' TYPE-BAR.
Application filed September 21, 1915. Serial No. 51,750.
To all whom it may concern Be it known' that I, OLIVER PERRY ANDER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Bars;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the mvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
This invention relates to type bars and is more particularly adapted for typewriting machines.
One of the objects of this invention is the production of a type bar provided with atmeans whereby the type may be readily character of. the
- changed, or in case of damage to the type the same may be readily replaced. 0
Another object of this invention is the for efficiently retaining and locking the type upon the type bar.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be hereinafter more clearly set forth in the specification, defined in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying with the head. 8
ings, 1 denotes the type 4 upon the drawings, in which,
.Figure 1 is a side view of the device. Fig. 2 isan end view of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view, partly in section, showing one means for. mounting the type upon the type bar. Fig. 4 is a side View, partly in section, showing another means for mounting the type upon the type bar. Fig. 5 is an. end view of the device shown in Fig. 4.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawthe aperture 2 adjacent one of its ends, one end of the aperture being formed with the countersink Mounted upon the typebar 1 is the type block 4, formed with the shank 5, provided with the reduce'd end or stem 6 and the shoulder 7, the stem (3 passing through the aperture 2 of the bar 1 with the shoulder 7 bearing against one face of the t pe bar 1, and the end of the stem (5 formed within the countersink 3 of 2, thus securing the type block type bar 1. The type bar 1, the shank 5'. and the face of the type block 4 are substantially the same width, but the type block 4 is elongated" in the longitudinal dithe aperture rection of the type bar 1. The type block 4 block bar, provided with Specification of Letters Patent.
.which type may shank 26. the sleeve Patented Jin 4, 1916. P
is provided with the flat face 9, the downwardly and inwardly inclined sidewall 10, and the straight wall 11 formed with the inwardly directed undercut portion 12. The type block 4 is also provided in its face 9 with the recess 13 as shown in Fig. 3. For supporting thetype upon the type block 4, a metal support, preferably formed of a flat plate of spring brass, is provided. This 1 supportis bent to provide the base plat 14 upon which is secured the type 15 and 16,
be the small letters and capital letters. The plate or support for the type is bent to provide the downwardly and inwardly inclined spring member 17 for en gaging the side wall 10 of the type block 4, and the support for the type is further bent. with the downwardly extending spring mem- 4 ber 18 for engaging the side wall 11 of the type block 4, the lower edge of, the spring member 18 being inwardly-bent to provide the gripping end 19 for engaging-the undercut portion 12 of the type block 4. Upon the under side of the base 14 of the type support is formed the lug 20 for engaging the recess 13 in the face .of the type block 4.
In Figs. 4 and 5, 21 denotes the type bar provided with the recess 22 formed at a point slightly remote from the end of the bar. Mounted upon the. end of the bar 21 35- is the type block 23 having formed upon its face the type .24 and 25, which type may be the usual small letters and capital letters. The type bloct 43 is provided with the shank 26, upon the lower end of which is provided the elongated ferrule or sleeve 27. The ferrule or sleeve 27 is disposed transversely or right angularly to the shank '26, and has its closed end '28 projecting slightly beyond :one side of the shank 26. while the open end 29 of the sleeve 27 extends for a greaterdistance beyond the other side of the 27 being provided with the lug 30, adjacent its open end 29. for en'- gaging the recess 2; of the type bar 21.
In the type bar shown in Figs. 1. 2, and 3, the base plate or support 14 may he a plate having one character of type thereon. and should it 'be desired to substitute this plate with another having a different character of type. the first plate may be readily removed by gripping the type supporting plate with the fingers. or a suitable tool. and forcing the same lengthwise of the type 4.. This movement will cause the lug 110 of the of the 1 spring members of the second type plate impinging the side, walls-1O and 11 of the block 4, and the lug upon the second plate engaging the aperture 13 for locking the second plate upon. the type block 4, the second type plate having upon its face, of
I course, type of'a different character.
By forming the side wall 10 of the block 4 and thespring member 17 ofthe type grasping the sleeve 27 with .plate 14 of one shape,
and the sidewall 11 of the block 4and thespring member 11 of they type plate 14 of another shape, provides an efficient means for preventing the sub-- stituted type plate from being wrongly positioned upon the type block 4. If it is not desired to change the character of the type, this arrangement is equally efficient, of course, for substituting another plate of similar type for the one previously used,
should the type on this latter plate become I damaged from any cause or reducing the cost ofrepairs. I In the .type bar shown in Fig worn out, thus s. 4 and 5,
. the type may be readily substituted by other type for either changing the character of the type when desired, or for replacing the type with other type when the first type has become damaged or injured in any way, by the fingers, or a suitable tool, and forcing the sleeve out- -wardly, which movement will release the locking lug 30 from its engagement with the recess 22 of the type bar 21, whereby the present type block 23 with its type thereon is removed, and a substituted type block introduced upon the end of the type bar 21.
\Vhile I have here shown and described the preferred.embodiment of the invention, minor variations I and alterations may be :made therein from time to time without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims. Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters- Patent, is
1. In a combination with a type; bar, of means to provide for the interchanging of the type upon the bar, means to render impossible the positioning of the type in inverse order upon the type bar at any stage, and means for locking said type upon said bar, said locking means comprising a recess and a lug for locking engagement with the recess.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a type bar, of a type block secured upon said type' bar, said type block having a flat face and its side Walls disposed at different angular relations to its face, a type plate having depending resilient members of the contour of the side Walls of said block for embracing the same, and means for detachably securing said type said type block. I I 3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a type bar, of a type block secured upon said bar, said type block having a fiat face provided With a centrally disposed recess therein, one of the side walls of said type block being acutely undercut, the
device of the class described, the
plate upon other of the side walls of the type block being disposed in right angular relation to the face of said block but having its lower portion acutely undercut, a type plate for said adapted to seat in the recess of said type block'for detachably securing said type plate upon said type block, said type plate having depending resilient side members, one of which is formed to snugly engage the acutely type block having a centrally disposed lug undercut side wall of said type block, the
other formed to snugly engage the right angular-1y disposed side wall of said type block and having its lower edge inwardly bent forengaging the lower undercut portion of said side wall, whereby to render impossible the positioning of said type plate upon said type block at any stage with the type in inverse order.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
