Patented Apr. 13, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in pipe lifting jacks for use especially in laying crosscountry pipe lines.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a simply constructed, easily operated jack for lifting pipe sections of different diameters and swinging the same laterally into alignment with a pipe line for screwing into the line.
Another object is to provide a pipe jack operative by swinging of a pivoted hand lever vertically to lift a pipe section into alignment with a pipe line.
Still another object is to provide a pipe jack operative as above set forth and equipped with efiicient means for rotatably supporting pipe sections of different sizes for easy turning to screw the same into the line.
Other and subordinate objects, together with the precise nature of my improvements and advantages thereof will become readily apparent when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved pipe lifting jack in the preferred embodiment thereof;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view partly in side elevation and broken away with parts shown in vertical section; and
Figure 3 is a view in horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the jack of my invention comprises a straight hand lever I pivoted at its lower end by a cross pivot pin 3 between a pair of upstanding ears 5 on a base plate I so that said lever is vertically swingable relative to said plate.
The hand lever I is square in cross-section for a purpose presently seen and is preferably formed of square tubing for strength, and one side of the hand lever I, constituting the front side thereof, is formed with vertically spaced apertures 9, the purpose of which will presently be explained.
At the front side of the hand lever I, a substantially hook-shaped pipe supporting and lifting cradle I l is provided on a carriage I3 slidable longitudinally on the hand lever I.
The carriage I3 is slidably mounted on the hand lever I for adjustment longitudinally of said lever to correspondingly adjust said cradle II and for that purpose, is provided with a pair of upper and lower sleeves I5. I! fitting around said lever I, and a pair of side cheek plates I9, 2|
extending forwardly of said lever I for conn ction to said cradle.
The" cradle II comprises a shank 23 and a V-shaped lower end cradle portion 25, and is pivotallysuspended between the cheek plates I9, 2|, with said portion 25 extending forwardly, by a cross pivot pin 21 adjacent the upper end of the shank 23, the arrangement being such that said cradle II is swingable in opposite directions to swing its lower end portion 25 toward and from the hand lever I, respectively.
A coil spring 29 interposed between the upper end of the shank 23 and the upper sleeve I5, and above the pivot pin 21, and which surrounds studs 3|, 33 on said end and sleeve, respectively, normally swings said cradle to swing its lower end portion 25 toward the hand lever I.
A rearwardly extending stud 35 on the lower end portion 25 of the cradle II is provided for selective engagement in the before-mentioned apertures 9 when said lower portion 25 is swung toward the hand lever I, whereby to lock said cradle II to said hand lever I when said cradle is adjusted in selected positions longitudinally of said lever.
A hand grip 31 on the upper end of the shank 23, above the cross pivot pin 21, provides for manually swinging the cradle I I in opposition to the coil spring 29 in the direction to swing the lower end portion 25 away from the hand lever I for withdrawing the stud 35 from the selected aperture 9 to unlock said cradle I I, and hence, the carriage [3.
A pair of rollers 39 is provided on the lower end portion 25 at opposite sides of the apex of said portion for rotatably supporting a pipe section thereon. The rollers 39 are provided with sealed bearings 4|, of any suitable type, adapted to be frictionally inserted in selected apertures 43 in said portion 25 to space said rollers apart for supporting pipe sections of different diameters.
In using the described jack, to lift and align a pipe section 47 with a ipe line 49, as: shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, the jack is stood on the base plate I at the proper distance from the end and one side of the pipe line 41. The cradle II is then adjusted longitudinally of the hand lever I and locked to said lever, as best shown in Figure 2, so as to lift the pipe section it into alignment by swinging of the hand lever rearwardly into substantially upright position. The hand lever I is then swung forwardly to lower the cradle II for loading of the pipe section it onto the rollers 39. With the ipe section thus loaded,'the hand lever l is swung rearwardly so that the pipe section 41 is lifted by said cradle l I and swung laterally into aligned position, as shown in Figure 1. When aligned, the pipe section 41 may be rotated on the rollers 39, by suitable means, to screw the same into the pipe line.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention, without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein preserved to such modifications as fall within the.
scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what isclaimed as new is: a
1. A jack for lifting a pipe section and swinging the same laterally into alignment with a pipe line for screwing therein comprising a base plate, a hand lever having alower end pivoted on said plate for 'swinging'of said lever. vertically, a carriage on said lever, a pipe supporting cradle on said carriage for vertical swinging by said lever to lift the pipe section,'said carriage being slidably adjustable along said lever to correspondingly adjust said cradle in accordance with the height to which the pipe section is to be lifted, said cradle being pivotally suspended from said carriage for swinging toward said lever, and means to lock said cradle to said lever in the different adjusted positions of the cradle operative by swinging of the cradle toward said lever.
2. A'jack according to claim 1, said cradle being of hook form with rollers thereon for rotatably supporting the pipe section.
3. A jack according to claim 1, said means comprising a stud on said cradle, said lever havingspaced apertures therein for receiving said stud in said positions of the cradle.
4. A jack according to claim 2, said rollers being relatively adjustable on said cradle to variably space the same apart for supporting pipe sections of different diameters.
5. A pipe jack according to claim 1 and spring means between said cradle and carriage for swinging the cradle.
