig. 4 is a longitudinal'vertical section of my between the openings III; The form of these improved coal slide guide stiffener taken on lines members may, of course, vary, but the principal 35 4-4 of Figs; '2 and 3; I feature thereof is to vertically protect the strips Fig. 5 is a perspective looking down on the II and to have a shape that allows a hand shovel stiffener of Fig. 4. I to readily pass over the openings. The ends of In the particular embodiment of the invention, the inverted angle irons are flattened as at l6 such as is disclosed herein merely for the purand preferably welded to the floor plate I0 so as 40 40 pose of illustrating one specific form among posto overlie the strips between the openings. v
sible others that the invention might take in The foregoing arrangement has the advan-' practice, I have shown in Fig. l a tender (withtage that the strips II minimize spreading and out its trucks) having an underframe generally resist vibrations and abnormal stresses which" indicated at I carrying a tank generally indicreate serious leakage problems while the invert 45 cated at 2. The details of construction of the ed V-shaped upper surfaces of the members I5 underframe and tank do not specifically enter give maximum and complete protection to the into the invention of this application, and hence strips I I and insure minimum obstruction to the it will sufiice to briefly point out that as shown flow of coal through the openings Ill as well as to 1 in said parent application the tank extends along permit the edge of a shovel to pass readily there- 0 each side of the center sill 3 and forwardly as at over. It has been found in actual practice that 4 beneath a stoker trough'S' and along each side these functions and results are effectively obthereof as shown in Fig. 2 at B. The coal space I tained with minimum cost and complications to-' hasa usual inclined rear wall 8 and usual nargether with maximum compactness, all of which row side coal floor strips 9 which form the upper has eliminated leaks at the juncture between the fioor sheet and the walls forming the water containing portions of the tank. T0 repair such' leaks in the past has increased maintenance costs as well as requiring the tender to be withdrawn from service. i
From the foregoing disclosure, it is seen that I have provided a combination whose component elements are so formed and structurally and functionally interrelated that their cooperative action efiects a compact and sturdy structure.
It will of course be understood that various changes in details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made by those skilled in the art Without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A tender comprising, in combination, means forming a longitudinal coal space provided with coal floor with openings therein, means forming conveyor chamber bounded on the top by so. coal fioor, fiat floor strips extending transversely of said openings, sectional slides for said openings, means disposed adjacent to the edges of said openings beneath said strips to provide guideways for said sectional slides which slidably extend beneath and in substantially close proximity to said strips, and transversely disposed inverted members of substantially V-shape in cross-section secured to the top of said floor and overlying said strips whereby coal may be substantially vertically guided by said inverted transverse members from said coal space through said openings and into said conveyor chamber or coal may be removed manually from said coal
