IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,544, dated October 5, 1875; application filed July 26, 1875.
'vices for locking the tray to the lid, when the said tray is hinged to the trunk in front of and eccentric to the lid, and when the several parts operate as more fully hereinafter explained.

In the drawing, A represents the box of the .trunk, having a deep Saratoga lid, A', hinged thereto in the usual way, the latter sustained in position, when theA trunk is open, by a folding brace, a. B is a box-tray, arranged to sit partly in the trunk-box,' but the larger part is received in the lid.
At each rear corner of the tray there is a laterally-projecting pin, b, which is received in a grooved metal plate, c, let into the top edge of the trunk-body to serve as a hinge, but from which plate the tray may be readily detached by simply lifting the tray out of the trunk. On one end ofthe tray, near the front ed ge,'a vertical leafspring, d, is secured by screws through its lower end, presenting its convex surface to the adjacent end of the lid. In the rear edge of the springis cut a notch, e, in which slips the end of a stud, f, project ing inwardly from the end ofthe lid. As the tray is swung up into the lid, this stud compresses said spring until it is received in the notch, whereby the tray is locked in the elevated position. lThe tray is detached from the lid-when the latter is lowered, as the pivotpoint of the tray is in advance of4 andi eccentric to that of the lid. As the tray is lowered its spring advances, and the stud passes out ofthe notch.
What I claim as myinvention is The combination, with the trunk A and lid A', of the tray B, hinged to the trunk in advance of and eccentric to the said lid, the vertical leaf-spring d, having the notch e on its rear side, and the stud f, the severa-l parts being arranged and operating ill-the manner described and shown.
