invention relates to grates for boiler and other furnaces, and particularly grate bar units of that type comprising a support and grate sections removably disposed thereon.
The primary object of the. present invention is to provide a novel form of end or cap section which is readily separable from and attachable to the extremity of a support having a plurality of intermediate grate sections thereon and cooperating with the latter sections and the grate unit as a whole to produce means for stabilizing the support of the grate unit and embodying structural means for conveniently connecting and disconnecting the end or cap sect-ion relatively to the support extremity, either in a grate unit organization having a fixed position or in a similar unit having a rocking structure and mounting.
A turther object of the invention is to provide an end orcap section removably applicable to the extremity of a support, and not only having structural means to facilitate application and removal of the said end or cap section relatively to the support extremity, but also comprising grate members or inwardly extending grate portions or varying lengths, to compensate fordifferences in the lengths of grate supports and to complete the grate unit covering the op posite extremities relatively to a predetermined number of intermediate grate sections held on the support between end or cap sections.
lVith the foregoing and otherobjects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the preferred construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

Fig. 3 is an inner end elevation of the imgrate section supports installed-in a grate 0rganization in accordance with the width of the latter. Each grate sect-ion support coniprises parallel sides 6 of similar construc tion and dimensions and having the greatest width or vertical extent at the center, and from the central portion thereof tapering to wards the opposite ends, as is well understood in gratesection construction. At the center of the support 5, between the sides 6 and the opposite ends, are connecting webs or bridge strips 7 and 8, the endwebs 8 forming terminalclosures for the support and extending the full vertical extent of the opposite extremities of the sides 6 of the support. The webs or bridge strips 7 and 8 are integrallytormed with the sides 6 and the upper edges of the sides 6 and the cone spondingedges of the webs or terminal walls 8 are inwardly beveled as at 9 and 10, to provide retention seating means for intermediate grate sectionsll and 12, there being three of these sections shown, or one center section and two outer sections having end jointure withrelation to the opposite ends of the said center section. The essential feature of the :presentinvention, as heretofore indicated, consists of a novel form of end or cap section 18 having an outwardly projecting body 19 with a flat top and a depending, outwardly inclined flange 20, a socket 21 opening through the bottom of the said body for convenience in applying the end or cap section to a suitable engaging or supporting meansat opposite sides ofthe furnace, said means usually being applied on a ledge or otherwise disposed and held in stable position at opposite ends of a furnace'enclosure or wall. The grate member or section 25 is also provided with a plurality of openings 27 of suitable shape, which extend therethrough andpermit ashes and other products of combustion that may be deposited on the said member or grate section 25 to fall within the support to the ash pit below. The grate structurethus far described embodies an end or cap section adapted for use with a stationary grate. In Figs. 5 and 6 means are shown provided in connection with the same form of end or ca-p'section to adapt the latter for a grate construction of the rocker orshaker type, and the addition necessary is in the form of an arm 30 extending from the center of each flange 22 and having an outwardly projecting trunnion stud 31, which is located at such distance below each angular lip 23 as to not in the least interfere with the latter in its association ordissociation with relation to the end webs or walls 8 of the support. The end or cap section shown by F 5and 8 is in all respects similar in general construction to that heretofore described with the exception that *the outwardly inclined flange 20 is replaced by a vertical flange 32, a trunnion 33 projecting outwardly from. the center of the outer terminalend of thesection 18 for engagement with a suitable apertured or recessed means located atopposite ends of the grate'enclosure, or adjacentthe end walls of the latter, as will be readily understood. By the addition of the arm 30 and the stud 31 and trunnion 33, it vill be seen that the improved end or cap section in its general OIgfilllZillllOD, or including all of the essential features common to both forms, may practically serve in connection with a stationary grate unit or a rockeror shaker unit.
The assemblage of the improved end or cap sections 18as hereinbefore described and the webs or walls of the support 5 is a very simple operation, it only being necessary to dispose each end or cap section at an angle as shown by Fig. 2, -to permit the depending hook member 23 to pass through the slot 17,
and then gradually raise or bring the upper or top portion of theend or cap section into horizontal position and push inwardly on the same to cause complete engagement of the angular lip member with the slot and the insertion of the extensions or arms 15 through the slots 28. After the end or cap sections have thus been applied, the extensions or arms 15 may be connected by a cross pin or bolt 29, as hereinbefore described, or in some instances this cross pin or bolt may be omitted. Should the grate end orcap sections break, the angular lips 23 will serve to hold up the said sections and prevent the same from falling into the ash pit, in view of the fact that the horizontal part 23 of each angular lip would then contact with the top walls of the slots 17 and suspend the support until repair could be made. Furthermore, in the event of fracture or breakage of the angular-lips or hooks 23 and a consequent failure of the said lip or hook to hold up the support, the latter would then be held normally in place by the extensions or arms 15 until suitable repairs could be made. It will also be seen from the foregoing that the flange 22 of each end or cap section serves as a hanger with a lower hook means of such shape as not only to insure a positive association of the end or cap sections with the end of the support, but also to hold up the support in the event of breakage, and the extensions or arms 15 contribute to the upholding of the support by engaging the slots 28 in the flange of the hanger.
The improved end or cap section as heretofore described also efliciently operates as an enclosure for the endof the support to which it is applied and protects the said support end against any intense heat and preserves and renders it more durable. Furthermore,
" it is intended to standardize the dimensions of the end or cap sections and have the inwardly projecting grate member or section 25 vary in length to compensate for differences in the lengths of supports and fully cover the opposite extremities of the support and permit a maintenance of uniformity of length of the intermediate sections comprising the center and outer sections 11 and 12,
fully explained in my copending application hereinbefore specified. The improved end or cap sections are also interchangeable and one of the same standardized dimensions may be readily substituted for another of similar dimensions, it being proposed to carry standardized end or cap sections embodying the features of the present invention in stock and readily obtainable for replacement or substitute purposes.
The essential features of the present invention also contemplate the provision of a support for a grate unit having an integral construction and comprising end walls with slots in the lower portions thereof together with outwardly projecting bearing extensions orshort arms 15 adapted to have associated therewith an end or cap section with relative structural features, to permit enclosing engagement thereof with the end of the support, and further, to provide an end or cap section having structural features which will permit ready assemblage and detachment thereof relatively to a support embodied in a grate unit, and to effect an obstruction to the falling or breaking down of any part of the end or cap section and also the support into the ash pit below, there being a cooperative operation of the separably joined parts of the support and end or cap angular lip 23 formed as a part of the end section, or provided at the lower terminal of the vertically depending flange 22 of said section and movable into and becoming interlocked with the opening 17 in the end bridge strip 8, the depending terminal 24 of the lip 23 being located inside of the said bridge strip when the end section is applied. In application Serial No; 93,691 the bridge strip carries the angular lip and the latter passes through a slot formed in the flange of the end section.
lVhat is claimed as new is:
1. A grate unit comprising a support with end walls integrally formed therewith and having slots extending through the lower portions thereof abpve the lower terminals of the said walls, grate sections mounted on the support, and end cap sections fitting over and enclosing the ends of the support, the ends of the support having upper outwardly projecting arms at opposite sides above the slot of each wall and each enclosing end cap section having an intermediate depending flange terminating at its lower end in a right angle projecting lip with a depending terminal of hook form to pass through the slot of the adjacent wall, of the support and bear against the lower portion of said wall below the slot therein, the upper portion of the flange of the cap section being provided with slots on opposite sides of the center to receive the projections of the support.
2. A grate unit comprising a support with side members connected at each'end by a fiat wall extending fully to the lower edges of the side members and having a single opening therethrough at its lower portion and said wall also provided at the upper portion with a pair of outwardly projecting parallel arms, and an end cap section applied against and partially enclosing the adjacent end of the support and having an intermediate depending flange with a lower right project the upper arms of the support, whereby the support is sustained in its normal outward position through the cap sections and the latter connected to opposite ends of the support.
A grate unit comprising a support with parallel side members having closing end walls provided with openings, one in each near the lower edge of said walls and also having arms projecting outwardly in parallel relation and coincident with the side members of the support, and end cap sections partially extending over and enclosing the opposite ends of the support and each provided with an intermediate depending flange having the lower end directed inward- 1y at a right-angle and terminating in a downward projection to. enter the opening-in the adjacent wall of the support so that the downwardly projecting terminal of the lange will bear against the inner lower side portion of the said wall, the flange of the end cap also having upper openings in each side of thecenter through which pass the arms of the support, the flange of the cap section also having means below the angular inwardly projecting portion of the flange for the applicationof means for shaking the grate unit, the latter being provided between the end sections with removable grate sectlons on the top portion thereof.
