Description

F. W. THOMPSON VENTILATED GARMENT INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY.
Patented July 31, 1928 UNITED STATES FULLER W. THOMPSON, OF ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA.
VENTIL'A'IED GARMENT.
Application filed September 7, 1926. Serial No. 133,776.
The present invention relates to garments and pertains more particularly to knickerbocker trousers or knickers, such as are worn by golfers, hikers and the like.
The invention has for its principal object the provision of a garment of the class described which can be worn in hot weather with greater comfort.
An object of the invention is to provide for efficiently ventilating such garments so that the limbs of the wearer are not enclosed in an air tight garment. Knickers are commonly provided with straps or the like which girdle the legs closely just below the knees. Unlike other similar garments, all portions of the body within the knickers are completely isolated from extraneous air and are accordingly quite uncomfortable, particularly in hot weather. Garments of this class are often quite dressy. I
It is therefore one of the principal objects of the invent-ion to provide suitable ventilating means for such garments whereby extraneous air may enter the garment and have free circulation around the limbs.
Another and important object of the invention is to provide such garments with suitable ventilating means, without detracting from the conventional appearance of same, and whereby ventilation may be ap plied to golf knickers and other dressy garments without departing from the accepted principles of good taste.
Another object of the invention is to provide knickers with suitable ventilating means which are at all times inconspicuous and even invisible. 7
Still other objects and advantages of my invention will appear hereinafter.
I have illustrated my invention by companying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a golfer wearing a pair of knickers which embody my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspcctive'of such knickers.
Figure 3 is a view in cross section of the lower part of a leg portion of such knickers.
Figure 41- is a view in elevation of the lower end of a leg portion of a modified embodiment of my invention.
the ac- Figure 5 is analogous to Fig. 4 and showsstill another modification.
In the drawings I have shown a pair of knickers 1, which are provided at the waist with the usual belt portion 6, and at the lower extremities with the usual straps or within the garment, are normally isolated by said band so that the interior has no ventilation.
My invention may be variously applied to knickers ofvarious styles, and for the sake of illustration I have shown one practical embodiment of my invention and a modification thereof.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, that portion of the garment material, just above the leg band, is provided with one or more suitably large perforations or openings 10. These perforations are preferably limited to the particular area designated. In the form of the invention now being described, each opening is defined by a suitable metal binding or eyelet 11. Such eyelets protect the adjacent material from becomin frayed, and further provide rigidity around the openings. Several such openings and eyelets-may be provided in an annular series encompassing each leg of the garment.
When the garment is properly disposed upon a person, with the bands encompassing respective limbs, the material of each leg portion folds over, as at 12. Accordingly, the portion let, of the garment, in which the eyelets are disposed, is hidden from view. Said portions 14: are rendered somewhat rigid by the metal eyelets and have a tendency to stand out at an appreciable angle of inclination withregard to the vertical plane. As aconsequence the openings are directed in a downward direction and are suitably spaced from adjacent fabric as well as from the limbs of the wearer.
Referring particularly to the cross section in Fig. 3, it will be apparent that the space 9 is of appreciable cross sectional area and provides for air currents, as indicated by the arrows, moving inwardly and outwardly through the said openings.
In the normal functioning of the limbs, as in walking, or in bending the knees, or in moving the upper part of the body, the characteristic movement of the leg portions of the garment will produce a bellows action or pumping action which will positively insure movement of air into or out from such spaces, asthe case maybe.
In the form of theinvention shown in Fig. 4 the openings are covered by suitable screen-like material 16, such as fine mesh of fine non-corrosive Wires. Such screens will provide certain rigidity to the garment at points immediately above the knee, and will cause the garment to hangiproperly while providing suitably large air passages. Such screens will sittout dust and the like While permitting the air toc. "cula-te freely.
In the form shown in Fig. 5 certain per tionsof the material are removed at spaced intervals to provide openings 10. Intermediate portions 17, of the material, form spaced fingers which connect the leg band with the main leg-portion of the garment. The material of the garment above the openings has a tendency to hang almost straight donunvard so that the openings are out of sight,- While air currents are free to enter the leg-portions oi the garment between the spaced fingers 17. r
All of the embodiments described provide excellentventilation and make the garment cool, comfortable and healthful, and it will be apparent that I have provided such. ventilation without detracting from the usual appearance of such garments and while I have shown and described specific embodiments of my invention, 1 do not limit myself to any specific construction or arrangement of parts, and i may er same as I desire Without enlarging the scope of my invention as set forthflin the appended claim.
I claim V in lniiclterboclter trousers a leg portion, a leg encircling band at the lower extremity of said leg portion; said leg portion being provided With an annular series of apertures immediately above said hand.
FULLER VJ. lirlOirlPoON.
