IMPROVEMENT IN GATE-FASTENINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,754, dated October 11, 1875; application iiled September 13, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM LEAGH, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Gate-Fastening; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front View of gate with. one corner broken out to show the fastening; Fig. 2, a plan view; and Fig. 3, a detail vertical section of the fastening.

The invention relates to fastenings that enable a gate to be latched automatically, as it swings to the head-post, by gravity or the action of a spring. It will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.

A represents a gate; B, the hinge-post; and O, the head-post. On the latter I fasten a bracket, D, in which is pivoted the rod E,

having arrow-head Fat one end, and in the same plane therewith the right-angled weightarm G, protruding through the slot 01. The arrow-head is reversely beveled or inclined on its wings ff, so that the slotted angle-plate H, which is fast on the rail a of gate, will, by

its pressure on these inclines, cause the arrowhead F to turn and pass through the slot h,
