Description

B. SINGER. LOCK FOR moons, wmoows, AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 23, 1920.
Patented Dec. 13, 1921.
[am/ for v UNITED STATES To all whom it mwy concern:
Be it known that'I, BENJAMIN SINGER, a subject of Russia, residing at the' city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvement in Locks for Doors, Windows, and the like, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in locks for doors, windows, and the like.
The chief object of my present invention is to provide a lock comprising a pair of companion members which will efficiently cooperate when upon a door and its jamb to securely hold or look the door from being sprung or forced open and when upon a window to provide a barrier for preventing the usual pivoted window-lock from being forced from the outside. f I
Another object ofmy present invention is to provide a lock of the-type stated which may be readily and economically manufactured, and which may be conveniently fixed upon the window or door. 7
' With the above and further objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts I hereinafter de-. scribed and afterwardpointed out in the claims.
' In theaccompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is an elevational view of one of the members of the door-lock;
Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly brokenaway and in section, of the companion member of the door-lock;
Fig. 3 is a fragmental elevational view of a door and its-jamb equipped with a lock enibodying my invention;
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the parts seen in Fig. 3; I, I
Fig. 5 is a perspective v1ew of one of the members of the window-lock;
Fig. 6 is a similar view of the companion member of the window-lock; and I y.
' Fig. 7 is a fragmentaltransverse sectlonal view of a pair of'window-sashes equipped with a window-lock embodying my invention. L
Referring more in detail to the said drawing, in whichli'ke reference-characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, and having reference especially to Figs. 1, 2,
PATENT OFFICE.-
LOCK r03 noons, wn'vnows, AND 'IH-E LIKE.
, Specification of Letters Patent. Patented' De 13 1 92 Application filed June 28,
1920. Serial 1%. 392,249.
3,-and 4 of the drawing, the door-lock-prope'r includes a pair of companion-or cooperating members A and B.
The member A, which I maydescriptively termthe male member of the lock,comprises' a body-portion in the formof a suitably elongated plate 1 depressed inwardly or rearwardly within its length to provide a socalled cavity or chamber, asat 2'. Integral with a side edge of plate 1 at its depression or cavity 2, as best seen in Fig. 1, is'atong'ue or extension 3, which is bent over to'provide or form a hook lying within the cavity or de pression 2, the outer face ofhook 3 being preferably flush with the outer face of the portion of plate 1 to each. side of the cavity 2, and the hook being spaced at its inner face from theouter face of the cavity-forming portion ofthe plate. Both the hook 3' and the portion 2 of plate -1 are suitably cut away transversely to provide registering apertures 44, for'purposes shortly appearing; Integral with theopposite-sideedge of, and disposed at right angles to, plate 1, asalso best seen in Fig. 1,-is a rearwardly presented strengthening flange 5". The companion or female member B of the lock similarly comprises a 'body-portion inf the formof a suitably elongated plate 6 cor-" respondingly depressed outwardly or forwardly within its length, as at 7 for cooper-- ation with the cavity 2 and hook 3 of memher A, the depressed portion 7 of plate 6 being likewise cut away. to provide apertures 8 adapted for registration with the apertures 4 of plate land hook-3.
' Plate 6 is similarly provided at one side i edge with a rearwardly presented right-angular strengthening flange 9.
' In use or operation, the member A is -pref-,.
erably. fixed to and upon the amb J, as best seen in. Figs. 3 and 4, asby means of suitable fastening screws projected into the jam'b through suitable openings 10-10 provided for the purpose in plate 1-' and its flange 5. I
The jamb is preferably cut-away or'recess'ed to provide apocket in which the member A is seated with the outer} face of its flange 5 substantially flush withjlthe'outer side face, of the jamb and with the outer face, of plate 1 somewhat below the plane of the-outer end face of the jamb. The member B is similarly fixed in cooperative position upon the door D, as also seenjinxFigs'. 3 and 4, and when so fixed upon the door the depressedportion 7 of the plate 6 forms or provides with the end face of the door a pocket for receiving and accommodating the hook 3 of companion member A. The members A and B being so fixed in operative position upon the door and jamb, it will be seen that the depressed portion 7 ofplate 6 is accommodated and received by the cavity 2 of plate A with hook 3 fitting in'the pocket formed as described by the plate 6 and the door D. With the "members A and B so engaging, it will be evident that the two'plates or members of the lock efficiently cooperate or coact'to securely hold the door from being sprung or forced open by a jimmy or other such tool. Although it will be evident that the'lock-members A and B may be fitted at any desired or convenient cooperating location upon the door and jamb, the said members are preferably located upon the door and jamb to cooperate with the usual door lock and latch, in which event, as here shown, the registering apertures 4 and 8 of the members A and B readily permit the operation of theusual door-latch 11 and the projection of the usual locking bolt 12 into and from door-locking position.
Referring now more especially to Figs; 5, 6 and 7 wherein the modified form of the lock shown is designed more particularly for use inconnection with window sashes, the lock similarly comprises a pair of cooperating or companion members, the member A being the male member and the member B being the female member of the lock.
Member A likewise comprises a body-portion in the form ofan elongated plate 13 formed integrally at one side edge with an extension or hook-portion 14, which is disposed at right angles, and somewhat reduced in length relatively, to the plate 13.
The member B also comprises a body-portion in the form of an elongated pocket-pro-.
vi'ding plate 15, which is provided preferably integrally atone side edge with an extension 16, which is first bent downwardly to extend at right angles to the plate 15 and isthen'bent or folded upwardly upon itself,
as at 17 the portion 17 being closely clenched in contact with the portion '16 at the ends thereof and being centrally spaced from the portion 16 to provide a pocket 18 of dimensions adapted to receive and, accommodate the extension or hook 14'of member A.
In use or operation, the member A is fitted and fixed, as by securing screws 1919 projectedthrough plate -13a'nd its hook-flange 14, upon the upper bar 20 of the lower windowsash. The member-B, as best seen in Fig. 6, is fitted andfixed, as by securing screws 21, in cooperating position relatively to the member A upon the upperface of thelower bar 22 of the upper sash of the window, the bar 22 being preferably 'cut away or recessed to neatly accommodate the member B, as
seen in Fig. 7. With the members A and B so fitted and fixed in cooperating position upon the window sashes, it will be seen that, when the window-sashes are in closed position, the hook or flange-portion 14 of member A will fit within the pocket 18 of member B. For accommodating the securing screw 19 projected through the flange 14 of member A, the portion 17 of member B is cut awa as at 23. ounted upon the members A and B are the usual cooperating members E and F of a standard window lock, as seen in Fig. 7 and it will now be evident that, when the sashes are in closed position, the cooperating members A and B of the lock provide or form a barrier to the locking members E and F, preventing access to such locking members for forcing or springing the same from the outside of the window. When the lockmember E is in open position, the window sashes may be raised and lowered in the usual manner. V I,
I am aware that changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my lock may bemade and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and'principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A look of the kind described comprising a first plate adapted for location upon an end face of a door, the plate being depressed within its length to form with the door a pocket, in combination with a second plate adaptedfor location upon an end face of the door-jamb, the second plate being also depressed within its length to provide a cav-' ity for cooperation with the depressed portion of the first plate, and a hook integral with one sideedge of the second plate and adapted to fit within said pocket when the door is closed,'the hook lying within the depression of the second plate and itsouter face being flush with'the outer face of the second plate to each side of said depression.
2. A lock of the kind described comprising a first plate adapted for location upon an end face of a door, the plate being depressed within its length to form with the door a pocket, in combination with a second plate adapted for location upon an end face of the door-jamb, the second plate being also depressed within its length to provide a cavity for cooperation with the depressed portion of the first plate, and a hook integral with one side edge of the second plate and adapted to fit within said pocket when the door is closed, the hook lying within the depression of the second plate and its outer face being flush with the outer face of the second plate to eachside .of said depression and the hook and the depressed portion of the first plate being provided with apertures adapted for registration when the door is closed to accommodate the locking bolt of the door.
3. YA lock of the kind described comprising a first plate adapted for location upon an end face of a door, the plate being depressed within its length to form with the door a pocket, in combination with a second plate adapted for location'upon an end face of the door-jamb, the second plate being also depressed within its length to provide a cavity for cooperation with the depressed portion of the first plate, and a hook integral with one side edge of the second plate and adapted to fit within said pocket when the door is closed the hook lying within the depression of the second plate and its outer face "being flush with the outer face of the second plate to each side of said depression, and the hook and the depressed portions of the first and second plates being provided with apertures adapted for registration when the .door is closed to accommodate the locking bolt of the door. I
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification. I 4 I BENJAMIN SINGER.
