WILLIAM J. nnssgor FORT WAYNE, INDIANA, Ass enoR TOVAN A NAM MAN 7 TURING:CO1VIPANY,A CORPORATIONOF INDIANA.
UFAC- HINGE: non WATER-CLOSET snarsann oovnns.
Application filed November 13, 1926. Serial No. 148,178.
This invention relates to improvements in hinges for water closet seats and covers, and the objects thereof are to provide hinge support on a water closet bowl for the seat and cover therefor, which support presents only a small exposure to view, and'to construct said support so as to be applied to a bowl having standards spaced post holes for the hinge support of a seat and cover,
the rear ends of which are wider than the space between the post holes. An especial object of the invention is to provide a neat hinge support for the seat and cover without encumberance thereto and which will be substantial and durable. Another object is to so construct the hinged support thatit may be easily applied and fixedly secured without marring the seat and cover.
These objects are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a toilet seat and cover therefor with the hinge support applied thereto; v
Fig. 2 is a planv view projected from Fig. 1, partially broken away; a
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the supporting posts applicable to the bowl; v
Fig. 4 is a perspective vlew of one of the hinge members applicable. to the seat; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the posts applicableto of the cover.
The characters appearing in the description refer to parts shown in the drawings and designated thereon by corresponding character The invention consists of a'seat and cover seat has an exposed portion 3 at each side thereof beyondthe corresponding sides of the cover. A a i The hinge support consists ofa pair of posts 5, each having at its upper end a head 6. with a horizontally disposed opening therein, the postsbeing applicable to the bowl, in the spaced post holes therein, in, the customary manner, there being' pro vided' the'seat for the support washers 8 and a nut 9 for securing each post in place. A pair of hinge members 10 are secured to the extended portion 3 of the seat upon the under side thereof, each hinge member having a laterally disposed trunnion 11 that projects into the opening 7 in the headof the corresponding post so as to have pivotal action therein. Each hinge member has also an integral wing 12 provided with a screw opening 13 therein and an upwardly projecting stud 14.v The wings 12 of said hinge members are so formedthat when said members are operably connected with said posts, the wings spread outwardly from each other to such an extent that their screw openings 13 are disposed respectively at points beyond the corresponding sides of the extension 4 of the cover 2. Upon each of the exposed portions 3. of the extension of the seat'is positioned a post 15 having a horizontally disposed opening 16 therein,
said post being secured in, position on said wing 12 of the corresponding'hinge member through the screw opening 13 therein, and
projects upwardly through the extension 3 in the seat and has threaded engagement with the corresponding post 15. The stud, 14 on the Wing of the hinge member pro j ects into the seat and serves to prevent the hinge member from having turning movement relative to the seat. A-pintle 18 is positioned in each side of the cover in the ex-,
tension thereof, with its outer end projecting into the opening 16 in the corresponding post 15, so that the cover has hinge movement between the post 15 on the seat while theseat, has hinge movement relative to the main supporting posts 5.
By thus'constructing theinvention each" hinge member and correspondingpost 15 for i the cover-are both substantially secured to E on the seat by a single screw. By forming thewings of the hinge members so as to spread outwardly from each other, and spacing the posts 15 correspondingly, the-width of the extension 4 on the cover is not reduced to such an extent as to impair its strength or the beauty of its design.
What I claim is 1. Incombination with a water closet seat and cover therefor, a pair of hinge posts; a
pair of wings hinged respectively in connection with said posts and extending beneath said seat; superimposed posts on said seat piyotally supporting said cover; and a screw connecting ea'chj'ofsaid wings and the corresponding superimposed post through said" seat, there belng a stud on each wing projec'ting into said seat to prevent displacement of said wing.
2. In combination with a water closet seat andcover therefor; a main supporting hinge member comprising a post and wing pivoted thereon, said wing being secured to said seat; a superimposed post on said seat pivotaiiy connected with said cover; and a screw extending through said seatconnecting said wing and superimposed post.
. In combination with a water cioset seat and oover'thorefor, a hinge supporting said seat attached therebeneath;. and another hinge superimposed upon the seat supporting SL1CiGOV6I','S2L1d hinges being connected together through said seat.
4. A water closet seat and cover therefor,
each having a rearwardly extending portion,
the extending portion of said seat having an i,
derr beneath the-posts thereon; and means extending through said seatconnecting said hinges and corresponding posts. I
In testimonyvwhereof I aflix my slgnature,
