RAIL JOINT.

This invention relates generally to rails used by railroads of all classes for steam, electric or otherwise propelled rolling stock, the invention having more particular reference to a novel type of rail joint.
The object of the invention is the provision of an improved rail joint which will strengthen the rail at the joint.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a rail joint of simple and novel construction.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
The figures shown on the drawing is a perspective view of my improved rail joint.
The upper flange 10, the web 11, and the lower flange 12, are those of a rail of common, ordinary construction such as generally used for rail roads of all classes.
As here embodied my improved rail joint comprises a tongue 17 formed at the side of the said web 11, flush with the extremity of the above described rail, and provided with a curved extremity 18, so as to somewhat enlarge the tongue 17, with a suitably shaped recess 19, formed in the engaging member 19, extending from the side of the web 11, it being clearly understood that the said tongue 17 and the said engaging member 19, are below the edge 10 of the upper flange 10. As a means of firmly holding the tongue 17 and the engaging member 19 in position, I have provided a bolt 20 with a nut 21, located in an elongated aperture 22 conveniently formed in the said tongue 17 and in the said engaging member 19, it being understood that the elongated aperture 22 will allow for expansion and contraction of the said rails.

creases the cross section of the rail at the said rail joint, so as to prevent accidents due to weak rail joints, and to increase the useful life of the rail.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United Sta-tes is as follows 1. A rail joint comprising a tongue formed at the side of the web of a rail, and flush with the extremity of the said rail, said tongue provided with a curved extremity and engaging a recess form-ed inan engaging member extending from the side of a web of a second rail, said tongue and said engaging member below the edge of the upper flange of the said rail and the said second rail, a bolt with a nut located in an elongated aperture formed in the said tongue and in the said engaging member, as a means of holding the said rail and the said second rail in position.
2. In a rail joint, rail end portions comprising lateral web extensions, a projection on the end of one of said lateral extensions disposed outwardly with respect to said rail and terminated on a line with the end thereof, the other of said lateral web extensions being provided with a recess to receive said projection and being extended in superimposed relation the entire length of the first mentioned extension, and a bolt disposed through registering openings in said superimposed extensions.
3. In a rail joint, a rail end portion comprising a laterally extended flange on the web of said rail terminating at the end thereof, a projection on the end of said flange, an adjacent rail end port-ion comprising a laterally disposed flange on the web of said rail extended beyond the end thereof and provided with a recess for receiving said projection in said recess, and a bolt disposed through registering recesses in said flanges.
