Tobacco Bucket Lid.

IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-BUCKET LIDS.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,417, dated October 5, 1875; application filed March 17, 1875.

To all whom it 'may concern Beit known that I, ISAAC N. REYNOLDS, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lids for Tobacco- Buckets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.

My invention relates to an improvement in the lids of buckets in which tine-cut chewingtobacco is kept on sale; and its object is to keep the tobacco contained in the bucket moist. It consists in a lid which has in its under side a concavity or chamber inclosed by a reticulated screen,which forms its bottom. When the lid is in use for the purpose intended t-he said concavity or chamber contains a Wet cloth or sponge, from which moisture is communicated through the reticulated bottom of the chamber to the contents ofthe bucket.

In order that others may know how to make and use my improved lid, I will describe the same in detail, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure lis a bottom view of a lid constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a dialnetric section thereof. Fig. 3 is a diametric section ot' a tobacco-bucket having my irnproved lid upon it.

A is a bucketlid, which may be made of tin, wood, or any other suitable material. a is an annular rim of said lid, and has a plane under surface, Which is to rest upon the top edge of the bucket. B is a concavity or chamber formed in the under side of lid A, and surroundedby the rim a. C is a circular screen, made of wire, which incloses and forms the bottom of chamber B, being supported in its place by three brackets, c c c, located as shown, so that the screen may be removed and replaced edgewise without requiring the removal of a bracket.

The screen may consist of a perforated disk of tin or other similar material.

When Vit is desired to use my improved bucket-lid for keeping moist tine-cut tobacco, which is kept on sale in a bucket, the screen C is removed from brackets c c c, and a wet cloth or sponge placed in the chamber B. The screen is then replaced, and supports the wet cloth or sponge when the lid isplaced upon a bucket.

The air within the bucket absorbs the moisture from the Wet cloth or sponge, and conveys it gradually to the tobacco, which is thus prevented from becoming dry and unsalable, as it would in the dry air ot' shops but for a consta-nt supply of moisture, which is best communicated by the contact of damp air, the direct application of Water being injurious to manufactured tobacco, as is well known to dealers and manufacturers.

Having now fully described the construction and manner of using my invention, l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a bucketlid having in its under side a chamber, B, situated above the plane ofiange or lip a, and provided with the removable flat reticulated screen C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
