OPERATING DEVICE FOR- DOORS.
Application filed April l,
Thisr invention relates to improvements in operating' devices for. doors. More especially it relates to a device for moving a door between open and closed positions within the container oi which the door is a part, as for example an oven or pan container. y
The invention provides simple and conveniently located means whereby a slight pull of an operating` rod opens a door and a gentle push closes it. An important feature resides in the having ot the door mounted so as to swing wit-hin the casing;` upon its openingl movement, thereby to vgrain compactness and to eliminate the inconvenience incident to such a door Opening outward. And, in cases where the container' is to rest on or close to the floor, it is a. feature that the operating handle may be at a convenient elevation and may be gripped by an operator without need for stooping so as to lift the door from the iioor as would be the case with the usual constructions.
In the attainment oi? these ends the door is pivoted within the container and is connected with a lever operated by a rod extending` 'forward of the d oor through the casim;` wall and carrying a handle. A spring connected to the lever affords balance for opening' the door or ior closing' it, and also holds the door when in wide open state. The container bottom serves to limit the doors closing` movement and a suitable stop limits its opening movement.
It is intended that the patent shall cove-r by suitable expression in the appended claims whatever features of patentable novelty exist in the invention disclosed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is an isometric of a device, without a cover, embodying the invention;
Figure 3 is an elevation in section on line 3-3 of Figure 1, but with a door open; and
Figure et is a plan with one door open and the other door closed.
Referring to the drawings a container 10 such as an oven has interiorly a medial plate 12 extending' from front to back, between two doors 14 which are pivotally mounted at the front so as to close openings 16 in the front wall at each side of said plate.
Each door 14n consists of a closure element or doorl proper 14a and a pair of arms 14h which iatter extend back into the container in 'si seria atentar to the iran: if'

Thus is provided simple and eifectual means for operating' a door which retreats into its container and is concealed vfrom view when open.. Small movement of the handle effects the needed relatively large rotating movement of the door, and consequently the handle need project but little when in its extended position. A4 compact and serviceable device results, requiring only a minimum of space for its operation. The 'arms 141" are conveniently made of sheet met-al continuous with that of the door, and in that case the sheet easily provides the point of attachment for the links at a proper location for operating the door by pull and push of link 26.
l claim as my invention:
1. Door mechanism, comprising the combination, with a container and its door, of arms extendino inward from the door and a pivotal mounting for the arms at a little dista irri. :trein the do ing the supports and axis on which the door swings; and linkage including a directionchanging lever, connected to one of said arms, and extending out of the container on the same side thereof with the door, for actuation there by an operator to open and close the door.
2. Door mechanism, comprising the combination, with a container and its door, of a lpivotal mounting for the door, located in that direction which is inward of the container from the closed door, t-he door being adapted to swing open by moving inward in the `container to a position beside the pivot at a 90O turn from its closed position; there being an arm, rigid with the door, having a point whose travel when `the door opens is an arc .whose chord is approximately perpendicular to the closed position of the door; and operating mechanism con- 'nected to the arm at said `point and having a rod extending outward 1beyond the face side of the door for actuation by an operator.
3. Door mechanism, comprising the combination, with a door `pivotally mounted on a Vhorizontal axis in the rear-of the position which it occupies when closed, and adapted to open by swinging up and back to a position above said axis, of operating' means connected to the door to swing it between open and closed positions and having a part extending forward of said door for actua:- tion there by an operator; and elastic balancing means connected and arranged to sustain part of the weight of the door when it moves from open to'closed position.
1l. Door mechanism con'iprising, in combination, a door pivotally mounted on an axis in the rear of the position which it occupies when closed and adapted to swing upward about said axis to open position; a lever mounted rearward of said axis having link connection with the door; a rod extending `forward from said lever beside the path of travel of the door to a point in front of the door and adapted to be actuated by an operator to move the door from open to closed position and from closed to open position.
Signed at Boston, Massachusetts, this thirtiet-h day of March, 1927.
