UNITED STATES A 1,687,043 PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE E. STRICKLAND, OF ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY,' ASSIGNOIR- OF ONE- TI-IIRD TO DAVID S. BROWN AND ONE-THIRD TO'EMMA R. DAWSON, BOTH OF AT- LANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY.
SIGN.
Application filed March 19, 1927,-Seria1 No. 176,803. Renewed April 26, 1928.
This invention relates to certain improvements in signs and has relation more particularly to a device of this kind especially designed and adapted for use instreet display, and it is an object of the invention to provide a sign of this kind embodying a dis-- In order that my invention may be they better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, whereinz Figure l is a view in elevation of a sign constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the device as illustrated in Figure 1 with certain of the parts in elevation;
Figure 3 is a view in top plan of the device as illustrated in Figure 1 with different positions of the sign member or plate indicated parting from the principles and spirit thereby broken lines;
Figure 1 is a view in structure as herein set forth.
its herein disclosed B denotes a base memher of requisite dimensions and which has its under surface provided with a relatively large pocket 1, the base wall a of which is provided with a recess 2. Extending up wardly from the base B is a tubular standard or column 3, the bore of which being in communication with the recess 2. This standard or column 3 is threaded, as atl, or otherwise as may be preferred operatively engaged with the base B.
Extending through the standard or column 3 is a shaft '5, the lower end portion of which is operatively engaged, as at 6, with a disc 7 housed within the recess 2, and the bottom plan of the opposite end portion of the shaft 5, as herein disclosed, is provided with an outstanding collar 8 resting upon the upper end of the standard or column 3. The shaft 5 extends a desired distance beyond the collar 8 and engaged with said extended portion 9 is a socket member 10 held to the portion 9 through the instrumentality of the set screw 11 or the like. This socket member 10 carries the sign plate or member 12 which may be of any preferred configuration and dimensions but preferably has its flat faces vertically disposed.
The disc 7 at a point offset from its center is provided with a depending member 14 to which is suitably secured an extremity of a retractile spring 15 the opposite end portion of which spring is secured to a member 16 depending from the base wall a of the pocket 1.
The tensionofthe spring 15 is such to normally maintain the sign plate or member 12in a'fixed position yet readily permit said member or plate 12 to yield to the action of the wind so that the liability of such action toppling over the sign is substantially eliminated.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a sign constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification'without deof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim A sign comprising, in, combination, a fixed part including a tubular standard, a shaft disposed therethrough, a sign plate carried by the shaft, a disc carried by the shaft, and a retractile springhaving connection with the disc at a point offset from the shaft and with the fixed part to normally maintain the sign plate in a predetermined position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
CLARENCE E. STRICKLAND.
