Be it known that 1, ALPHoNsUs FINN, a citizenof the United States, residing in the borough of Bronx, city and State of New York,l have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Vindows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof. l
This invention relates to the` construction of window frames formed of sheet metal and is particularly concerned with the construc-v tion at the corners, where the jambs, or ,-vertical members, and the head or lintel and sill, or horizontal members, meet. The objects of the invention are to reduce the cost of manufacture, to attain greater strength at the points of union of the vertical members and the horizontal members, andto improve the appearance. In accordance with the inf vention one of the members is formed at its end with tongues which are made to interlock with the adjacent portions of the other member, as by being bent over upon the edge of the other member or passed throughslots in the other member, or in both ways, a strong union of the twov members being secured in this manner without the use of vrivets and at greater reduced expense in labor. The effect, in appearance, of a mitered joint is secured by forming in the face of one member a diagonal slot and passing through it a broad tongue formed at the end of the corresponding face of the other member. The frame is stiffened, at the corner, by a brace which is so constructed as to form also a housing or support for the sash pulleys. When the members a and e are assembled by passing tongue 0; through slot e the tab g3 will extend upward, to the right in Figure 14, above the upper edge of member e, on the outside of the'outer end portion of member e and the relatively short tab h3 will lie against the inner face of this tab g?. The relatively short tabs it and 71,2 on the end of tongue a will lie against the inner faces of tabs e2 on the upper edge of member e. The lower or base portion of tongue a will be on the outside and the upper or terminal portion will be on the inside, of the member e.
The members a and e being thus assembled, the end of tab g3 is folded over onto tab 7b3 and the ends of tabs e2 are folded over onto tabs z. and 7b2. Tabs g3 and 71.3 are then folded inward on the line ofthe upper edge of member e and are compressed or smashed against the inner face of the end of member e thus interlocking the tabs together as is done in double seaming. Tabs e2 enclosing tabs it and 71.2 are then folded inward in the same way and are compressed or smashed against the inner face of the end portion of tongue a. By this double seaming together of the tabs the end portions of members t and e are so locked together that there can be no movement of one on the other and, at the same time the end portion of the tongue a" is held so closely against the member e that no moisture can enter between them.- If desired the end portions of the members a and e may be secured together by spot welding.
The effect to the-eye, of the construction described is that of a mitre joint as shown in Figure 14.
The back wall a? of the frame member a may also be formed, if desired, with a tab a3 which may be utilized in securing the top or cover, not shown, of the head or lintel e.
The opposite side a4 of the frame member at is also carried above the finished top line of the frame member e to form a tab or tabs a5 which, in like manner as previously described, and as shown in the right hand in Figures 7, S and 9, are each folded over upon a relatively shorttongue c5, extended above theupper finish line of the member e so as to enclose it, and, with the relatively short tab thus enclosed, is again bent or folded inward against the inner face of the member e to thus form a double seam or interlocled joint extended above the upper finish line of the member e and are bent or lapped over uponv and with the same and'hainmered or smashed, as shown in Figure 9, to malgre a firm union at the side. In the construction shown the vertical and horizontal members are each, formed of a single strip of relatively thin sheet metal bent longitudinally to form inner and outer face portions and a central portion. connecting the face portions. In the vertical member a the central portion forms the back wall a2 connecting the outer edges of the face portions and between the inner edges of the face portions, that is the edges adjacent to the window sash, is the opening in which is secured the separable portion Z). In the horizontal member e, on the other hand, the cen" tral portion between the inner and outer face portions extends between the inner edges of these face portions. that is the edges adjacent to the window sash.
The horizontal or lintel member e is formed, on the face portion opposite that on which is formed the corner construction .above described, with a rabbet e and the mitre joint. The outer, or upper,.wall of rabbet e is provided at its end with an upturned, relatively short Vtab e8 and,at a point opposite the inner wall of rabbet al", is .pro-V vided with a transverse slot e7. The outer, or rear, wall of rabbet al -is provided at its end with a relatively long tab as of such length as to .permit itsend portion to be folded over onto the relatively short tab e8 so as to enclose it. After it is thus folded. over onto tab e8 the two vtabs are together, folded over lonto the upper wall of rabbet e6.
The inner wall of rabbet al is provided at its .end with a tongue aiadapted -to be passed through t-he transverse slot e7 and of such length that when passed through the slot and bent down against the upper wall of rabbet c it will extend to the base of tab es terlocked tabs aS and es. The rabbets e and f 01 are thus iirmly locked together.

Should. it be necessary at any time to renew either sash pulley or its spindles, the face plate b yof the jamb `is removed,the screws d and .elo are withdrawn and the brace is `lowered within the jamb suiiciently vto permit the screw det to be withdrawn and the spindles released for substitution or adjustment or repair.
It will be understood that various cha-nzgcs can be made in details of construction and arrangement and that the invention, except as pointed out in the claims, is not restricted to the particular construction shown and described herein.

In acorner construction for sheet metal window frames, the combination of a vertical frame member and a horizontal frame member each of said frame members having a rabbet formed on one of its faces the outer wall o1 one of the rabbets extending across and closing the end of the other and having a tongue -formed on its inner wall, the outer wall of the other rabbet being provided with a transverse slot adapted to permit said tongue to pass through it, said tongue beingy bent down into Vcontact with the wall in which said slot is formed.

In a corner construction for sheet metal Vwindow frames, the combination of a vertical frame member and a horizontal frame member each of said frame members having a rabbet formed on one of its faces the outer wall of one of said rabbets extending across and closing the end or" the other rabbet, having a relatively long tab on the end of its outer wall and a relatively long tongue on the end of its inner Wall, the outer wall of the other rabbet having a relatively short tab on its end and a transverse slot opposite the inner wall of the first mentioned rabbet adapted to permit said tongue to pass through it, the tongue being bent down into contact with the wall in which the slot is formed, and the tabs being interlocked one with the other.

In a corner construction for sheet metal window frames, the combination oi' a vertical frame member and a horizontal frame member each of said frame members having a rabbet'formed on one of its faces the outer wall ottone of said rabbets extending across and closing the end of the other rabbet, having a relatively long tab on the end of its outer wall and a tongue on the end of its inner wall of a length corresponding to the width of the other rabbet, the outer wall of the other rabbet having a relatively short tab on its end and al transverse slot opposite the inner wall ot the iirst mentioned rabbet adapted to permit said tongue to f pass through it, said tongue being bent down into contact with the wa'll in which the slot is formed land extending towards the end or' said wall. carrying the relatively short tab, the tabs on the ends of the outer walls of the rabbets being interlocked one withthe other and bentdown'v onto vthe end of said tongue.

In a sheet metal window frame, the combination of a vertical frame member and a horizontal frame member each comprising an inner and outer face portion and a central portion continuous'pwith the face por-k tions the'central portion of the horizontal member extending between the inner edges ot its face portions and the central portion of the vertical member extending between the outer edges of its face portions, a heavy metal brace secured within t the vertical frame member near its upperv end, vand an ear continuous with the centralfportion of the horizontal member and bent into *parallelism with said brace and secured thereto.

In a. sheet metal window frame, the combination .of a vertical frame member, a heavy metal brace Secured therein at its upper end and extended above the sameand indented7 a spindle seated inthe :indented portion of the brace, a sash pulley mounted on the spindle, a plate, and means to secure the plate to the brace to clamp the spindle in its seat.

In a sheet metal window frame, the combination of a vertical frame member, a heavy metal brace secured therein at its upper end and extended above the same and indented horizontally. spindles seated in said indentation, sash pulleys mounted on the spindles, a plate having an indented portion to enter the indented portion of the brace between the ends of the ltwo spindle's,'and means to secure the plate to the brace to secure the spindles in the indented portion of the brace. v
