Description

Patented @et 9, 1928i.
nm-'ryan STATES PATENT goFFlca.
WIRE sTRn'roHER.
Application filed January 31', A1327. Serial No. 165,007.
Thi-s invention relates to the class of pushingV and pulling Implements and'pertains particularly toa wire stretching device.
Thepriniary'object of this invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth,
a wire stretcher havingan ir'nproved wire gripping ineans, easily'andquicliy engaged or disengaged and designed to exert its gripping engagement on the wire in proportion to the pressure or force applied to the tool for the stretching ofthe wire.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wire stretcher of the character described whichl will be easy to handle and operate, eiiicient, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. n
-Nuinerous other objects of the invention will become apparent asn the description of the saine proceeds, and the invention will be best understoocL from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with they accompanying drawings forming a part of this speciification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings, but maybe changed or modified so long as such changes or niodications inarl; no material departure from the salient features of the invention,.as expressed in the appended claiins.
ln the drawings Figure l is a top plan view of the tool einbodying` this invention, shownV as in use.
Figure 2 shows the tool partly in vertical longitudinal section.
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken substantially upon the line 3-3 of Figure l.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like1A numerals of referenceV indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, numeral l indicates a relatively broad,
flat elongated body, which inay be construct-v ed of wood or a light but strong' metal and at the outer end of the body a handle 2 is formed by cuttinp` inwardly upon each side ofthe body to forni the reduced extension shown. it the other or inner end of the body one broad face thereof is provided with the enlarg'cinent 3 which is fornied of the saine width as the bocy and which has the inner edge wall formed substantially seini-c'rcular as in" :ated at il, this wall being` convex as shown. The central. portion of the wall l is provided with the gripping teeth 5.
ivoted to the central portion of that faceof the tool body l upon which the enlargenient Sis' formed, is a gr'ippjngdog 6, p`v0t ally helduponthe bodyby the'pin 7 and having'thefcurved eccentric face 8 formedl to set up `gripping teethv 9 whichwork in yopposition'to ythe teeth' aboutits"pivot,y i
An actuating-arm 410 extends from one side of thedog' to and beyond one side edge [of the body l and has an eyell formed'therein-V for the receptio'nofoneend of a link 12.
whenthe dog-is swung v Surrounding the body'l vadjacent the outer Vend thereof is a broad band vlB'whichis pro.-
vided with a central slot 14 extending longitudinally of the body, through which a retaining pin 15, carried by and extending from one faceof the tool body, projects. One side of the band 13 has an apertured ear 16 formed thereonr and projecting laterally therefrom through the aperture ofl which ear the other end of the link l2 engages.
iro'jecting from a central portion of the nner end of the body is formed a post engagspur 17, which is adapted to beforced into a tree or post to forni a fulcrum forthe body vto swing from.
. Reference to Figures 1 andQ of the drawings will readily show the operation of this device, for itwill be seen that the spur 17V is adapted to engage a tree or post 18 with that face of the body carrying the enlargement 3 and dogI 6, uppermost.
- wat the i001 in aus positionne band is is slid inwardly upon the body causing the dog 6 to be yswung to widen the space between its eccentric toothed face and the toothed face of the curved portion 4 of the enlargement.
The wire 19 which runs from Aanother post is then placed between `the two toothed surfaces and by pulling the sleeve 13 outwardly it will be readily seen that the dog will be caused to bind the wire between the surfaces described. By pulling upon the handle 2, as for example, to the right, the grip of the dog 6 upon the wire 'i9 will be increased While the wire is being over an adjacent post. v
, Frein the foregoing description it will be V readily observed that the structure described is of siinple construction and will be easy to operate. Y Y y Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:
l. A wire stretcher of the character described, comprising an elongated body memf bei', a spur upon one end of the body for securing the same rto a fixed element, a ixed' jaw upon one face of said body adjacent the spur carrying end and curving across the face thereof, a pivotally mounted jaw upon the same face of the body as said fixed jaw and having one face arranged in opposed relation to the working face of the fixed jaw, the working face of said pivoted jaw being eccentrically curved to increase or decrease the space between the jaws when the Pivo-ted jaw is swung about its center, a control arm carried by the pivoted jaw and extending beyond one side of the body member, a band surrounding and slidably ysecured to the body member adjacent the outer end thereof, and a linlr'connection between said band and the outer end of said arm, for swinging the jaw upon shifting the band longitudinally of the body member.
2. In a wire stretcher of the character described, comprising an elongated member, a spur extending longitudinally of and'from one end of the member Lfor securing the same to a fixed object, aiixed jaw upon the member adjacent the spur carrying end thereof, said jaw having the working face thereof of arcuate contour, a -ivoted jaw member secured to the e. ligated inem-ber -adjacent the working face of the fixed jaw and having an eccentric worlrillr facer, co-acting with the fixed jaw, an arm carried by said pivoted jaw extending laterally -of the elongated member and toward therear of the saine, a relatively broadband lsurrounding the elongated member adjacent the rear end thereof,
and adapted for limited movementlongitudi nally thereon, a laterally extending ear 'ca-r# ried by said band, and a link member connecting said ear with thefree outer end of said jaw arm.
tures.
