ADJUSTABLE rosrrivn-snrr STEEL-BEAM noon.
Application filed July 28,
This invention relates to an adjustable positive grip lifting device which has been primarily. designed "for lifting structural steelmembers such asI beams, Ts, H columns, angles and the like. a s V "The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character which is adjustable andwhich is'engag'eable upontheflan'ge of a structural steel member which will permitt-he structural steel member to be lifted thereby very easily without 1 danger of slipping.
Another object of the invention is to provide adevice which may be easily and quick applied to a structural steel member at approximately its center so that it may be lifted bya hoist into the desired position.
lVit-h the foregoing and 7 other objects in view which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawings,
wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device shown in applied position preparatory to lifting,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken substantially upon the line 22 of Figure 1.
longitudinal axis of the arm 11. The top of the arm 10 upon which aperture 12 may be rounded, is clearly shown upon the draw-- ing, to vfacilitate the insertion of thehook.
I The body between the apertures .12 and at the juncture between the two arms may be recessed, thus saving metal and making the hook fairly light, although the strength of the body will not be decreased thereby.
On the side 13 of the lower arm 11 which is exposed toward the upper arm 10, there is formed a shoulder lion which the bottom edge of the I beam I or similar structural steel member may be positioned. A slot 15 is formed in the army 11, having one end ter- 1926. 'sei-iainc. 125,4 2af.
minating onthe side 13 and this slot extends a considerable distance along the arm. The
sides of the arm adjacent the slot. are preferably'thickened, so as to make this arm equally strong." I
A locking me -ber'16 is sli'dable in the slot 15 and has both endswidened, as shown in Fig. 2', to prevent its withdrawal'from the slot. The end of the locking'inember, which ison the side 13 ofth'e arm 11, is angular in form, as indicated at 17, extending toward the shoulder 14. 1 The operation of the improved device is as follows: I v I lVhen it is desired to lift a structural steel member such as the I beamI, the hook is so positioned with respect to one of the fiat sides of the I beam that the bottom rests on the shoulder 14;. "The locking member 17 is raised to the top of the slot 15 and when the arm 11 is positioned against the side of the I beam the locking member is pressed clownwardly or allowed to fall downwardlyover the top edge of the I beam. When this is" 7 done the hoist may be operated to lift the I beam to the desired location. During the lifting, the weight of the I beam on the hook will cause the hook to swing downwardly with. respect to the hook I-I so that the I beam will be resting to a great degree directly against the face 13. It will not slip off of this face because of the shoulder. 14 and the locking member will-serve to maintain the. I beam against the face 13. r
The locking member also serves an additional function. In the event that the improved device is not positioned t t the center of the I beam, the I beam would normally tend to slip endwise from between the shoulder 14L and'the locking member. I Ihere is a small clearance between the enlarged ends of V the locking member and the edges of the arm 11, and this clearance enables the locking member to swing slightly so as to bind and prevent the locking member from being forced upwardly within the; slot due to an attempted tilting action of the I beam. In this way the locking member cannot be forced upwardly and its edges will engage upon the edge of the I beam and eifectively'prevent the I beam from slipping out of the device.
From the above described constructionit Ina willbe appreciated that an improved positive grip is provided which will enable structural steel members to be easilylifted by a lhl ' it can be lifted by the hoist.
hoist without danger of slipping, Further-' more, the device can be very easily and quick- 1y applied to a structural steel member so that The apertures 12 may be increased or reduced in number, a plurality being preferabl employed for the reason that on lifting lig t articles the hook is preferably placed in the aperture nearest the arm 11, whereas in lifting heavier articles the hook H will be placed in an aperture more remote from the arm 11.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction Without departing from e the spirit or scope of the invention as de- [I claim:
7 1. A device of the class described comprising a body roviding two arms rigidly connected toget er and arranged at an angle to caclrother, there being a shoulder adjacent fined bv the appended claims.
the end of one arm on that side disposed to-' ward the other arm, said other arm being 7 adapted tobe lifted by a lifting element and I mentioned arm.
means mounted uponthe first mentioned arm for holding the upper part of an object placedupon the shoulder adjacent the first 2. A device of the class described compris ing a body providing two arms rigidly conside of the arm on which the shoulder is l0- cated and which extends towards the shoulder. 3
3. A device of the class described compris ing a body providing two arms rigidly connected together and arranged at substantially right angles to each other, there being a plurality of apertures extending transverselythrough one arm providing for the insertion of a lifting hook, there being a shonla der formed on the other arm adjacentits end on that side disposed toward the first arm, there being a slot formed in'the other'arm, a locking member slidable' vtherein andeheld from being Withdrawn therefrom, said'lock ing member having an angular end extending toward the shoulder;
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specifieation' CARLTON E. CURRIE.
