UNITED STATES 1,686,819 PATENT OFFICE.-
ALBERT KIRSCHBAUM, OF NEWARK, NEW .ERSEY noon.
Application ined May 26,
fings which form a part of thisdescription,
FiOure 1 is a perspective fromv the room side showing a door which embodies this invention with the main door thrown back and the screen door closed,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line VII-II of Fig. 1, showing the doors in the same position. l l 1 F ig. 3 is a Vertical section through the doors 1 on the line III-III of Figs. 4 and 5.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of a portion of the two doors together as they appear from the corridor side. Y
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line V-V of Figs. 3 and 4, taken partly through the door pulls. l
Fig. 6 shows the detachable pull from the side which attaches tothe door. 7
A door` frame 10 has its middle portion screened by a screen door with a main portion 11 of half the normal door thickness and a portion 11 adjacent to the hinge edge o1- normal door thickness which is attached to the door frame by hinges 12, 12. The screen door is of such Vertical length and is so hung that it will be oppositefthe lines of sight of people of various heights when standing, but does not extend to the upper `and lower portions of the frame opening. A main unitary door consisting of upper and lower portions 13, 13 of normal door thickness and a middle portion `18 of approximately half thickness closes the upper and lower portions of the frame opening and is hinged to the Y door frameby hinges 14, 14, the axes of whichare onthe same line with the axes of the hinges for the main door. All of the hinges may be such as are shown in my United States lPatent No. 1,619,578, dated March 1, 1927. The 'mid-` dle lportion of the'main door adjacent toits hinge 'edge is cut away and the rest oi the middle portion is recessed to approximately halt' thickness on the screen 'doorside so that the screen door will set in flush. The two doors when together areV kept apart about a sixteenth of an inch by pads of felt y15, 15. The joints at 1927. serial No. 194,277. Y
`the top and bottom of the screen dor vare slightly open also,= so that ,air cany circulate between the doors and maintain the same temperature on both sides of both doors andkeep them `from warping. At the hinge edge the joints are stepped sotha't when-the doors are together there will be no crack through which one can see.
The screen door has on the side away from the'other door a fixed pull 18 andv on the opposite side a pull-block 19. Machine screws 21, 21 secure one tothe other. A hole 23 is cut in the main door through which the pull-block passes kwhen the doors are both to be closed and opened together. f A detachable pull 24 is attached to the pull-block. It has a baseV which is larger than hole through which the pull-block passes so that it serves to clamp the two doors together. The base has a T-slo't 25 which is engaged by a T-head 26 formed on the pull-block. A knurled head screw 27 also connects the detachable pull to the pull-block. This pull is in the form of an upstanding hook and can be used as an arm-pull if one needs to open the door when both hands are carrying a tray. At its end is a rubber bunter button 30.
Ordinarily when the room is occupied and there is .frequent occasion to pass in and out, the main doorrwill be thrown back and only the screen door kept closed. When the doors are are tobe separated and so used, the detach! able pull is taken off from thepull-block and reattached after-.separating the doors; To insure that the screen door is kept closed, a door closer not shown may be attached to it. Especially suitable for this purpose is a` concealed type of closer and check which isset in a mortice in the door frame.
' I claim:
1. In combination with a door-frame, a screen door hinged to the doorfframe for screening the middle portion of the frame opening, the main portion of the screen door being of approximately halt' et normal door thickness, and a main door for closing the upper'and lower portions of the frame opening l`and hinged to the door frame, the middle Vportion ofthe main door being` 01": approxiscreen door hinged to thedoor-rame forv screening the middle portion ot' the frame opening, the portion offthe'screen door adjacent to its hingeedge being of normal door s,
thickness and the rest being of approximately half thickness, and a main dooi1 for closing the upper and lower portions of the frame opening and hinged to the door-frame, the middle portion of the main door adjacent to its hinge edge being out away and the rest of the middle portion being of approximately half thickness so that the screen door may be set in flush. the hinges for both doors having their axes in the 10 saine line.
3. In combination With'afdoor-rarne, a
Legame screen door hinged to the door-fraine for screeningy the middle portion oic the' frame opening, a main unitary door for closing the upper and lower portions of the frame opening and hinged to the door-frame, the hinges for both doors having their axes on the same line, and the doors lying together When closed,
vand a detachable door-pull exterior to the main door and'co-nnected through an opening 20vv therein to the screen door.-
