K. I. BELDEN TOY Original Filed April 5, 1923 Fig.4...
// I 2217522 :72: 1 v fifi imga Patented July to, was.
UNITED STATES KATHRYN'E IVY BELDEN, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
PATENT FFiCR-u TOY.
Application filed April 5, 1923, Serial My invention relates to toys of a type and kind to be played with by children, especially on the shores of a bodyof water, though it is capable ofv use at any other place and at other time.
One object of my invention is to construct a toy havinga figure mounted on-a base,
the base to be buoyant, and'tov be provided with a counter-weight to maintain the figure in a substantially vertical position.
Another object of my invention is to ar- I range and mount the counter-weight so that when the toy is used on land, the counterweight may enter a recess or counter-bore in the base, and may if desired, be held therein by a suitable latch.
Other objects of my invention will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specificallypointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a toy embodying my invention. V
Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the base of the toy and its associated parts,
Inpraoticing my invention, and as shown in the drawing, I employ a base 1 of a size and material suitable to support and of a buoyancy sufficient to float the figure 2, the latter being preferably formed around a wire skeleton which terminates into lower portions 3, each of which may be bent as at- 4, to simulate a foot, afterwhich the .wires pass through the base and are bent as shown to maintain them against accidental'removal.
A "red or wire 0 passes through the base at approximately its center, has its'upper end bent as shown at 6, its lower end carrying a lead or other suitable counter-weight i 7.jthe rod fi being passed through a hole in and a second counter-bore 9 is formed in the base, the latter being preferably of. less depth than the counter-bore 8, and a latch 10, is mounted in this counter-bore as by a brad 11, the latch being of suflioient size to overlap a portion of the counter-weight and hold it in position when in thecounter-bore 8, as shown in Fig. 2.
No. 630,065. Renewed-April 2a, 192s.
If it is desired to use the toy in the water, the latch is turnedto the position as shown in Fig, 1, whereupon the toy may be tossed, or placed on. the water and it will float with the figure in an upright position, the movement of the surface of the water causing the toy toos cillate, thus enhancing its value as a toy and ifthere is a breeze blowing,
the toy will move along thru the water.
If desired a thread or line may beattached to the base or any other part of the toy dwhereby it may be recovered when de- .s1re
Where used on land, the counter weightmay be moved upwardly into the counterbore and latched therein, whereupon the toy may be pulled about, the base being large enough to maintainthe figure upright under most conditions. It is to be noted by reference to Fig. 2 that when the counter-weight is latched in itscounter-bore the base projects below the latch'and other parts to the end that if the toy is placed upon a table or.
other finished surface, none of its parts-will project downwardly to injurethe surface of the table. U I
It is to be noted that I prefer to make the base of wood, and it is also to be noted that it is preferable to water proof both the base and the figure to prolong the life of the toy. Having thus fully described my invention, I claim: 1. In a toy the combination of a figure, a buoyant base forthe figure and having a boreextending upwardly therethr ough, a
rod mounted for vertical movement in said bore, a counter-weight carried by the lower end of said rod, means for limiting the downward movement of said r od,.and a counterbore in the under surface ofsaid base wherein the counterweight is adapted to enter. 2. In a toy the combination of a figure,"
a buoyant base for the figure and having a bore' extending upwardly therethrough, a rod mounted for vertical movement in said bore, acounter-weight carried by the lower end ofsaid rod, means for limiting the downward movementv of said rod, a counter bore the under surface of said base wherein the counter-weight is adapted to enter, and releasable means to hold; the
counter-weight in'the counter bore.
