FIRING DOOR.

This invention relatcsto furnace fire box doors and pertains )articuiarly to a swinging door having a foot control operating means. I
The door embodying this invention is intended for stationary boilers or locomotives of all descriptions as well as for furnaces for house heating purposes, and is designed to be used as a right or left hand operated door. The use of door'of this type'is calculated to save much fuel and owing to the location of the supporting pivot on the plummet line (on a line running along the rear edge of the furnace door opening) the door is extremely easy to operate.
The primaryv object of th s invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a door structure for a furnace firebox mounted before the fire box opening that the opening of the door may be accomplished by the depression of a lever operating button in the floor before the furnace. By this means the furnacedoor may be swungto open position through the manipulation of the operating mechanism by the foot, leaving the operators hands free for the handling of the coal shovel. Upon releaseof the foot control mechanism, the door designed to drop back to place through gravity.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafterset forth, in
connection. with a swinging furnace door of the character described, a guide track which will control the free end of the door in any position to wh ch it moves so that the door will at all times be maintain-cc in relatively close relation to the front of the furnace 7 structure and will be properly guided back to a closing position upon release of the control mechanism.
Other objects and advantages of the structure embodying this invention will become apparent as the descriptionof the same pr0- ceeds and the invention will be best understood from a. consideration of the followin detailed description talrenin connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, with the understanding however, that the invention is not confined .to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings but may be changed or'modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claim.

The bottom front corner 11 of the door 4 engages under the raised inner or concave edge of an arcuate guide track 12, which track is secured to the face of the furnace adjacent the free or swinging edge of the door as shown inl igure 1.
The guide track 12 is of arcuate contour as will be readily understood, the arc of the track being struck from the pivot point 7 of the door so that the finger 11 will be always engaged by the track during the opening of the door as above described. This traelrmember comprises two portions 13 and 14 which are arranged in offset parallel relation, the portion 14 being secured to the face of the furnace, thus maintaining the portion 18 in spaced relation with respect to the furnace face as shown.
The top edge of the door 4: has mounted thereon, an eye member 15 which is adapted to be engaged by a hook 16, which is pivot-- ally attached to the face of the furnace structure, when the door is in raised position to hold the same open when desired.
Pivotally connected to and extending downwardly from the apertured ear 7 6 at an inclination with respect to the rear end edge of the door is a two part pull arm 17, a turn buckle 18 connecting the parts toget-her for the proper adjustment of the arm. As shown the upper end of the arm attaches to the ear in a plane above the pivot 7 and substantially in a line with the adjacent end edge of the door. The upper end of the pull arm is bifurcated to receive the ear 6, as will be readily understood. The lower end of the pull arm 17 passes through a sleeve 19- at the floor line, which sleeve protects the arm from damage and the lower end of the arm below the floor, is pivotally connected to the top edge of an elongated which engages the knife edge 23 at the top of the counter weight body, whilelthe outer end of the lever arm is pivotally secured as indicated at 2% to the under side of the floor. Intermediate ends, the lever arm has mounted thereon a saddle 25 from which there projects upwardly a button 26, the button extending through the floor 2 with the top end thereof projecting a slight dis tance above the surface of the fiooras shown in Figure 2 i From the foregoing description will be readily seen that upon applying pressure to the button 26, the free inner end of the lever arm 22 will. be forced downwardly in turn forcing: down the outer end of the counter weig it body 20 and pullingupon the pull arm 17 to cause the door 4: to swing upon its pivot ,7 to a raised position shown in dotted llnes 1n liigure 1. Throughout its upward move1nent, tlie guidefinger 11 carried by the door is guided by the flange 13 and thus when the button 26 is released and the door returns to closed position through the action of gravity, the finger 11 will in sure the proper return of the door to position. From this it will be readily seen that even though the pivot pin 7 becomes badly worn the door loan not fail to be returned to proper position and can not in any way become jammed or swing away from the face of the furnace, owing to the action of the finger 11 coacting with the track flange 13.

A swinging door structure of the charthus described my invention, what actor described, designed to overlie a wall opening, comprising a door body, a relatively large ear projecting upwardly from one upper corner of said door and having an aperture formed tl ere'through on a line lying inwardly of and parallel with the ad jacent end edge of the door, a pivot element extending through said" aperture to support the door, a pull arm arranged at an inclination with respect to the said end edge of the door and having one'end pivotally connect'ed to said ear in a plane above the pivot and ona line with the adjacent end edge of the door, and a foot 01 erated lever, connected with the other end of said pull arm for the foot control of the door.
