RIVETING BAR.
Application filed February 11, 1921'. Serial No. 444,250.
To all whom may concern:
Be 1t known that I, VINCENT J. POWER, a citizen of the United States. residing at Pratt, in the county of Pratt, State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Rivet-. ing Bar; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact'description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to riveting bars and has for its object to provide a device of this character, particularly adapted forinsertion between the flanges of a channel bar for holding rivets in either flange of the channel bar during a riveting operation and is particularly designed for use in connection with heads for holding rivets during a riveting operation, when said heads are so disposed that they cannot be conveniently held inthe transversely disposed groove; Also to provide a transversely disposed groove adjacent the heel of the bar for cooperating with one of the flanges of the channel bar;
lVith the above and otherobjects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, claimed it being understood that changes inthe precise embodiment of the invention maybe made withinthe scopeof what is of the invention.
In the drawings claimed without departing from the spirit Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of an automobile frame, showing the r1vet-- ing bar in position thereon.
Figure 2 is a detail perspective view'of the lower end of the riveting bar. Figure 3 is a detail sectional view through described and I a channel bar of an automobile frame, show ing the riveting bar in'po'sition for holding a rivet in the upperflange of the channel bar. 1 i
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the bar which may be of any length desired, and 2 the handle thereof.
The lower end def the bar is provided with an angularly disposed member 4, the under face 5 of which is provided with a transversely disposed groove, 6, adapted to receive and engage rivets 7 which pass throughthe lower flange 80f the channel bar 9 of the automobile frame. I posed groove 6 isof suflicient lengthto engage a number of adjacent rivets at thesame time thereby holding the rivets when any of them are being riveted. When it is desired. to holdrivets in the flange'lO of the channel bar 9, the he'elllv which is provided with an angularly shaped groove 12fisplacedin en-.'
gagement Wltl1 'tl16 lower'flange 8 adjacent itsedge, and the bar rocked on the same unl til the-upper face of the: member 4 engages the rivet 1.4 in the upper flange 10 thereby holding said rivet during a riveting operation. By. referring to Figure 3, it will be seen that when the riveting bar is forced The. transversely dis- Specification of Letters Patent Patented Apr; 1922,
downwardly at its handle end that as much pressure as isdesired may be applied to the rivet 14,and it will also beseen that theedge 1 1.5 of the flange ;8 of the channel bar will be received bythe rectangular groove 12 in the heel 11 in-s'ucha manner as to prevent inward slipping'of the lower. endofthe bar during a rivet. holding operation.
From the above it will be seen that a, riveting bar is provided which is particularly adapted forholding rivets in flanges of chart nel bars,particularly automobile frames, in
such a manner that rivets'mayi be easily held during riveting operations. n
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:-. A rivet holding bar comprising an elon-'- gated member forming-a handle, the lower ,end of said handle terminating in a substantially right angled portion forming a rivet v 'engagingfland holding member, the lower face ofsaidrivet holding member being provided With a transversely disposed groove name to this specification in the presence of extending entirely acrossthe same, the heel two subscribing Witnesses.
of the rivet holding member being provided with a transversely disposed groove adapt- VEHJENT POWER ed to engage a fiangeof a channel bar during WVitnesses:
a rivet holding operation. A. G. BOLT In testimony whereof I have signed my C. H. OGBORN.
