Application filed April 21, 1927. Serial No. 185,612.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in line holders, and more par ticularly to a device of this character which is especially adapted for use in securing clothes lines, and the like, in order to retain themtaut while in use.
One of the objects of my invention. is the provision of a line holder whereby a clothes line or similar article may be readily engaged with the holder and drawn taut and then secured in this position, the device acting to securely retain the line in proper position regardless ofweight placed thereon. Another particular object of my invention is the provision of a line holder which includes in its construction, a supporting bracket having clamping jaws thereon, one of which is movably mounted upon the bracket and means is provided whereby to actuatethe movable jaw to move the same toward and away from the stationary jaw, the stationary jaw being provided with engaging edges whereby to securely clamp a line or cable between the aw faces. V
A further object of my invention is the provision of a line holder which is extremely simple, durable and efficient in use for the purposes intended and whereby the parts may be quickly assembled or disassembled.
litany other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given. To this end my invention consists in the novelconstruction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, wherein. like reference characters indicate like or corresponding partsz Fig. 11s a plan-view lllustrating the use of my improved line holder;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of one of the holders;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation;
Fig. l is a longitudinal section on the line 44l of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4c. 7
In the construction of myimproved device, I provide an angular supporting bracket which includes a vertical portion 1 formed with perforations 2 for receiving fastening elements such as screwsor the like, to attach the vertical portion to a support. Extending longitudinally from the vertical portion intermediate its ends is the horizontal portion 3 which is braced by means of the substantially triangular wings 4. Provided on the upper surface of the horizontal part 3 is a stationary jaw nemher 5 having inclined side faces 6 and a transverse clamping face 7 providing substantially sharp engaging edges 8, the purpose of which will behereinafter more fully set forth. i I i V Slidably mounted upon the horizontalv part 3 is an arm 9 provided at one end with a substantially arcuate jaw member 10 adapted to cooperate with the stationary jaw 5 for clamping a rope, cable, or the like,.be'-v tween the faces 'of the two jaw members- The horizontal part 3 is formed with a longitudinal slot 11 and the arm 9 is formed with a similar slot 12, one end=of the slot 12 entending to the rear face ofthemovable aw member 10', while the other end terminates adjacent. the inner end of the arm. Extending. upwardly from the horizontal part 3 upon oppositesides of the slot 11 are the perforated ears 13 which. extendlups wardly through recessed portions 14'. in the side-.walls of the slot 12 and receive in the perforations, the pivot pin 15.
In order to actuate the jaw member 10, a cam lever'16 'isprovided having a camshaped end 17 pivotally mounted upon the pin15 and adapted-for movement through the slots 11 and 12. .As the slot 12in the arm 9 extendsto the rear face of the jaw 10, themovement of: the cam 17 in the slot 12 will cause the cam to bear againstv the rear face of the jaw 10 upon downward movement of the lever 16 so as to force the jaw 10 toward the jaw 5; As-the lever 17, is
raisedito an inoperative position, it will be noted that the cam will engage the end of the slot opposite the jaw 10 and have a tendency to slide the arm 9 upon; the horizontal portion 3toward thevvertioal portion 1 for releasing the jaw 10 or moving the same away from the jaw 5.
Theouter end of the lever 16' is provided with a transversely disposed finger piece 18 whereby pressure maylbeexerted upon the lever 16 when it is desired to tightly clamp a rope or cable between the clamping faces of the jaws 5 and 10. It willbe apparent that by providing the inclined side faces 6 of the jaw 5 and the transverse clamping face? to form the engaging edges S, a rope or cable forced against these edges through movement of the jaw 10, will have a tendency to kink the rope or cable and thusvsecurely hold the same against displacement from between the jaws. I I
As clearly illustrated in Fig. 4:, the outer edge of the cam 17 is formed with a substantially fiat face 19 which isarranged adjacent the lever 16 and adapted to lie flat,
against the outer surface ofv the jaw 10 when inv operative position to provide a locking means for said cam.
It will be apparent thatthe device may be quickly and readily attached to a support by extending fastening members through the perforations 2 and a rope or cable may be readily placed between the jaws 5 and 10 and securely clamped after being drawn taut.
As shown in Fig. 1, the clamp isused for supporting several cross portions of a single line and should either one of the cross port-ions A or B becomebroken, the broken ends will be securely clamped between the jaws 5 and 10 sothat the remaining, portions will still be retained taut. Asillustrated,a num,- ber of holders may be arranged alternately with respect to each. other, as shown in Fig. 1,. and a single line used to provide several cross supporting members, and each cross supporting member independently retained against movement by the clamping jaws.
The device is of such construction that it is comparatively cheap to manufacture and the parts so arranged that they may be quickly assembled or disassembled and the clamping parts so arrangedas to be highly efiicient in effectiveness. 7 7 I Having thus described my'invention, it is obvious that variousv immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention;
hence I do not wish to be understoodas limiting myself tothe exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned \Vhat I claim as new and desire to scour by Letters Patent is: j j
