Description

Oct. 2, 1928.
s. F. BROHMAN RAILROAD "I'IE Filed May 19, 1927 Patented @et. 2, l928.
RAILROAD TIE.
Application filed May 19, 1927, Serial'No. 192,735, and in Canada May 11, 1927.
This invention relates to improvements in railroad ties, and the objects of the 1nven- 'tion are to facilitate the running of trains in providing a durable, simply constructed metal tie for railroads to which are secured suitable retaining plates.
A further object is to provide a device of this character in which the several parts are readily accessible to inspection and repair, and adapted to satisfactorily perform the functions required of it. v
ith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts described in the present specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form part of the same.
Referring now to the drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure. I
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved tie with rail sections secured thereon.
' Figure 2 is a top plan view.
Figure 3 is a section on the line of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectlon on the line r-l of Figure 2.
Figure 5 1s a side elevation of a modmed form for securing the rail sections on the tle.
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6 6 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a modified form of tie adapted for soft ground.
Referring more particularly to thedrawings, A designates the improved tie as a whole comprising a hollow metal portion 8 with sides tapering slightly towards'the top 10 on which is a separately formed top plate 9 in which are formed transverse grooves 33 to engage with the rail section 12 rigidly secured thereon as shown in' Figure 2 by means of a plate 13 on one side and bolts 14 and 15 extending through the top. 9 and through said plate and through the bottom 16, securing nuts 16 being provided for the bolts. The plate13is adapted at its inner end to follow the contour of the rail as at 17 to engage with and clamp the base 18 and web 19 respectively, of the rail 12. On the opposite side of the rail to the plate 13 are plates 20 and 21 rounded and suitably curved at their inner ends to engage and clamp the base and web of the rail 12. Bolts 22 and 23 extending through these plates and through the top 9 and bottom 16 of the tie are provided, with securing nuts 24 therefor.
The plates 20 and 21 are secured by staybolts and nuts, and can be, when the latter are loosened, swung outwardly to permit ready insertion of the rail sections. 1 All the inside plates are preferably constructed to operate in this manner. a
In Figure 2, a single inside plate 26 is shown, secured by a short bolt 27 to the tie and engaging the base of the rail. In Figure modified "form of constri'iction is shown, similar 7 inside plates 28, as indicated at 26 in 2, and secured to the top of the tie by a screw-threaded bolt 29.
In Figure 7, a further modified form of tie is shown, adapted for certain kinds of roadbed having integral therein, lugs or angular extensions 30 and 31 on each side of the base 32.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodin'ients of my invention, within the scope ofwthe claims, con structed without departin from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings be interpreted as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense.
By the use of this tie thousands of dollars can be saved yearly in the operation of any railway as cost-of replacement and labor can be very materially reduced.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A railroad tie comprising a substan-' tially hollow body portion, a cover plate for the body portion formed with a transverse groove adjacent each end to engage with rails, clamping plates on each side of the rails, and securing bolts extending through said plates, the cover and the body portion.
2. l he railroad tie according to claim 1 in which the retaining plate 13 is.
1 H as in Figs. 1 and 2, but having single characterized by the fact that a single clamping plate formed with a curved inner edge conforming to the contour oi the rail is provided on one side of one rail and a pair.
of retaining plates conforming attheir inner ends to the contour oi the rail and curved are provided on the other rail and adapted on the bolts being loosened to be swung outwardly,
In witness'whereot I have hereunto set my hand. SAlVlUEL FREDERICK BROHMAN.
