IMPROVEMENT IN KNIFE-POLISHERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 168,237, dated September 28, 1875 application filed August 12, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW M. DE HART, of Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Polishers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of aknife cleaner and scourer, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which-- I Figure 1 is' a longitudinal section of myimproved knife-cleaner. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same.

A represents an elongated rectangular box of any suitable dimensions, provided at one end with a mouth, a, having screw-cap b, for the admission of the scouring or cleaning powder. In the other end of the box is an aperture, d, through which the knives, or rather knife-blades, are inserted between the jaws B and O, which are located at this end of the box. The lower jaw B is made stationary, and has a horizontal upper surface, f, and the front 6 is inclined, as shown. The upper jaw G is attached to a plate, D, which extends the entire length of the box, and is soldered or otherwise permanently attached to the top thereof at the other end. The front 6 of this jaw is inclined, as shown, and above the extreme front edge of the jaw is placed a rubber or other spring, h, to hold said jaw down upon the stationary jaw B. The under surface f of the upper jaw O is inclined from the front upward, so that said jaw, in its natural position, will touch the lower jaw only along the angles a; w. The upper jaw G is pressed down by means of a knob, D, and stem m, so that the surfaces f f will be in contact with each other while the knife is being rubbed. By taking the hand off from the knob D the spring h immediately tilts the upper jaw, causing its rear end to rise sufficiently to allow some of the securing material to be drawn. in between the jaws by the motion of the knife. The plate D prevents the scouring material from getting in above the upper jaw and, as said plate extends the entire length of the box, it gives more chance for the jawto tilt by the action of the spring above it.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination ofthe upper tilting jaw 0, plate D, spring h, and knob D, with stem m, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The combination of the box A, station= ary jaw B, tilting jaw 0, plate D, spring h,

and knob D, with stem m, all constructed andv arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
