This invention relates to dry shaversand particularly to a mounting or clamping device for detachably securing the shaver heads to the casing.
The invention is provided for securing either a single shaver head or a plurality of shaver heads in a convenient manner and in detachable relation on a shaver casing, for the purpose of elimi hating the disadvantage of exposed screw heads on that part of a shaver case that may come in contact with the face or neck in shaving; providing a fastening means whose strength can be pre-determined and caused to break if excessive torque is applied thereto thereby preventing breakage and cracking of the case; providing a device that retracts the shaver head engaging parts when pressure is released, to avoid complete removal of the attaching device but allowing free detachment and replacement of shaver heads; providing a clamping device for securing shaver heads on casingswith or without apertures in the shaver heads; and providing for improving the appearance of shavers throughthe location of the head mounting device where it does not proiect out through the casing at a location where it is prominent and interferes with the design of the exterior of the shaver casing.

i indicates the shaver casing which will include a removable cover 2 mounted on the casing vide a channel structure. In the illustration in the drawing. the casing is illustrated as having two channels 4 arranged in spaced relation and extending transversely across one end of casing in parallel relation to one another and opening through the end of casing I. A web portion 5 or the casing forms a dividing or partition wall between channels 4. The shaver illustrated is constructed to receive two shaver heads 6 of conventional construction having base portions 1 and shaving sections 8 forming the stationary cutter structure that may be of any form wellknown in the art. These heads 6 have inner reciprocable cutters 8 of conventional form that are engaged by the ends of oscillator 3 as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 for reciprocating the inner movable cutters for shaving operation with the shaving sections 8.
These shaver heads 8 have their base portions engaged in channels 4 as shown in the drawing so that the bottom of each base portion seats in the bottom or inner portion of one of the channels in the casing, one head being mounted in each channel 4. If desired, partition 5 may under some conditions be omitted or provided as a separate part without interfering with the operation of the present invention which is directed particularly to the means for securing the heads in operative position on casing I as shown in the drawing.
For the purpose of the present invention each shaver head 6 will be provided with a suitable structure to provide a shoulder at Hi. This shoulder it may be formed in any suitable manner in the shaver head such as lay-forming a slot or opening it in the side wall 01' the stationary cutter structure.
A clamping member is formed by a strip of resilient or flexible sheet metal or other suitable material, formed into U-shape'with laterally extending arms or head engaging projections 93 provided on the free ends of the U-shaped structure. Arms It in extending laterally from ends of the arms of the U-shaped structure of the clamping member operate to provide shoulder engaging portions for engaging shoulders m of shaver heads 6, in the manner illustrated in the drawing. The U-shaped portion of clamping member I2 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, for example, is located between the shaver heads in a recess M formed in partition 5, said recess being of rectangular cross section in plan view as shown in Fig. 2. Clamping member or retaining means It slidably engages between the ad- Jacent side walls of shaver heads 6 in the central portion thereof when arms l3 are engaged in slots H. The central section of clamping member I2 is formed with an opening I5 through which extends securing member I6.
Securing member I6 is in the form of a screw having a head I! with a cam portion I8 01' frustraconical shape formed at the juncture of head I! with a reduced section I9 of the screw shank. The opposite end of the screw shank extending beyond reduced section I8 is enlarged in diameter and threaded as indicated at 20 for threaded engagement in anchor member 2 I. Anchor member 2| is in the form of a rectangular block structure slidably engaged in a socket formed in casing I as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, and as having an internally threaded bore receiving threaded end 20 of securing member I6.
The head mounting members are shown in operative position for clamping the two heads illustrated in operative position on casing I. When it is desired to remove either or both of the shaver heads, securing member or screw I6 is moved to unthread shank 20 from block 2|. This will move head I1 and cam portion [8 upwardly as illustrated in Fig. 1 to disengage from the ends of U-shaped clamping member I2. The resiliency and flexibility of clamping member I2 and its U -shaped construction will normally cause the arms of the U-shaped member with laterally projecting arms I3 on the ends thereof to move inwardly toward each other and the screw shank so that when head I! and cam portion I8 have moved upwardly to a suflicient extent, arms I3 will move toward each other into a position where they will be disengaged from shoulders I0 and openings II in the shaver heads. This position of securing member I6 will not necessitate its disengagement from anchor member 2|.
With the securing screw IS in the disengaging or release position either head may be readily removed and replaced in its position in channel 4 of casing I. In this way the heads can be interchanged, or replaced, or removed for cleaning and repairs. The clamping mechanism does not have to be disengaged from casing I while clamping member I2 is held in position by recess I4 in partition 5 so that it does not rotate with securing member I6.
Upon replacement of the heads into the position shown in Fig. 1 in channels 4 of casing I, operation of screw securing member I6 to thread the same inwardly into anchor block 2| will move cam face I8 into engagement with laterally extending arms I3 and the ends of the arms of the U-shaped structure of clamping member I2. Continued movement of securing member I6 will flex the arms of clamping member I2 laterally outward relative to the longitudinal dimension of the casing of member I6 to engage lateral projections I3in openings II and with shoulders II] on the shaver heads. Continued operation of screw I6 in this direction will move clamping member I2 toward anchor block 2| and move heads 6 toward the bottom of the channels until the bottom portions of base portions I engage the bottom portions of the channel to firmly seat in the channels where the shaver heads will be rigidly held in seated position on casing I for the normal operation of the shaver.
The reduced section I9 of the shank of securing member I6 is pre-determined to provide a weak portion in the shank of member I6 adapted to break whenever the tension or torque on securing screw I6 becomes too great. The shank I9 of securing screw I6 will break before the pressure rises to such an extent that it will cause casing I to crack or break at any point. This feature is provided due to the fact that the conventional shaver casings now used are made of molded plastic material having limited strength and, therefore, subject to cracking or breaking when excessive strains are applied thereto.
It will be noted from the arrangement of the head clamping and securing means of the present invention that it is located in a substantially concealed position between the bases of the heads where two heads are used on a shaver casing. The clamping means operates in the same direction as that in which the heads are applied and removed in the channels in casing I, which is longitudinally relative to the general shape of the casing. The clamping means does not have to be removed from engagement with the casing to provide for disengagement of the heads from their channels. Arms I3 extend laterally in inclined relation and have a camming action as they are moved laterally apart for camming the heads toward the bottom of the channels.
The present invention eliminates the use of securing or clamping screws on the outside portions of the casing in a conspicuous position as heretofore well-known in the art, eliminates the tendency of these portions of the casing to crack and the necessity in most cases of having to provide the outside portions of the casing structure adjacent the shaver heads with an increased cross sectional dimension to provide suificient strength to mount the clamping screws and provide for the distribution of stresses.
I Therefore, the present invention provides for is? substantially concealing the head clamping mechanism; provides a structure for fastening the shaver head securely on the casing that may be used for either single or multiple heads; eliminates prominently exposed screw heads at the outside of the casing adjacent the shaver heads that may come into contact with the face or neck during shaving; provides a fastening means whose strength is pre-determined whereby it will break if excessive torque is applied thereto for preventing breakage of the case; provides a clamping means that can be used with the heads with or without apertures in the heads or any complementary construction between the clamping means and the heads that will provide for interengagement thereof; and provides a device that will retract when the securing pressure is released so as to eliminate complete removal of the clamping device and at the same time allowing free replacement of the heads. The invention further provides a structure wherein the clamping means is concealed in a way that it does not disfigure the exterior appearance of the casing and thereby provides for the designing of the casing adjacent the heads to enhance its appearance in a much more desirable manner than has heretofore been feasible.
The invention claimed is:
1. A shaver head mounting wherein a casing is formed to receive and support a pair of shaver heads in spaced parallel relation on one end, comprising a clamping member between said heads, having oppositely projecting head engaging projections for simultaneously engaging both heads, and retaining means mounted on said casing, engaging said clamping member and operable to firmly move and retain said clamping member in engaged relation with said shaver heads for retaining said heads operably attached to said casing.
2. In a shaver having a casing formed to detachably receive a pair of shaver heads in spaced parallel relation projecting in the same direction outwardly from said casing, said heads having base portions engaged with the casing and shoulders formed on adjacent side portions, means for mounting said heads in attached relation on said casing, comprising a clamping member having arms engaging said shoulders on said heads and an intermediate portion guided by complementary portions of said casing, and casing carried securing means movable toward and from said casing operable in movement toward said casing to engage said clamping member and move it toward said casing for moving said heads through the engagement of said arms with said shoulders to firmly seat and retain said heads in position on said casing.
3. In a shaver havinga casing formed at one end to receive a plurality of heads in spaced relation having base portions detachably engaged with seats on the casing and shaving portions projecting outwardly from the casing in substantially the same direction, and said heads having shoulders formed on adjacent sides, a head mounting means comprising a clamping member having a pair of arms, one for engaging theshoulder on each adjacent head, and a securing member carried by said casing for movement toward and from the casing in the same direction as the heads are moved to engage and disengage said seats, for engaging said clamping member and moving it with said heads toward said seats and casing in the movement thereof toward said casing for detachably retaining said heads on said seats and casing.
4. In a shaver having a casing formed with a channel means to slidably receive the base portions of outwardly projecting separate shaver heads carried thereby, means for detachably mounting said heads on said casing comprising a clamping member engaging between adjacent heads and having a pair of laterally movable arms each engaging one of said adjacent heads, and casing carried means engaging said clamping member operable to laterally move and retain said arms engaged with said heads and to move said member and heads toward said casing in said channel means to firmly engage said casing in attached operative relation of said heads thereon. 1

In a shaver having a casing formed with a channel to slidably and detachably receive the base portion of an outwardly projecting shaver head, means for mounting said shaver head in operative relation on said casing comprising a clamping member having an arm movable later ally to engage a complementary portion of said shaver head, and casing carried means engaging said clamping member operable to move said arm laterally to engage said head and also move said member toward said casing with said head 'to engage and firmly retain said head in position on said casing for shaving operation.

In a shaver having a casing formed with a channel to slidably and detachably receive the base portion of an outwardly projecting shaver head, means detachably mounting said shaver head in operative relation on said casing comprising a clamping member slidably engaged with a side of said head and a portion of said casing for relative movement, a head engaging arm on said clamping member movable laterally to the direction of movement of. said member for engaging a portion of said shaver head when moved laterally in one direction, andan operating screw threaded in said casing and having an outwardly extending shank portion carrying a screw head at the outer end ioroperating said arm to move laterally to engage said shaver head and move said clamping member with said arm and shaver head into clamped position on said casing when said operating screw is operated to move the screw head toward said casing. v

In a shaver having a casing formed with channel means to slidably receive the base portions of a plurality of shaver heads with shaving sections projecting outwardly in the same directionin spaced relation, a head mounting comprising a flexible strip forming a clamping member engaged between said heads and having an intermediate section and a pair of arm sections flexibly extending from said intermediate section, said arm sections having the free ends engaging adjacent sides of adjacent shaver heads, and a securing member carried by said casing movable toward and from said casing and operable in movement toward said casing to engage and project said arm sections laterally'to engage and move said heads into clamping position on said casing.

In a shaver having a casing formed with channel means to slidably receive the base portions of a plurality of shaver heads in spaced substantially parallel relation with shaving sections projecting outwardly in the same direction, a head mounting comprising a clamping member formed of a resilient strip having a U-shape in cross section, the leg portions of said U-shaped member forming arms having laterally extending end portions for interengagement with portions of adjacent sides of a pair of shaver heads with the remaining portions of said clamping member extending therebetween, said casing having a recess therein for slidably receiving said U- shaped clamping member therein throughout the portion extending between said shaver heads, an

9.'In a shaver head having a casing formed with channel means to slidably receive the base portions of a plurality of shaver heads with shaving sections projecting outwardly in the same direction in spaced relation, 3, head mounting comprising a clamping member formed of a resilient strip member having a U-shape engaged in a' recess in said casing between adjacent shaver heads, the ends of the legs of said U-shaped strip having laterally extending head engaging arms thereon normally moved inwardly through the resilience of the material of said strip into disengaged relation relative to said heads, an anchor block mounted in the casing in aligned relation with the recess receiving said clamping member, a screw threaded in said anchor member having a shank extending outwardly relative to said casing and formed with a camming head on the free end and a portion of reduced cross section intermediate said head and the portion threaded in said anchor member, said head being adapted for engagement with the laterally extending arms of said clamping member for camming said arms outwardly in opposite directions upon screw threaded movement of said clamping screw into said anchor member for moving said arms outwardly into engagement with adjacent shaver heads and for further moving said heads to firmly seat and hold the base portions of said shaver heads in rigidly engaged relation in said channel means in operative relation on said casing.
