, Application filed Rovember 17, 1926. Serial No. 148,928.
My invention relates to certain improve ments in spirit levels and plumbs of the type having either a single view-openlng for a level or plumb-tube, or having a series of openings for the said tubes.-
The object of my 'inventionisto make a comparatively light level of metal, preferably aluminum alloy, and to so design the parts that they can be readily assembled, and when assembled the same will be rigid and the edges will betrue.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view of my improved level and plumb; v
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 2-2, of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4r4, Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a detached perspective: view of, v
' 1s a'plumb-tube. The openings may be glazed parts of the level;
Fig. 6 is a detached sectional view of the level tube holder; and
Fig. 7 is a plan View of the same.
The frame 10 of the levelis made of bars of extruded metal, preferably aluminum alloy. The bars are T-shaped in cross-section as shown in Fi 5. The end bars 11' are secured to the side bars 12 by screws or other fastenings.
At each side of the level are metal plates 13, preferably of aluminum alloy. These plates are thin and wide. The plates'are secured to the T'flanges of the bars 11 and 12 that make up the frame. In the present instance,bolts 14 are used as shown in Fig. 3, but other fastening means may be used if desired.
In order to provide room for the levelglass holders, washers 15, preferably of metal are located between the plates and the vide sight openings through which the leveltubes are exposed.
. 'The'spirit tubes 17are made as shown in Figs 1 and 6. Their ends, are closed and. p
"bars being T=shaped in cross-sectionmea'ns for securin the end bars to the side bjtiifs;
are embedded in] laster of Paris 18 located in cavities 19in t eholders 20. These holders. are of a thickness tofit between the two plates 13'13 and have narrow extensions 21 which rest against the bars 12-.12 and are secured to said bars by screws 24. Circular frames 22 are located on each side i of the level, and thr0ugh-bolts23 extend through the frames and plates and through the tube-holders, firmly securingthe several parts together.
This construction makes .50 a very light and substantial. metallic level and plumb, and i when made of aluminum the frame can be the natural color, while the side plates can be treated to imitate walnut, mahogany, or
any woods, making a very attractive article of manufacture. I
The level can be made with a single open ing' for either a level-tube or a plumbtube,
two level-tubes, while in eachendopening if desired.v
In the claims, the term level is used or it can be made with two or more openlugs; In the present instance there are three openings. In the central opening thereare to include either a level or a plumb, or a combined level and plumb.
I claim:- i
1. The combination in a level, of a framemacle of T-shaped bars; a body portion con sisting'of two plates spaced apart;m'eans for securing the plates to the T-web of the bars, the heads" of the T-sha ed bars extending laterally beyond the p ates, each of said plates having an opening; and a spirit tube located in the space between the plates opposite the openings.
2. The combination in alevel, of a frame madeof T-shaped bars secured together; two thin plates set in back of the flanges ofthe frame; means for securing said plates to the T-web of the frame; a holder located between the plates and between the T-webs of the frame, said holder having extensions at each end; means for securlng the exten sions to the T-web of the frame; and a spirit tube in said holder, the plates having openings opposite the spirit tube; V
3. The combination in a level, of a fram consisting of side bars and end bars, the
two thin p ates located on each side the r T-web of the bars and fitting in the space between the flanges of said bars; transverse bolts securing the plates to the T-web of the bars; spirit tube holders located in the 5 space between the plates said holders having extensions resting against the T-web of the frame and having an open centre;
spirit. tubes extending across the openings, the plates having openings in alignment with the openings in the holders; frames sur' rounding the openings; and bolts securing the several parts together.
