Description
. J. M. KNIGHT 7 DOOR FASTENER Original Filed Nov. 8, 1921 Patented July 1Q, 1928.
I was JAMES M. KNIGHT, OF SAN ANTONIO, rEXAs;
noon FASTENER. V
Application filed November 8, 1921, Serial No. 513,756. Renewed February 31, 192 8.
: This invention relates to door securing devices, and more particularly to door securing devices of the portable type, the primary object of the invention being to pro-' vide a securing-device which may be readily and easily applied to the usual door construction, novel means being provided to contactwith the door to retain the door in a closed position. v 7
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a body portion and a movable door engaging section, pivoted means being provided forsecuring the door engaging section in various r positions of adjustment, to adapt the same for use with doors of various thicknesses.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which willv appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com- 2 bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being vunderstood that .changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, maybe made 7 within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention. Referring to the drawing v V Figure 1 is a fragmental sectional view of a door and its jamb, disclosing the secur-v on line to engage within the usual keeper or latch opening of a door jamb, the extension 7 lying'in close engagement with one surface of the jamb. v
Formed within the body portion 5.and disposed in spaced relation with each other, are the openings 8 formed to receive the pin 9 forming a part of the pivoted latch member 10. This latch member 10 is carried by the movable section 11 which is formed of suitable metal and has inwardly extending portions 12 embracing portions of the body portion 5 asclearly shown by Figure 3 of the drawing, the structure being such as to permit the section 11 to slide freely over the body portion 5.
to normally urge one end of the latch mem her away from the movable section 11.
Formed integral withlthe member 11, is
In orderthat the latch member may a flange 16, which is relatively wide and adapted to engage the door associated with the fastening device, the door being indi-.
cated by the reference character 17, ,to'illustrate the application of the device. Thus it will be seen that the flange 16 provides an abutment, and when the device is positioned ona door jamb, the flange prevents movement of the door to open the, same.
It might be further stated thatv the construction of thefastening device is such that the same may be carried in the satchel,
whereby persons traveling may be protected agalnst unauthorized persons entering their rooms.
This latch member is also formed with a thumb engaging portion 18 to facilitate the operation of the device.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new 1s:
A door securing device including a body. portion formed of'a'length of sheet metal, said body portion having an oflset portion eav adjacent to one endthereof andhaving a.
flange at its end adjacent to the offset-portion, said ofl'set portion adapted to be'posithereof and disposed at right angles with respect to the body portion and adapted to engage a door, ears stamped from the movable section, said movable section having an opening, a latch member pivotally supported between the ears and having a pin adapted to extend through the opening of the movnature.
able member and into an opening of the body portion to lock the movable member against movement.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afliXed my sig- JAMES M; KNIGHT.
