In such class of brushes owing to the construction of the securing means it has been necessary to always insert the brush stock in the same direction; that is to say,'` it was impossible to reverse the ends ot the stock or liller in relation to the back. The object ot the present invention is, therefore,- to construct the fastening means whereby the stock or filler can be inserted and held inthe back in either of two opposite ldirections.

According to this invention construct a spring controlledy catch device carried by the back and provided with means for operating the'catches combined with a catch means on or connected with the stock or plate in such manner that thestock with its bristles canv be connected to the back in either vof two opposite directions.

My invention can be carried into eliect in a variety of ways and as one example will describe my preferred construction with the aid of the annexed drawings in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a brush of the kind having a handle.

According to the drawings construct one member of the fastening means from a strip of metal A having upturned slotted lugs B and a plain lug B1 and in the slotted lugs B I position a rod C having two catch devices D each of which yis provided with a projecting nose or noses D1 bent vto form somewhat hook shaped projections. Encircling the rod C is a pair of helical springs E, El. The spring E is positioned between one of the lugs B and one of the catch devices D and the spring El is positioned between one of the lugs B1 and the other catch device D. The springs E and El exert their pressure againstthe catch devices D in a direction to normally keep the nose of the catch devices pressed towards one end of the strip A.

The strip A may be shaped with a longitudinal'recess A1 (see Figure 3) to act as a guide for the catch devices D. y'

The stock or liller, which is vshown in the drawings as ot' ovalcontour, consists of a concaved or hollowedperforated plate F hav"y y ing bosses F1 surrounding said peri'orations for carrying. the tuftsof'bristles G and has a backingplate H secured to its concave side. Such plate `H is provided with or iformed with a bridge or bridges J projecting i'rom its rear side. "In Figure 1 the bosses F1L are shown as projecting outwards but in Figure lthey are shown 4as projecting inwards.

A convenient method ot'securmg the fastening' meansV in the back is by attaching the strip A by any suitable means, such as the turned over tongues or lugs L, to the under side of the plate or liner M, which plate or liner M may be secured tothe back by screws or other suitable mea-ns. The liner M has a longitudinal raised portion M1, which is provided with longitudinal slots or openings M2 'Y through which the catches Dl can pass.

ln operation and to remove the stock or filler the end C1 of the rod C is pushed inwardly to move the rod C longitudinally.

Collars onV said rod will bear against and move the catch devices D to release the noses DL of the latter from the bridges J of the backing plate H and the stock can be removed.A It will be seen that the stock can be inserted and locked in the back in either of two directions, the spring E, El normally holding the noses Dl of the catches D in engagement with the bridges J ot the backing plate H which bridges are open at their opposite ends.

ItV will understood that various other constructions and modiications can be employed, for instance the plate M could in some cases be dispensed with and the bridges J formed with or secured directly to the per# orated plate F.

Although two catch devices D and bridges` J areshown, it will be understood that only one of each may be employed and be placed in the centre of the brush or that any num* ber may be employed, provided they are so positioned that the bridges will coincide with the noses D1 of the catches D.

What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A brush including a back having a longitudinal recess therethrough, a spring actuated rod mounted in said recess and accessible from the exterior of the back, a plurality of catch members carried by said rod and movable therewith, a bristle-carrying member adapted for coextensive alinement with the back, and mating catch members carried thereby to be engaged by the catch members of the rod to hold the bristlevcarrying member to the back. A brush, including a recessed back having a longitudinal depression, a liner iitting in said depression and provided with aligned guides7 a spring-actuated rod mounted in said guides and accessible externally of the back, a catch carried by said rod and .projecting beyond the liner, a bristle-carrying liller adapted to fit in said recess, and a cooperative catch member carried by the filler to be engaged by the rod-carried catch from either of two directions.

A brush including a back, .a strip mounted in the back and having up-turned lugs, a rod slidably carried by saidv lugs, two catches secured to and movable with the rod and each provided with a nose-piece vprojecting beyond theV strip, a helical spring encircling thev rod and positioned between the lugs and one of said catch devices to normally urge the catch toward locked position, a bristle-'carrying filler ittable within the back, and two open ended projections disposed upon the inner face of the filler and adapted to be engaged from either end by the respective catch devices of the rod,

whereby the filler may be inserted within the back from either direction and the rod manipulated to engage the cooperatingcatch devices to lock the iller within the back.
