- ofthe top` lidor cover thereof may be utii jects may be attained, will be clearly features of the invention'in their preferred tion, extends Another object of the"` invention is to provide a novel and improved piano case of the character indicated in which thefront part lized as a music desk, and the rear part may be openedand closed independently of said front part.
:The several features ofthe invention,
whereby the above mentioned and other obunderstood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view, partly diagrammatical, of agrandpiano embodying the form, the top lid orcover of the piano case being shown closed; i .t
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale taken on the line 2.--2 of Fig. 1, but showing the front'part of thetophd orcover of the piano case in open. position, and uti-v l desk as 1t movesinto said upright-position,l and to lioldwit in said position. It will bev apparent that the desk 8 may be opened andy lizedas--amusic desk; Fig. 3 is a ing said front part in closed posltion; and
` Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 4-4 of-Fig. 2. 1
"The piano illustrated in' the drawings is provided with the usual` vertical side wall having the curved rear portion .2 and they forwardly extending parallel portions v4, and is yfurther provided with thefusual key-board 6 extending between projecting ends of said parallel portions tance Y below the piano. j f c j v In my improved construction asillustrated in the, drawings, the forward part of the top lid 'or cover of the piano case is formed by a memberl 8 which, whenin closed posibetween en d pieces or ledges 10 secured on the upper edges of said portions' 4 of the side wall of the case, and is arranged plane ofthel top of the flush with said ledges and with the remainportion of the top cover.V This `cover Y 11 Vmember 8 is adaptedrtobe moved from-its` ing horizontal or closed. position, as shown in VFigs. 1 and 3, to an upright position as shown in Fig. V2, with its lower portion abutting against the rear edge `of a music rack View similar to Fig. 2 but show 4? and spaced the usual .dis-,lk

rail or base.12. Thisy base 12 may be'of v the usual construction, and is removably secured at its ends tothe parallel side por-l tions 4 ofthe piano case with its top surface spaced'a slight distance below thetop ofthe case. When the cover memberfor desk8 is in f able guiding grooves 20 that areformed in` blocks 22 secured to the parallel portions 4.
Also,
of the side wall of the piano case. links 24 have one end pivot-ally connected with opposite ends of saidv desk 8 adjacent its forwardl edge, and have theirv other ends pivotally mounted `on pivot pins 26 secured tothe innersides of the rear end portions of the ledges 10. With this construction the links 24. and studs 16 cooperate to guide .the

closed without difliculty, and `when closed will efectivelycover the front part ofthe piano between the ledges 10, andwhen open willI form with the base y.12 a conveniently located music rack.
The portion of the `top lid. ofy the piano` case back ofthemusic desk 8 .and lledges 10l v is centrally divided longitudinallywintotwo sections 28 and 30 that are hinged togetheri by hinges 32, andthe outer longitudinal'ed'ge: of the section,l 28 Ais hinged vby hinges 34to the upper edge ofthe vertical sideywall of4 With' this construction. it
the piano case.
will be apparent `that Zthe right'hand section 80 maybe swungover upon the other 'section 28 and then the twoisections swung open `on the hingesl34; orif desired bothv sections may be swung open aboutthe hinges 341 while maintaining them in thesame plane; and
also,v if desired, thelright hand` section 30 alonemayibe swung "open,. suitable kprop sticks 36and 38 being provided for holding the two sections, respectively,"in open'positions. f
With this construction lof piano case as I l o loo , books or other. articles, and-iin fact the deskv 8.when rclosed provides a convenient support upon f which. books orv other articles may b e placed, and needfnot be opened except when itis dcsiredto use the music rack,
v Atfwillvbe evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits various modifications withoutdeparting from the spirit thereof yor the scope of the appended claims.
What I claiml is: l
1. A' case for grand pianos having, inl
combination, a side .wall having its end portions projecting forwardly, a bar extending between said 'forward end portions and spaced a `slight distance below the upper edge of thev side wall,'a top cover comprising a rear section hinged at one edge on one yof -the longitudinal upper edges of said sidewall and having its'forward edge spaced a distance back of said bar, and a front section when closed having its rear edge are rangedr adjacent the front edge ofvsaid rear section and having its forward portion resting upon `said bar, shelves vmounted on the upper'edges of saidprojectingl end portions of said side wall-withl their inner edges arrangedadjacentv the ends' of'said front section, ysaid/.rear section, front section and shelves together covering the top ofV the piano back ofthe keyboard, and devices for guiding said frontsection to permit its forward edge to be swung upwardly and rear-v wardly and its rear edge forwardly and downwardlyl to move the frontV section into upright Vposition adjacent the rear Vside of saidlbar-so asto form with said bar a music 2.
