and which shall be adapted for application to chairs of different sizes.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character stated which can be readily made of metal and which shall be neat and attractive in appearance.
/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction, combination andarrangement of parts hereinafter fully descrihed'and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein: i
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a rocking chair equipped with rockers constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a detail top plan view of the rocker,
Figure is a detail sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure 2,
F'gure 4 is a similarview takenon the plane indicated by the line of Figure 2,
s Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Figure hand i i i Figure 6 is a detail sectional v1ew taken on the plane indicated by the line 66 of Figure 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and'desiguatcd inthe several. views of the accompanying drawing, by similar reference characters.
In the drawing, 1. designates the seat, 2'
the back, 3 the legs, rocking chair.
The rockers 4 are made of metal and comprise bases 5 which are of considerable-width and strengthening ribs 6 which extend centrally and longitudinally along the upper sides of the bases The ribs 6 are corand t the rockers of a rugate'l vertically to add strength and rigidity thereto, Each rocker 1 is preferably made from a single strip of light sheet metal, and in the manufacture of the rocker the side portions of the metal strip are bent inwardly upon the central portion thereof to provide the base 5, The side portions of the metal strip are thence bent at right angles to the base 4 and brought together to form the ribs 6, after which the rib6 1s corrugated. The side edges of the bases 5 arerounded asindicated at 7 to prevent the rockers 4 from cutting carpets, rugs and other floor coverings, Guards Slormed integrally with the rear ends of the bases 5 and inclinedupwardly and forwardly, conof said ends of the ribs as shown in Figure 3. The guards 8 reinforce the rear ends oi.
the rockers i and have no sharp edges liable to cause damage to other articles ot' furniture and floor coverings. The front ends of the r1bs6 are beveled as 1nd1cated at 10, and the front ends of the bases 5 are bent upon thenu the lengths of the ribs 6, the latter are provided with a plurality of bolt receiving openings 15 The legs 3 are secured in the sockets 12 by screws 16.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
it should" be apparent that the rockers may be readily secured to or removed from a chair, thatthey may be secured to chairs of different sizes, and that they will not cause damage to other articlesof furniture and floorcoverings. y
It should be understood that the drawing ismerely illustrative and does not pretend Furthermore,
to give exact proportions.
tact with the beveledupper edges 9 of the y rear ends of the ribs 6 and embrace the sides the said drawing is illustrative of a pre ferred construction, it being my expectation that various changes and modifications may be made withoutdeparting from the spirit a and scope of the invention.
What is claimed is i 1. A rocker comprisinga base, portions returned over said base, ribs in contact with each other and rising from said portions at a point between the sides of the base, and
integral guards at the ends of the rocker engaging said ribs to reinforce them.
2. A roekereom rising a base, portions re- 5 turned over said ase, ribs in contact with each other and rising from said portions at a point between the sides of the base, and
integral guards at the ends of the rocker engaging said ribs to reinforce them, one of the guards having ortions engaging opposite sides of the ribs and the other guard extendin across end edges of the ribs.
